Dear Member,

Halfway through the major shows now, and the National Show is only a few

days away. I am including inside more information about what is happening

during the Show, and we hope to see many of you there to support what will

undoubtedly be a tremendous spectacle of South Devons!

I am delighted to be able to announce - after a lengthy period of meetings,

discussions, and trials - that Waitrose will be launching a new regional beef

scheme in the South West of England this Autumn, in which South Devon beef

will play a starring role!

The initial pilot scheme will run in Waitrose‟s five stores in Devon and Cornwall

and will supply South Devon and Devon beef from approved herds, born,

reared and slaughtered in the South West region (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset,

Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire). The beef will be slaughtered at

Jaspers in Treburley, Cornwall, and processed by Dovecote Park in Pontefract.

2

Only cattle sired by pedigree registered bulls will be eligible, and those bulls

will be required to be DNA tested for sire verification (some older stock bulls

have not been tested yet). Carcase weight needs to be between 260 and 400

kg, with a minimum 0+ conformation and an ideal of 3+/-4 finish.

From now, Dovecote Park will be working to secure supplies of stores and

finished steers and heifers, and to begin their audit procedure of each

supplier. If you would like to apply to become a member of the Scheme please

contact Rob Bunn or Kate Sutton at Dovecote Park Ltd, Stapleton, Pontefract,

West Yorkshire, WF8 3DD, tel 01977 623331, or ask Caroline for an

application form.

This is a tremendous opportunity for breed publicity, which should also lead in

the longer term to increased demand for South Devon bulls, and South Devon

semen. We will plan an official launch in early Autumn.

You will probably have read in the Press recently that Morrisons are also

focussing on Native Breeds and have launched their „Morrisons Traditional

Beef Scheme‟, with an appetite for new supplies, for which they are also

willing to pay a premium. Already well-established as suppliers of 100%

British beef, this is another big step forward. If interested, please ask

Caroline for an application form, or contact Woodhead Bros (Colne) Ltd,

Whitewalls Industrial Estate, Colne, Lancs, BB8 8LH, tel 01282 729117.

More Show results are inside, together with Sale reports – and plenty of

other information which I hope will be of interest.

One final thing to draw your attention to: The National Herd Competition will

this year be held one week earlier, during the first half of September. An

entry form will be included in the next newsletter.

With my best wishes

Caroline

NOTICE TO ALL PERFORMANCE RECORDING MEMBERS

The next Group (ie national) BLUP Evaluation will be published in early August,

from data recorded with us up to and including Friday 15th July.

Enclosed are weigh sheets for 2010 and 2011 animals for recording herds.

Please use these to record weights and return to Liz by 15th July. We cannot

guarantee that information received after that date will be included.

Also enclosed are weigh sheets for cows. These are used to calculate the

Mature Cow Weight EBV which is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow

weight at 5 years of age, and are based on cow weights taken at the same time

as the 200 day weights are recorded for their calves. Even if you are not able

to weigh the cows at this time, perhaps you would spend a few minutes going

through the list and updating it, before returning it to the office.

If you do not receive weigh sheets with this newsletter please let us know. It

may just be that we are waiting for more birth notifications/pedigree

registrations from you, and it would be a good opportunity to update the

records.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR REGISTRATIONS

It is vital that your pedigree paperwork is up to date in good time before a TB

test so that you have the best value protection for your animals.

Please help us to help you by sending in notifications/registrations/transfers

well before you need the certificates. We will always do our utmost to carry

out urgent work at very short notice, but it is not always possible.

If the work is urgent, please be sure to let us know (bearing in mind that the

office is closed at weekends).

13

TO MEMBERS OF CHeCS

If you wish to claim your entitlement to two years‟ discounting of your

pedigree registrations by £5 plus VAT per registration as a member of a

CHeCS health scheme and you are screening for Johnes, please let Debbie

know.

Membership websites are not as accessible as they were, and it is not now

possible for us to access membership information without your permission.

It is in your financial interests to tell us!

DURING THE SHOW

If you are planning to visit and could perhaps bring a cake, then we‟d love to

see you (and the results of your cooking!)

Likewise, if you would like to lend a hand in the marquee for an hour or so,

please see Liz.

A „Best Dressed‟ Competition will run during the whole of Wednesday and

Thursday morning, with a section each for Ladies and for Gentlemen, so bring

out your Sunday best!

