After a huge pre-season movement of players into and out of the club the 2017 season got underway

without 2016 Premiership players Brandon Hurt, Lionel Brown, Jaylon Wingfield, Daniel Roach and Greg

Shirley. Co-captain Adam Grantham and Dylan Barnett missed a huge part of the season through injury.

On the plus side the return of eventual premiership players Gary Warren, Clayton Milera, Mark Horner,

Jason Lukich and Daniel Dohnt plus picking up Josh Ackland balanced our losses.

West in Round 1 saw a few of our deserters victorious by 60 points. A bad 7 point loss to Port in Round 3

saw a shaky start to the season. A round 4 win over Solomontown evened the win/loss at 2 all. West

triumphed by 10 points in Round 6 (3 all). Round nine saw us run into the Solomontown juggernaut and a

43 point loss (5-4). A run of 4 wins (including a 166 point win over Port), took it to 9-4 but another big

loss by 77 points to Solomontown (9-5) saw us playing for second spot at best. Three more wins sewed

up second spot (12-5) and a second semi clash in Port Pirie with Solomontown who had lost just that one

game in Round 4.

Up by 2 points at quarter time and 12 points at half time, a third quarter 8 goal blitz saw us 47 points up

and eventual 49 point winners and into the Grand Final for a chance for back to back premierships. A

windy day at Central Oval had Solomontown in front by 5 points at quarter time but behind by 31 points

at half time. They had an excellent third quarter to turn 2 points in front at three quarter time. A 5

goal to 1 goal final quarter saw us as back to back premiers and now aiming for a threepeat in 2018. I

invite everyone to join us and do what you can to achieve this goal.

Individual highlights include Darcy Kildea winning the Madigan Medal and Matt Downey coming a close

second. Brendon Colson took out the goalkicking trophy with 83 goals.

2017 has been another big year for our club given this is the second full year at the Central Oval

complex, several new Committee people coming on board and a Back to Back A Grade premiership for the

club.

Thanks also to our bar staff who have endured some hectic activity from time to time. Thanks

particularly to the Social Committee who have been a huge help to us once again and thanks to the

Management Committee and Football Committee and also the Colts Committee who provide us with

juniors year after year. The Sponsors and Vice Presidents were also an essential part of the clubs

success and we thank them for their contributions in 2017.

Coach James Boles has had another great year at the helm taking out his second premiership in his

second year of coaching the club with great help from the Football Committee in recruiting new players

to the club when numbers did not look good earlier in the season.

The B’s, although losing the Grand Final also had a great year and we would like to thank Marcus Gill for

his hard work and dedication as coach during the year in what is the hardest job at the club.

Our U/18’s under Anthony Everett missed out on the finals, several U/18’s played ’A’ grade footy and

with a young side did well to compete as they did, well done Buck and the boy’s who are the future of our

club.

Many thanks also to those who worked on the Bar and Kitchen roster, particularly Peter Trewartha, our

time keeper Rick Gill who does 3 or 4 games week in week out, our Trainers under Val Waterworth and

our Drinks Stewards, Team managers and all other helpers in 2017.

Thanks to the players, coaches and Footy Committee for all your efforts this season which brought the

ultimate reward.

B Grade Report

The B Grade had a great year finishing top at the end of minor round and a great win against Sollies took

the team to its third grand final in 3 years. After 17 rounds, the Bulldogs were the best side in the

league, finishing two points above Sollies, before clinching a 42-point win over the Port Pirie side to earn

a spot in the decider. Unfortunately the boys couldn’t take it off in what was shocking conditions on the

day.

The team had some great helpers during the season and many thanks to Craig Ritter, Assistant coach

and Team Manager, Runners David Robinson and Anthony Anno, Timekeeper Ricky Gill and Guernsey

Cleaner Sue Magarey who supported Coach Marcus Gill.

Most consistent players for the year as per Sporting pulse included Jack Magarey, James Little, Tim

Amos, Chris Grantham, Chris Heron, Kyle Aitken, Matthew Grantham, Sydney Waye and Daniel Glass.

