Undergraduate Program for College of Life Sciences
Section 1: Brief Introduction to the College and Majors
Brief Introduction to the College
College of Life Sciences (CLS), South China Agricultural University, the former Department of Agricultural Biology (DAB), was founded in 1982, and its name was changed to CLS in 2001. CLS is a research teaching college, which takes biological science as its core, closely overlaps to agricultural sciences, and gives priority to fundamental research and application fundamental research.
CLS has a number of research centres, including: State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-bio-resources, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Protein Function and Regulation in Agricultural Organisms.
CLS has several teaching platforms and social service platforms, including:National Experimental Teaching Centre of Plant Biology, Experimental Teaching Centre of Modern Biotechnology in the Department of Education of Guangzhou Province, The Ministry of Agriculture Transgenic Plants with Microbial Environmental Safety Supervision and Testing Centre (Guangzhou).
The college consists of three departments: Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Department of Plant Sciences, and the centre of experiment teaching. There are 93 staff members in the college, among which 81 are teachers or researchers, 59 are professors or senior researchers. It is an energetic and high level teaching and research team with reasonable structure.
The College has a National First-level Doctoral Program of Biology. Currently, there are 2 undergraduates (Biological Science, Biotechnology), 6 graduates and 5 doctoral specialties and Biology Postdoctoral Mobile Research Station in the college. It provides a continuous education system for undergraduate students, postgraduate students and post-doctors.
Biology is First-level Key Discipline of Guangdong Province, Botany is Key discipline of State Forestry Administration.
There are Biological Science and Biological Technology, two majors of undergraduate education.
Brief Introduction to the Majors
Biological Sciences is the key major of the university, and began to recruit students in 2003. This major has special talent training classes: National Science Base Class of Biology, and
International Class Cooperated with UCD. The major train high-quality academic talents, who acquire the basic theory, basic knowledge and practice skills of Biological sciences; possess the abilities and qualities to do biological research and teaching; have the potentiality and background knowledge to pursue further studies in life science.
Biological Technology is an excellent major of Guangdong Province, and National Special Majors. It began to recruit students in 1993, and it is one of the oldest College that recruit Biological Technology undergraduate students. The major cultivate high quality applied talents, who acquire basic theory, basic knowledge, and basic skills on life science and biotechnology, who are competent to do biotechnology related jobs, like application research, technological development, and manufacturing management.
