SDSU previously had a program-best three wrestlers qualify for the national tournament

in both 2014 and 2015.

NATIONALLY RANKED: The South Dakota State University wrestling team reached a

milestone in its Division I pursuits as the Jackrabbits cracked the USA Today/NWCA Division

I top 25 for the first time on Feb. 9 by vaulting into the 24th spot on the strength of a long

winning streak. SDSU later moved up three spots to 21st in the Feb. 23 poll.

SDSU also is currently tied for 29th in the Tournament Power Index rankings compiled by

WIN Magazine. SDSU was ranked 31st in the preseason TPI and previously climbed to as

high as No. 25 after its Dec. 13 dual win against North Dakota State.

BIG 12 RECAP: Three South Dakota State University wrestlers recorded individual

runner-up finishes and the Jackrabbits placed fourth in the team standings in their first-ever

appearance at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship, which was held March 5-6 at Sprint

Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Redshirt freshman Seth Gross was the first Jackrabbit to wrestle in Sunday’s finals as he

was matched up against top-ranked Dean Heil of Oklahoma State. Heil would go on defeat

Gross, 5-3, but Gross earned a trip to nationals with his runner-up finish.

The 157-pound championship bout featured top-seeded Cody Pack of SDSU against sec-

ond-seeded Joseph Smith of Oklahoma State. Smith scored an early takedown and carried

the momentum through for an 8-4 victory. Pack, who fell to 27-3 overall, will be making

his fourth consecutive trip to the national tournament.

At 197 pounds, Nate Rotert will make a return trip to the national meet despite dropping

a 4-3 decision to fifth-seeded Preston Weigel of Oklahoma State in the championship

match. Rotert’s season record stands at 26-9.

David Kocer became the fourth Jackrabbit to earn a trip to nationals with a fourth-place

finish at 174 pounds. A sophomore from Wagner, Kocer opened the day with a 3-2, over-

time victory over West Virginia’s Ross Renzi in the consolation semifinals. Kocer later with-

drew from the scheduled third-place match against Oklahoma’s Matt Reed for medical

reasons.

Alex Kocer and Luke Zilverberg each split their consolation matches Sunday morning to

finish with fifth-place showings. Alex Kocer dropped a 9-6 decision to Cole Mendenhall of

Wyoming in his first match, but came back to post a 15-7 major decision over Northern

Colorado’s Timmy Box. Kocer improved to 24-10 this season.

Zilverberg opened the Sunday morning session with a 7-2 loss to third-seeded Clark

Glass of Oklahoma in the consolation semifinals, but claimed fifth place with a 4-2 decision

over Michael Billingsley of Air Force to close out his season.

DUAL SEASON RECAP:The Jackrabbits put together their most successful dual season

at the Division I level, compiling a 14-6 overall record and 6-2 mark against Big 12

Conference opponents.

Of the Jackrabbits’ six dual losses, five were to teams ranked in the final regular season

poll conducted by USA Today and the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The other loss

was to Virginia, which was ranked for much of the 2015-16 season, but dropped out of the

top 25 in the final regular season poll.

Other highlights from the 2015-16 dual season included:

• SDSU’s 12-match dual winning streak, which started on Dec. 6 and ended Feb. 14 at

Oklahoma, set a school record;

• Eight of the 10 Jackrabbit wrestlers who competed in the Big 12 Wrestling

Championship posted winning dual records, led by 157-pounder Cody Pack’s 16-1 record;

• The Jackrabbits’ 14 dual wins were the most in the Division I era and the fourth-most

in a season in program history;

• SDSU posted back-to-back winning dual seasons for the first time at the Division I

level and for the first time since the 2001-02 (9-8) and 2002-03 (12-9) seasons, when

the Jackrabbits competed at the NCAA Division II level. The Jackrabbits compiled an 11-8

dual record during the 2014-15 campaign.

PACK REACHES 100-WIN MARK: Four-time NCAA qualifier Cody Pack became the first

Jackrabbit wrestler to reach the 100-win mark for his career in the Division I era, hitting the

milestone in dramatic fashion at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 29.

