Special mention to Leigh and Steph who finished first in the family event but were ineligible as they weren’t family members (nice try!).

HEINZ STREET, WHITE HILLS - 21ST JULY 2018 ( 56 Competitors)

Raffle Donor: Bryce/Justice Family Raffle Winner: Peter Hayes

On Saturday, the Champions Supa IGA South Bendigo Athletic Club was run at Heinz Street, White Hills. This week, the club held its AFL family run with competitors encouraged to wear their

teams’ colours and it was great to see the range of supported teams.

Even though the course is generally flat, the main obstacles for the day were a few puddles that runners had to avoid. Gary Mahon managed a dual win in both the Reilly’s Home Appliances 3km with a time of 19.10 as well as the Intersport Bicknell’s 1500m with a time of 8.46.

In the Reilly’s Home Appliances 3km, Gary was followed closely home by Sasha Pearce with Alex Wallace running the fastest time of 11.46 and Caitlin Campbell taking home the fastest female for the day (13.40). In the Intersport Bicknell’s 1500m, there was a sprint for second and third place between father and son duo Josh and Dustin Ketter with young Dustin coming across the line in second place.

Little Charlie Fox sprinted across the line first in the Bendigo Toyworld Under 10 800m and was also the fastest female on the day (4.03) with Kai Pearce a close second who took out fastest time for this event with 3.08.

South Bendigo member Yazmin Hayes is continuing her amazing form this year with a win at the Athletics Victoria under 18 road race at Albert Park. Congratulations also go to Taryn Furletti, Debbie Kirne and Archie Reid who also placed well in their races. And finally, last week saw many of our younger runners compete at the Schools State Cross Country Championships held at Bundoora. It was difficult running with strong winds, however there were some PBs on the day which was fantastic to see. Congratulations to all our members who competed on the day.

Raffle Donor: Peter Hayes Raffle Winner: Peter Curtis, Pearce family

On Saturday, the Champions Supa IGA South Bendigo Athletic Club was run at Pearce’s Road, Mandurang. This is one of the clubs’ more challenging courses with several hills to test out runners. Even though the wind was quite strong, there were a couple of course records set on the day by Kai Pearce and Chelsea Tickell in the Bendigo Toyworld Under 10 800m which was fantastic to see. Both these runners have had a good season this year and are continuing to improve. In the Skinners Plaster 6.5km run, President Peter Curtis came across the line first and also recorded the fastest time of 27.34 with Jackie Guillou 36.45 the fastest female on the day. There was a large contingent in both the Reilly’s Home Appliances 3km and Intersport Bicknell’s 1500m races and it was great to see how close runners finished across the line.

DONNA LEE TICKELL 13.9.75 TO 10-05-90

Tragically killed at age 14 years.

A much loved, and loving family person, who enjoyed life to the fullest. An unselfish girl who wished the best for everyone else. Her zest for life is well remembered by those who had the fortune to have known Donna. Her sporting attitude, was a lesson many could well adopt. No complaints, or regrets, just get on with the job. Her “cheeky” ( tom boyish ) manner, oozing personality, was an infectious one, which left one feeling good about yourself and proud to be in her company. Not the fastest athlete around at the time, but an ambassador for her peers, a credit to herself and her family. Every so often a person of outstanding credential comes along. Donna WAS one of those people. A great mate for her brother Lucas who wears a picture of his late sister tattooed proudly on his chest. Their ‘scraps’ left many mystified. Donna was a willing, energetic worker for the Club, helping in any way she could. A terrific club mate, who was always on the sidelines, to offer encouragement and praise to fellow athletes. MANDURANG OVAL, MANDURANG 18/8/2018 (41 Competitors)

Raffle Donor: Matt Barkla Raffle Winners: Peter Barrett, Yazmin Hayes, Mandy Worthington

On Saturday, the Champions Supa IGA South Bendigo Athletic Club held their Club Championships at the Mandurang Oval, Mandurang. This is the second time we’ve held an event there this year, and as mentioned last time, this is one of the clubs’ more challenging courses. Not only did runners have to contend with a heavy downpour of rain in the middle of the longer 6.5 km and 3 km races, they were also faced with a muddy course, strong winds and hills that certainly tested them this week.

In the Hairem Scarem 6.5km and 3km races, all runners started together and made their way around the oval and onto the road where they were faced with the first of the hills. With the wind howling up the road, runners found it difficult on the return trip with the head wind, but luckily the rain had eased somewhat. In the 6.5 km run, Daniel Plowright powered home with a time of 24.53 and Anna deVrieze crossed the line with the fastest female time of 27.55.

In the Hairem Scarem 3km run, Yazmin Hayes continued her form this year coming across the line first with a time of 10.33. On the day, Nick Wallace finished strong with the fastest time of 11.02.

Although there was a small contingent in the Hairem Scarem Under 10 800 m, it was great to see the young runners complete in such ordinary conditions. Chelsea Tickell took home the fastest time (3.18) and Lucius Stevens was the fastest male on the day with a time of 3.47.

The last run of the day was the Hairem Scarem 1500 m. Although the rain had cleared up, the wind was strong quite strong. All runners finished strong but it was Sebastyn Andrea who took line honours with the fastest time of 5.13 and Caitlyn Curtis finishing as the fastest female on the day (9.15).

PETER CURTIS SNR. MEMORIAL 1500M

Vale Peter Curtis Snr

26/08/1955-25/12/2016

Peter Curtis Snr was a dedicated South Bendigo man ever since his eldest daughter Shayleen joined the club in the late 90’s.

The “1 Eyed” Collingwood supporter even boasted a South Bendigo Tattoo visible for all to see. The regular limit marker always provided good incentive to chase. In 2011 he lost the vision in his

only eye, making the effort to continue even more inspiring. For 5 years he headed out with his trusty Bundi Basher leading the way.

In 2007 he began his role as Canteen Manager, a role that he loved and held when he passed. He always made sure the Kettle was hot, and offered anyone and everyone any hot drink he could

possibly supply. His role as canteen manager, Committee member and overall club helper was such that in 2010 he

was awarded Best Club Contributor. Peter ran his last 1500m race on the 23rd of April 2016 at Miller’s Flat, a race that also featured Jess

and Peter Jnr, the two youngest of his three children. Even after this race he continued to be a presence at the club until his sudden passing on Christmas morning 2016.

The Inaugural Peter Curtis Snr Memorial race was held at Atlas Rd, Peter’s “home ground”, on what would have been his 62nd Birthday.

Peter was a much loved member of South Bendigo Athletic Club, and is missed by all that had the honour of meeting him.

Chelsea Tickell continues her good form this season with another fastest time of 3.01 (course record) followed immediately by Sam Noden who ran a time of 3.09 and was fastest male. This week, the Intersport Bicknell’s 1500m was a sealed handicap in honour of Peter Curtis Senior who passed away in 2016.
