As usual it was hot in the hall but was worth it to recognise the wonderful performances and achievements that have made South Grafton High School the outstanding educational institution it is today. The teacher comments are a valuable and informative source giving the students a starting point for improvement in 2014. Farewell Brian Heath’s farwell was held during the week with over 100 people in attendance. As a Principal, Brian has been very influential in the development of South Grafton High School over the past seven years. There were several speeches recalling Brian’s achievements over the years and the legacy he has left behind. The Principal’s position will be advertised early term one 2014 and hopefully filled by midterm. University Visits The Queensland Universities trip last week was very successful. Students who attended gained valuable knowledge of the different tertiary institutions for future study. They were most impressed with the new Southern Cross University Campus at the Gold Coast which has state of the art facilities. This provides a great opportunity for our students to have this facility two and a half hours away. A large number of students have gained early entry into their chosen University via the school’s recommendations and the various programs that the Universities run. Congratulations to Wade Hughes who received this year’s DUX award for Djehuti Smart on Presentation Night. Wade entered the program at the beginning of the year, strived hard and achieved the targets on all 12 packs. It takes practice and brain training to quickly answer 20% of $85.00. What is the answer? ($17.00- 10% is 8.5, double that for 20%). He has been exemplary in all four PBL areas; Show Respect, Personal Best, Take Responsibility and Stay Safe. Djehuti Smart is scaling down for 2014 and has moved to F2. There will be a reduced number of students in the withdrawal program but we will try to help students in more Mathematics classes to become "quick" and "smart" with flashcards and speedsheets. If you think your child could benefit from this wonderful program please feel free to register interest early in the 2014 school year on 0447421460 or through the front office. Lastly I sincerely thank the SLSO's (teacher’s aides) who have tirelessly motivated and encouraged the students to achieve and develop confidence through this simple yet inspiring program. Thank you to Deb W, Rob, Les, Waylen and Deb M. Tania O'Connor (Djehuti Smart Coordinator)

Naplan Rewards Activity 2013

NAPLAN rewards activity was held last Tuesday morning and it was attended by

Year 7 and Year 9 students who were our High Achievers or Most Improved in this

year’s NAPLAN tests. The students were presented with Certificates by Ms Foley and we then went to the Saraton Theatre

to attend a special pre-release viewing of the movie “Free Birds”.

Students’ comments included “The NAPLAN Rewards Day was a great idea. It

was fun that we went to the movies with friends who had also performed well in

NAPLAN. It was great to be rewarded.” (Charlotte Sommer and Emily O’Neill Yr 7) “It was rewarding to be invited and it

encourages the younger students to do well and get invited to it. Loved it lots!”

(Orion Bailey and Bima Dekker Yr 9)

SRC

Presentation Night – We are so proud of

all the SRC members who were honoured with academic awards on Tuesday night,

especially Max Rose of Year 9 and Amie O’Dell of Year 10 who were top of their

years. Congratulations also to Keanu Looker, Mason Graham, Cormac Grant and Mark Hough who performed an

original song with a powerful anti-bullying

message. Ella and Kye did a great job of compering the evening.

Christmas – The SRC wishes all our

students and families season’s greetings

and hopes for a restful and safe holiday. We look forward to another busy year in 2014.

RYTS – The seniors who attended the six

day Rotary camp reported “it was the best week of their life” (Kye Pracy) and the experience was “life changing” (Kiah

Bennett). Our thanks to Grafton and Midday Rotary for their continued support

for youth leadership projects.

Dunbè goes to Schools Spectacular

Practicing in the car park

On 29 November 2013, Dunbè travelled to Sydney to perform at Schools Spectacular.

The train ride took 11 hours and all students had to arrive at the train station

at 5.00 am. We arrived in Sydney around 4.00 pm at Central Station. We then made our way to

Arrons Hotel where we stayed for the next couple of days. As we arrived at the hotel,

the staff greeted us and showed us our allocated rooms. After we made ourselves at home we

walked down to Market City to have a look at the markets and have dinner. The next

day we went to Paddy’s Markets and walked around and had a look for a while. After that we all got ready to go to the

Entertainment Centre to get ready for our big performance. “It was spectacular”.

When we had finished we walked into the Entertainment Centre and watched the other acts, “it was phenomenal!!!”

The next day we packed up our things and headed home on the train for another 11

hours. “It was an unforgettable experience….” By Natasha Rudder, Courtney McKew and

Cassandra Ward, Year 8.

Yea 8 Swim Day

Last Friday about 40 students participated in a swim and survive program. The day

was extremely successful - all the students were grouped according to their

swimming ability, then completed one of the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia levels. To finish the day the students had

fun in the dive pool and water slide. A big thank you to the teachers and Year 10

helpers that organised the day.

Presentation Night Performances

The Aboriginal Dance Ensemble performed a dance item called "Gathu Mawula" , and

the Jazz group performed a dance medley to Greases "You’re the One that I Want",

Footloose and Think.