MONDAY 27TH & TUESDAY 28TH JUNE

For exhibitors arriving at the Show, please be warned that the last mile or so

to get into the showground is along quite narrow roads. Clive Salmon

(Malthouse Livestock herd) is arranging a few helpers to assist with

offloading lorries. Clive will also have a supply of showground maps to help any

new visitors find their way around. If you would like his mobile number please

ask us here in the office.

WEDNESDAY 29TH JUNE

Judging will begin at 09.00, and will continue until lunchtime.

The David Phillips Memorial Competition may be entered by younger members

– please ask for more details if you have missed information in previous

newsletters.

Hopefully we will finish the judging before the first interbreed championship

– the Colman Mustard Interbreed Beef Championship. Entries will be

coordinated by the judge and the Society, and each entry will consist of 2

cows or heifers from the breed classes, 1 commercial steer or heifer, and 1

registered bull of the breed, OR 1 cow or heifer from the breed classes, 2

commercial steers or heifers, and 1 registered bull of the breed. Heifers and

steers to be under 2 years of age, and the cows and bull may be any age.

Breeds may enter more than one group.

15

The Grand Parade is scheduled to start at 16.20 and finish at 17.05.

Exhibitors are encouraged to „borrow‟ as many helpers as they can to display

the maximum number of cattle, and to produce a tremendous South Devon

spectacle in the Main Ring.

The Society‟s Pimms Party in our marquee will start at 17.15. This is being

coordinated by Jane Hood and a team of helpers, to whom we are very

grateful. It will be followed by the Stockmen‟s Supper at 19.00 for those

exhibitors and guests who have booked tickets.

THURSDAY 30TH JUNE

Interbreed judging starts at 08.00, and will be followed by the Towergate

Lloyd & Whyte Young Handler Competition at about midday. Entrants for the

Competition are asked to come to the Society‟s marquee at midday with a

white coat, bucket, and brushes, when they will be given more instructions and

will be allocated a heifer to use in the Competition. If you have not already entered the Competition, please use the form at the back of this newsletter to complete and return to Caroline.

After the Young Handler Competition, at about 13.00, awards will be made in

the marquee to the winners of the Competition; to the recipient of the Track

Marshall Trophy for most points in the previous day‟s classes; and to the Best

Dressed winners.

The Grand Parade is scheduled to begin at 15.15 pm. Again, it would be great

to get the maximum number of animals under the public eye.

After that, it‟s „free time‟ to enjoy the rest of the Show! And to start

planning for the Three Counties Show next year …

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

SOUTH DEVON CATTLE BREEDERS CLUB OUTING

Tuesday 12th July

By kind invitation of Andrew Allan, Portman Burtley Estate, Beaconsfield,

Bucks

Arrangements are being made to provide transport from Cornwall and Devon.

If you would like to come, please contact Mrs Margaret Northey, 01548

REGION 6 OPEN DAY

Saturday 23rd July

At the invitation of Sean & Kay Carpenter, Lickhill herd, 1 Lickhill Road North, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, DY13 8RW

Woodgreen is a family run, working farm. Grazing the farm‟s 160 acres are

three herds: the Woodgreen herd, the Severn Valley herd (established in

This is a new event aimed at younger members, and relatives/friends of

more like-minded South Devon enthusiasts. Age range 16 to 30. If you would

like to come along, or know someone who might be persuaded to join in, please

let us know in good time. The cost will be approximately £70 for the weekend,

to include accommodation and meals, and all the fun!

SOCIETY SUPPORT FOR PRIMESTOCK SHOW

Alongside the Society‟s financial support of exhibitors taking South Devon

cattle to one specific Summer show (this year Royal Welsh), there will also be

support for members exhibiting at one specific Primestock show.

This year, the Breed Promotion Committee have decided to support the

English Winter Fair which will be held in the Bingley Hall, Staffordshire

County Showground on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th November.

There will be a discount of £65 per exhibitor who is a member of the Society

bringing cattle forward to this show this year.

DNA TESTING

The Society has been running a discount scheme for DNA testing females for

myostatin for a period of time, with a limit of ten females per member

initially.

There is still some availability left on the second batch which we are putting

together for the lab, and also the third batch of approximately 370 samples.

The Executive Committee met recently and decided that, bearing in mind the

length of time that the discount has been available to members, the discount

may now be taken up by any member wishing to do so, irrespective of the

initial minimum number of ten females.

This will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis, and if you would

like to take advantage of the half-price of £10 per female plus VAT, let us

know as soon as possible. The standard charge is £20.