After notching two decisive victories in the early runs to run his career win total to 99,

Pack trailed ninth-seeded Markus Scheidel of Columbia (N.Y.), 5-2, entering the third period

of their quarterfinal match. Pack managed an escape seven seconds into the period and

followed moments later with a takedown and pin to secure his 100th career win and a place

in the tournament semifinals.

A senior from Quincy, California, Pack has compiled a 112-34 overall record, including a

27-3 mark so far during the 2015-16 campaign. Pack was granted an eligibility extension

by the NCAA last spring after his first two seasons were cut short due to injury. His 37 wins

last season tied for eighth-most in a single-season in program history.

Pack enters the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in sole possession of seventh

place on the Jackrabbit career wins list after breaking a tie with Chad Wickman (109-36

from 1996-99) in the season-ending dual Feb. 21 at North Dakota State. Next on the list is

Aaron Veskrna, who compiled a 114-40 record from 1999-2002.

Following are Pack’s year-by-year records:

2011-12 5-1 (missed most of season due to injury)

2012-13 15-16 (NCAA qualifier)

2013-14 28-8 (NCAA qualifier)

2014-15 37-6 (NCAA qualifier)

2015-16 27-3 (NCAA qualifier)

Career Totals 112-34 (includes 55-12 dual record)

ACADEMIC AWARDS: Eight South Dakota State University wrestlers were named to the

2016 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Wrestling Team earlier this month.

Seven of SDSU’s honorees were first-team selections for maintaining a grade-point

average of 3.20 or higher. Representing the Jackrabbits were:

• Ben Gillette, Jr., Redfield, Biology/Microbiology;

• Alex Kocer, Jr., Wagner, Agricultural Business;

• Alex Macki, So., Cambridge, Iowa, Wildlife and Fisheries;

• Nate Rotert, So., Spearfish, Early Childhood Education;

• Ben Schwery, Sr., Underwood, Iowa, Wildlife and Fisheries;

• Brance Simms, Sr., Gilmore City, Iowa, Construction Management;

• Luke Zilverberg, So., Belle Plaine, Minn., Wildlife and Fisheries.

Sophomore David Kocer was named to the second team for posting a GPA between 3.0

and 3.19. Besides meeting the GPA criteria, honorees must have participated in at least 60

percent of their team’s scheduled contests, with the exception of graduating seniors.

Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

A total of 57 student-athletes were honored on the academic team. SDSU led the 10-team

league with seven first-team selections, while Wyoming ranked first with nine overall picks.

KOCER HONORED: South Dakota State University 149-pounder Alex Kocer became the

first Jackrabbit wrestler to named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after picking up a pair of wins

in dual action against league foes in mid-February.

A junior from Wagner, Kocer scored a 20-2 technical fall over West Virginia's Zachary

Moore on Feb. 12 as the Jackrabbits extended their dual winning streak to a school-record

12 matches. He closed the weekend with a 9-5 decision against Oklahoma’s Davion Jeffries.

COACH BONO: Chris Bono has engineered a successful rebuilding process during his

tenure as head coach of the South Dakota State University wrestling program.

Now in his fourth season, Bono has helped mentor Jackrabbit wrestlers to qualify for the

NCAA Championships 12 times and has posted a 36-34 dual record.

During the 2014-15 season, the Jackrabbits posted their first winning dual record in nine

seasons with an 11-8 mark, and three SDSU wrestlers — Cody Pack, Nate Rotert and J.J.

Everard — qualified for the NCAA Championships. Pack reached the national tournament for

the third consecutive year at 157 pounds and was one win away from All-America status.

SDSU also had three national qualifiers during the 2013-14 season as Pack, Joe Brewster

and Alex Kocer all qualified out of the NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference

Championships.

While leading the Jackrabbits, Bono was also tabbed as coach for the U.S. Men's Freestyle

team at the 2013 Pan American Championships. In the world event, Coach Bono led Team

USA to a 13-point victory.

Overall, Bono has a 75-51 dual record in seven seasons as a collegiate head coach. He

previously served three seasons at Chattanooga (Tenn.), where he led the Mocs to three