Goalkickers included Tim Amos with 50 goals, and others to contribute included Kyle Aitken 14, Brett

Jones 12 and Sydney Waye 12.

Under 18’s Report

2017 was always going to be a year with some challenges. A transitional year with dwindling numbers at

times low interest and lost a lot of experience and leadership from the previous season

Fortunately, we had quality players in there 2nd year of under 18 and some talent coming in from the

under 15s due to the points system and demand from the senior side. One or two players where required

to play A grade on a regular basis.

When the season started we showed we could match sides but we also showed we were not up to the

challenge of staying in the contest basically playing one good quarter and then suffering on the

scoreboard with some comprehensive losses. We were reactive not proactive and at times timid, the

players confidence was low and it was very difficult for all involved. Being a successful winning side

became irrelevant and player development and belief became the focus.

At the closure of the season we had won 3 games, had an impressive win against a final bound side and

started to play a style of footy that will put this group in a great position to win consistently next

season.

The win against West created a lot of belief we had just successfully defeated Lions by 17 goals in the

battle for the spoon then we set out to claim a Port Augusta scalp

Fortunately, we had Will Bolitho and Kareem Aitkin available they provide the hardness and class that is

required. The win was well received and provided a sense of pride and relief knowing all the players had

been on the receiving end socially and at school.

Individually Will Bolitho (now a dual A grade premiership player) Kareem Aitkin , Rowan Irvine, Will

Waterworth and Paul Glass played A grade footy Corey Cuffe, Rowan Irvine and Flynn Everett

represented the club in the reserves. All players showed significant improvement.

I have no doubt this group will produce quality senior footballers in a very short time. They are all clear

in what is required individually for progression to senior football, the question will be are they

committed and prepared to do the hard work and make the required changes to get the absolute best

out of themselves to achieve in this great game.

I would firstly like to thank the playing group for their support, humour, honesty, effort, respect and

the current U15 lads that made themselves available when needed.

Page 5: SOUTH AUGUSTA FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2017communitywebs.org/safc/assets/south-yearbook-2017.pdf · 2020. 4. 2. · Worst thing Bolsey can say at training – ‘It’s not a punishment’

Many thanks to Donna Irvine as team manager, Jason Waterworth / Gary Beyer Assistants and Anthony

Anno/ Andrew Reynolds, Runner James Boles and Marcus Gill for the support as senior coaches' pre-

season and training in general.

On reflection this was a year of friendships and understanding forged through the playing group and

coaching staff a year I enjoyed immensely and will look forward to next year with confidence and

anticipation knowing the abilities of this group. Thanks Buck.

Under 15s Report

This season saw the lads finish in 4th position after losing the elimination final to West. Wins were hard

to come by but the core group of lads stuck to the task each week and fronted up with the Bulldog spirit

which was pleasing to see.

Although our team was a lot physically smaller than all other teams the future is still looking bright with

a number of lads possessing great skill and when their bodies mature they will play plenty of senior

football for the mighty white V.

At the time of printing we had not held our presentations so look to future bulletins for trophy winners.

We could not have got through the season without the assistance of so many people including the

parents who goal umpired and supplied drinks, our field umpires, Marcus Gill, Jack Menzies, Shane

Kennedy and Caleb Ritter, Guernsey washers, Megan Waterworth and Michelle Smith, Water boys, Jack

Irons, Joe Clancy, Sam Chamberlin and Daniel Dohnt who helped out with training.

Special thanks go to our regular umpire Lee Willcock who for many years has volunteered his time to

umpire this grade. His effort in supporting junior football in our club is enormous and should not be

overlooked.

To our Runner Anthony ( Hey Hey) Anno a special mention. It’s not every day you have a club legend

volunteer his time and run for 3 grades most weekends and his enthusiasm and time for the lads was

great to see.

The coach of this side was Sam Maule who for a young bloke showed a great deal of maturity and

willingness to undertake this role. The lads loved the way he coached and he infected them with his

attitude towards keeping The Bulldog spirit alive. I’m sure nothing would make him prouder than playing

alongside a few of his players in a few years’ time.

