About the Project The five-mile South Central Light Rail Extension will connect with the current light rail system in downtown Phoenix and operate south to Baseline Road. In January 2016, the Phoenix City Council approved advancing the opening date of the South Central Light Rail Extension from 2034 to 2023. The advancement is funded through Transportation 2050, a 35-year multi-modal transportation plan approved by Phoenix voters in August 2015. The South Central corridor is one of seven project areas identified by the U.S. Department of Transportation for inclusion in its Ladders of Opportunity Transportation Empowerment Pilot (LadderSTEP) program. The LadderSTEP Pilot program aims to build and restore connections, develop workforce capacity, and catalyze neighborhood revitalization through planned transportation projects. PROJECT STATUS NEXT STEPS • Following the environmental approval from the Federal Transit Administration in early 2017, the project is now in the initial design phase. • The Phoenix City Council approved a $50 million agreement to fund final design and pre-construction plans for the South Central Light Rail Extension Project, in April 2017. • In September 2017, the Phoenix City Council approved creating a transfer hub to allow convenient connections to the South Central Extension and future light rail lines. The hub will include two new stations between Central and First avenues on Jefferson and Washington streets, and a station on Central between Washington and Jefferson. • The Valley Metro Board of Directors approved selection of AECOM as the project design team in May 2017, Kiewit as the project construction contractor (Construction Manager at Risk) in June 2017 and 14 project artists in August 2017. The city of Phoenix, in partnership with Valley Metro, will launch an early action business assistance program in spring 2018. The program will provide additional resources to businesses to help them remain successful during construction. Survey work will continue through early 2018 to gather utility data and complete various infrastructure inspections.
