Dashing across rough terrain for over 3 miles while chasing a personal goal drives the very best to compete against other top runners. For Cuthbertson High School cross country runner Max Walker, his path to cross country success has been full of challenges. For reference, let’s first learn more about the obstacles Max has overcome. Max was born with a Chiari Malformation of the brain. This is an incurable, chronic ill- ness. He has had several major brain surgeries and suffered a series of life threatening strokes after one of the surgeries. Also during one of his brain surgeries, Max’s face suffered exten- sive damage and left him with scarring that required several surgeries. In fact, he needs more surgeries but doesn’t want to take time off of running. Growing up Max had a speech problem due to problems with his vocal chords (related to the Chiari Malformation). This speech problem combined with the facial scarring made him very shy and he would keep his head down all of the time. His entire left side was affected by the strokes. He was unable to play contact sports because of his condition and other types of sports were difficult due to his strokes. This was really difficult because Max is a triplet and his brother is very athletic. He grew up watching Davis play baseball and football. Max’s grandfather ran in college and encouraged Max to give it a try. Max started running at the end of elementary school and hasn’t stopped. He is closely monitored by his physicians and it has completely changed his life. Being part of the Cuthbertson Cross Country team has given Max confidence, friendships and value as a contributing member of the team. He no longer holds his head down. He is happy and doing well in all aspects of his life. Most children and adults that suffer with the type of Chiari that Max has, aren’t able to live the life that he lives. The son of Melissa Walker began competing with the varsity cross country team as a ninth grader. He participated in the USATF Junior Olympics back in 2013 where he placed 12th nationally. Max also competed in the 2016 NCHSAA Cross Country State Championships. His personal best time for a 5K is 17:19. EMMA GOLDEAN

To nominate your team or a student-athlete for their service to the community, please email [email protected]

Providence Day School senior field hockey player Emma Goldean has been named the South Charlotte Sports Report Community Hero of the Week. The daugh-ter of Paul and Stacy Goldean has found great success in her sport and will continue her athletic and academic ca-reer next season at Ohio State University. Emma has been an All-State and All Conference performer while at Provi-dence Day. She was named the Female Underclassman Athlete of the Year for the Chargers last year.

Emma first began attracting the attention of college coaches last November.

“I attracted college coaches through my travel field hockey team, Charlotte Ambush. I had sent out emails before each of my tournaments, but it wasn’t really until November of my junior year when I went to a tournament

in Florida called Festival where I started to attract D1 schools. I have been a soccer player since I was 5 years old and that contributed to ability to read the field and play

with composure and patience, which is something that impressed college coaches.”Emma fell in love with Ohio State once she made the visit to the school.“When I visited it just felt right. The campus is amazing, the team is amazing, and

the coaches are exactly what I was looking for. After narrowing my decision down to two schools, Ohio State was the one that I felt I would fit best. I can’t wait to be an official Buckeye!”

Emma has also found success in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 grade point average while enrolled in Honors and AP classes. She hopes to study either Engineering or Dentistry in college.

Emma has made an impact while serving her community. “I am currently in a club called Big Brother Big Sister. I was matched with a first grade buddy and became his mentor. Every month we go to the elementary school and help our buddies with their school work. I also do various community service work through my church life group and am looking to do even more this year.”

Congratulations to Emma Goldean for being named the South Charlotte Sports Report Community Hero of the Week.

“THE LEAGUE OF CHAMPIONS”

baseball ¥ softball ¥ football ¥ track basketball ¥ rugby ¥ cheerleadõng

Max is working extremely hard this season to contribute to the Cavaliers suc-cess with improved times. He has set a goal for his team to improve upon their tenth place finish in the state championship last season.

“This was the first time Cuthbertson’s Boys had made it to states since mov-ing up to 3A status, and we are looking to use the experience to place even better this year.”

It’s important to note that Max has been fortunate to find a coach that has provided the inspiration to find success in cross country. That coach is Kirk Walsh, the Cuthbertson High School Head Cross Country Coach. Without a doubt, Coach Walsh is Max’s hero according to his mom, Melissa.

“He has been Max’s coach for six years. Max’s father left when Max was 11. Coach Walsh stepped in and has been a mentor and supporter for Max ever since. He understands Max’s illness and develops special plans and programs for him to be able to train safely. He encourages Max to reach his full potential and has made him believe in himself. For so long Max had been told “you can’t” and Kirk has always told him that “you can”. He has given him a priceless gift.”

“I would never have imagined that Max would be doing what he is doing. He has been through so much and will continue to fight this illness his entire life. Running has changed everything for Max. Running has given Max the confi-dence he needs to be successful in all aspects of his life. Coach Kirk always says that “Today is going to be awesome” and now Max believes it.”

Max has also found great success inside the classroom. “Cross Country has taught me discipline in all areas of my life, and that in-

cludes academics. I am an A average student, and aim to challenge myself with course loads of AP and Honors level classes. I am not sure of the exact grade point average, but it is higher than a 4.4 . Clubs have proven to be a great way for me to meet like-minded peers, and am involved in several, including: Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Chinese Club.”

Max is also active in community service with The Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“The club has provided me with many valuable opportunities for commu-nity service. In the past, I have participated in events focusing around helping schools and families in need. My family and I also share an interest in assisting those with Special Needs. We serve these groups through volunteering at annual events like Special Olympics and Joy Prom.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report is extremely proud of Max Walker for working his way past life’s obstacles to find success. We know he will continue to work hard and achieve all of his goals. We also want to give a very special thank you to Coach Walsh for the role he has played in this magical story. Coach Walsh inspired Max and has helped him build a pathway to success. KATE BARCLEY HAS A SPORT FOR ALL THREE SEASONS

Covenant Day School senior three sport athlete Kate Barclay is off and running with her first sport of the 2017-2018 sports season. She is playing field hockey for the Lions and will move over to basketball for the winter and then softball for the spring. The 17 year old daugh-ter of Bill and Kristy Barcley stays busy on the field and in the classroom.

Last season on the softball field, Kate earned all con-ference honors for the Lions. She believes softball is her best sport.

Kate loves to be a part of all competition and says the most exciting thing about sports to her is winning a close game against a talented team.

Inside the classroom, Kate is an extremely success-ful student, carrying a 4.47 grade point average. She is

a member of the National Honor Society and also a member of the Beta Club at Covenant Day School. Through the Beta Club, Kate is active in volunteer work inside the community. She also spends time volunteering inside her church.

We send out our best wishes for a successful senior season to three sport ath-lete Kate Barcley.