BLUETONGUE UPDATE

As of Tuesday 5th July Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) will be be

declared free from BTV8. From this date it will not be legal to use vaccine in

this country, and animals moving out of GB will be free to do so without

vaccination.

There is not perceived to be enough virus circulating in Europe for a

windborne incursion to occur, and the risk from imported livestock is low.

Imports to the UK will still be checked for BTV8 on a risk basis.

CHANGES TO PASSPORTS

On 1st August 2011 the cattle passport will change to a single page, double

sided sheet of paper. The new passport will contain all the same information

as the cheque book style passport and there are no changes to the rules. The

change is being introduced as the electronic services for cattle reporting –

CTS Online, the self-service phone system and web services – prove

increasingly popular, with more than 80% of transactions now being reported

electronically.

Movement cards will no longer be supplied by BCMS, and we are told that

keepers currently reporting movements using paper „will need to find

alternative methods‟.

A number of alternatives for movements are available, including the CTS

Online website and the self-service telephone line. Farm software packages

can also report movements for farmers as they update their records. RPA is

also working with livestock markets and abattoirs to encourage them to offer

a reporting service for their clients.

The cheque book style and old blue/green passports are still valid and can still

be used in the normal ways. There is no need to return old passports to be

issued with the new ones. Passports that are returned for re-issue because

the movement history is full or for amendment will be re-issued as a new style

passport.

2011 EBLEX BETTER RETURN PROGRAMME

IMPROVED HERD AWARDS

EBLEX makes an annual award to breeds using Breedplan performance

recording, for herds with data showing the greatest genetic improvement over

the past 12 months.

I am very pleased to announce this year‟s winners, as follows:

1st N & M Holt-Martyn, Tavistock, Devon The CROWNDALE herd

2nd A & P Rickett, Daventry, Northants The JUNIPER herd

3rd A R Lee, Alnwick, Northumberland The LUMBYLAW herd

The awards are made by EBLEX to help increase awareness of the value of

purchasing performance recorded animals to both pedigree and commercial

buyers – a value which we are now seeing at our own breed sales as more

purchasers ask for „figures‟.

Congratulations to Nick & Mel Holt-Martyn, and to the other winners.

PROMOTIONAL HELP, PLEASE!

May I make a plea to any members to put pen to paper (or fingers to

keyboard), to let me have TESTIMONIALS about their cattle, and their beef

– especially good ones!

We are putting together a new information leaflet about the qualities of the

South Devon breed and its beef, and quotes are always eye-catching.

Perhaps you have customers who are especially pleased by „the eating

experience‟; or are supplying a particular restaurant or celebrity chef who

would be happy to quote their opinions.

Once we are working with Dovecote Park we shall have more up-to-date

technical information about the beef which will also be used in publicity.

22

TABLE-MATS

We are considering adding a new production of table-mats to our Merchandise

List. The last time we did this was for the World Congress in 2005, so I

expect those still being used from then are beginning to show signs of wear!

This time we are looking at a more durable quality which is also heat-resistant

– and therefore more expensive!

Although the prices are not yet firm, they should retail to members at

approximately £30 per box of six place-mats, and approximately £14 per box

of two centre mats. Each mat will have a different South Devon picture

printed on it.

As the costs are higher, it would be appreciated if we could have an indication

of interest before we place an order with the manufacturer, so please let us

know (without obligation) if you are interested.

A MESSAGE FROM DANIELLE CAMP Horsehill Farm, Ashburton, Devon

“I would like to thank all those members who responded to my dissertation

questionnaire on the attitudes of beef and lamb producers to farm assurance

schemes. In total I received over 190 responses, an overwhelming response

and far more than I had expected. I greatly appreciated the time spent by

members in completing and returning the questionnaire and also for the

additional comments made by many members. The responses were vital to my

final year university project and I would like to thank all members who

assisted in my research.

Danielle”

AND FINALLY …

A lecturer in a teaching hospital was trying to demonstrate the danger of too

much drink. To prove his point he put a live worm in a glass of water and

another live worm in a glass of whisky. At the end of his lecture he turned to

the two glasses. The worm in the water was wriggling about strongly but the

worm in the whisky was still, and obviously stone dead.

The lecturer turned to his audience of medical students and said, “What is the

lesson to be learned from my demonstration?”

A voice from the back quickly replied, “If you‟ve got worms, drink whisky.”
