April23-25atSouthDakotaStateUniversityinBrookings.
ForFFAmembers,thismeansthreeexcitingdaysof
careerdevelopmentevents,speakers,sessions,andmore
opportunitiesforthemtoexplore.
Thisyear'sthemwillbe“Enhance!”Thestateofficers
areencouragingthemembersacrossthestatetoenhance
theirknowledge,skillsandleadershipinandoutofFFA.
Stateconventionisahugeopportunitytoprovidethe
passiontodojustthat.
Over200FFAmemberswillwalkacrosstheconvention
stageandreceivetheirStatedegree,thehighestdegree
whichcanbeprovidedbythestate.Toreceivethisdegree,
FFAmembershavetoobtaintheirchapterdegree,
completemanyhoursofcommunityservice,logatleast
300hoursintheirsupervisedagricultureexperienceorearn
atleast$1000,andmore!Alsoinsupervisedagriculture
experiences,memberswillbecompetingintheirspecialized
areasofSAE,areasofproficiency,andthefirstplacewinner
fromeveryareawilladvancetocompetetobeanational
finalistattheNationalFFAConventioninOctober.
FFAmemberswillalsocompeteforatopspotincareer
developmentevents,fromFloriculturetoVeterinaryScience
toAgronomy.Thetopteamfromeachof14differentCDE’s
willalsogettoadvancetotheNationalFFAconvention.
Toendtheconvention,the2016-2017stateofficerteam
willgivetheirretiringaddressandsaytheirgoodbyesas
thenewlyelected,2017-2018stateFFAofficerteamtakes
theirplace.
Withconventionsoclose,FFAmembersarebeginning
toEnhancetheirskillsandprepareforaseasonof
interviews,careerdevelopmenteventsandproficiencies.

relatedtothesessioncontent.DistrictOfficersreceived
workbooksandt-shirtsthatalsoreflectedthefunand
upbeattheme.
Districtofficersarrivedatoneo’clockonWednesday
andattendedasessionbeforegoingtotheCapitoland
sittinginontheHouseandSenate.Theythenattended
anothersession,hadanetiquettetrainingatdinner,headed
backtotheCapitolforroundtablesandendedthedaywith
areflection.Thenextmorning,LegislativeBreakfastwas
brightandearlyat6:30am.EveryonelistenedtoSouth
DakotaStateVeterinarianDustinOedekoven.Afterwards
therewerethreemoresessionsandthedayendedwith
theExecutiveBoardmeetingattendedbytheDistrict
presidentsandadvisors.

FFAweekbeganin1947andthefirstweek-long
eventwasheldin1948,meaningthatwearegetting
closeto70yearsofFFAweekcelebrations.Thedates
werepickedtofallontheweekofGeorgeWashington’s
birthday(onthe22nd);inrecognitionofhislegacyasan
agriculturistandfarmer.
Thisyear’sFFAweekisfromFebruary18th-25th,
anditwillbeabusyweek.AllFFAmembersacrossthe
statearewelcometocometoWinnerandparticipate
innumerousCDEeventpratcicesandlistentospeaker
RickRigsby.Otherchaptersthroughoutthestatewillbe
havingseveraldifferentactivitiesoftheirown,including
kisstheanimalcontests,pettingzoos,agOlympics,
appreciationbreakfasts,andmore.
ChaptersareencouragedtocontacttheState
ExecutiveSecretaryiftheyareinterestedinpotentially
havingastateofficervisitthemduringFFAweek.
WiththestateconventionquicklyapproachinginApril,
itistimeforseniorsinhighschoolandfreshmenincollege
toconsiderrunningforapositionontheStateFFAOfficer
team.BeingaStateOfficerisanincredibleexperience
whichprovidesnotonlyanopportunitytogivebackto
theFFA,butalsoagreatopportunitytobuildoneself
individually.Theexperiencesthatyouwillhaveasanofficer
willpositivelyimpactyoufortherestofyourlife.
Theyearstartsoffwithlargeamountsoftrainingto
helpbuildtheofficerteampersonally,whichthentransitions
intoservingtheAssociationandmembersfortheremainder
oftheyear,finishingwiththeStateConvention.TheState
officerteamisessentialtokeepingourorganizationrunning
inthestateastheyleadbothofoursummercamps,runthe
AgAdventurecenteratthestatefair,conductallchapter
anddistrictvisits,planandrunDistrictOfficertraining,and
ofcourse,leadStateConvention.
