Website: shhawks.net District Office Ph: 515-827-5479 Elementary Ph: 515-827-5096 MS/HS Office: Ph: 515-827-5418 I had a student ask me the other day, “Dr. Howard, what does a superin- tendent do?” My reply was, “I believe my job is to help teachers teach, and to help kids learn. There are a lot of things I must do, or should do, to make that happen, but really that is what my job is all about. I became a school district administrator so I could help as many teachers and students succeed in school as possible.” Before he turned and walked away he replied, “That’s really cool, thanks so much for helping me!” When I finished talking to the student and went back to my office I real- ized I had shared my personal WHY. Why I wanted to become a school leader in the first place and the rest of the story, if I had imparted it, would be the how and what I actually do. However, in this case, the answers to those questions did not seem to be all that important, and the student seemed to be satisfied with my answer. My WHY was reaffirmed, at least by this one student and in my mind! This situation reminded me, once again, that if I start with, and stay focused my WHY—to help teachers teach, and to help kids learn—then my how and what will most often be in the best interest of those whom I strive to serve. IT DEPARTMENT NEWSThissummerforITupdates,wearerefreshingtheelementaryChromebooksandChromefliptablets.Wewillbebringinginaround350newdevicesforthisrefresh.WewillbeupgradingthedistrictWiFiagain.ThistimeCiscoMeraki won the bid and we are happy to announce that this will be a major upgrade in WiFi to the district as far as speed and stability. We are installing electronic tobacco and drug detection systems as well this summer. We are testing and planning to expand the use of electronic sensors that specialize in analyzing air quality for vape detection, tobacco, and drug use products in an ongoing effort to make our school a safe and drug free zone. We are also increasing anti-bully measures by installing more cameras in public spaces and sound monitoring systems in non-public spaces. The sound systems do not record conversations but monitor for spikes in voices and stress. Students will be trained that if they yell in a bathroom, it will set an alarm for admin teams to respond to. The alarms will coordinate with camera systems in the halls by the bathrooms to see who came in and out during the alarm timelines, as well.

We will continue to evaluate update and improve our electronic safety measures for video monitoring, computer monitor-ing, and cloud system monitoring at every opportunity as technology improves.