Next year 10 lads go up to under 18 and I’m sure under the guidance of Buck Everett the will grow even

more. Jak Waterworth

Under 13s report

What a challenging but rewarding season it was for all players involved, It was extremely satisfying to

see all players contribute to the team development throughout the season.

Although the Team had only 2 wins during the season every game that they played you could see a

massive improvement with their understanding of the game along with their skill development, It was

also great to receive positive feedback from people not directly involved within the team mentioning

that the style of old fashion footy was a pleasure to watch.

After a few tough weeks of getting beaten comprehensively earlier in the season the group managed to

get their 1st win on the board by 2 goals against Centrals at Braddock Oval In a cracking contest with

everyone celebrating in a well- rounded team effort. It took another 4 to 5 weeks to chalk up their 2nd

victory of the season at Chinnery Oval in what can only be described as an emphatic win defeating

Centrals again 9-20-74 to 0-0-0, This win was a result of solid performances over the previous few

games along with all players realizing that they can be more than competitive if they work hard,

understand their roles in the team & execute their skills for an extended period better than the

opposition. The team was positive leading into the last few rounds before the finals series by having

some more competitive games against some quality opposition. We headed into our 1st Semi-final battle

against Centrals with plenty of confidence but narrowly just missed out on victory going down by 1 point

in a classic game of footy by both sides.

Page 6: SOUTH AUGUSTA FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2017communitywebs.org/safc/assets/south-yearbook-2017.pdf · 2020. 4. 2. · Worst thing Bolsey can say at training – ‘It’s not a punishment’

A massive thank you to all of the U11 players that helped out on various occasions during the season

especially Jack Franklin & Matthew Webb who were regular inclusions, All U11 players contributed

extremely well & should be very proud of their efforts at a higher standard.

Thank you also to all of the parents/supporters during the season for your help & support, it was greatly

appreciated by myself & the team along with the Junior Committee for all of their hard work behind the

scenes.

Congratulations to the following award recipients this year.

B&F (Connor Beattie-Dadleh)

Runner Up B&F (Issac Keeler)

Best Team Man (Conner Bowshire)

Coach's Award (Heath Green)

Development Award (Sam Chamberlain)

Best 1st Year Player (Charissa Murray)

I look forward to see how the group develops over the coming seasons & I wish all players the best of

luck with their future endeavours.

Finally I would recommend to all players to give themselves an honest assessment of their own

contributions this year heading into next season so they can continue to grow & develop as individuals

and as a group. Matthew Millard

Under 11’s and Under 9’s Report

Our U/11s have had a huge improvement over the year through working extremely hard at training and

developing well. Working together has been our goal for the year and our young footballers are really

getting on top of it. It has shown in our much closer results against a tough competition. Our 3 girls had

the opportunity to run in the midfield in ruck and both rover roles and were been exceptional. We are

very proud of how our young footballers have progressed the last year and expect more to come next

year . Some of our consistent players have been Chernille Digance, Whalley Yeates, Lewis Renshaw,

Annalyse Reid, Addyson Di Poalo, Jack Franklin and Reese Williams.

Numbers were good in both grades with both Under 11 and under 9s having around 20 players .

Coach Chris Heritage and Dean McInnis would like to thank all the parents who contributed during the

year. The Under 7s played a few games at half time of the seniors. Many thanks to all the coaches and

helpers in these grades as they are the starting point to a football career in the senior ranks and a very

important part of the club.

2017 Social Committee Report

In 2017, with the support of the Management Committee, and volunteers, the Social Committee

have worked hard to offer a variety of club functions that entertained club members of all

ages. Our club is in the enviable position of being located in such a fantastic venue that some

new events were planned around the best use of this.

The Mystery Progressive Dinner and Family Day utilised many areas of the complex rather than just

being isolated to the Club or Function Room.

Mystery Progressive Dinner: A fantastic night was had by all and it was extremely well organised by

the Workflow Co-ordinator Lee-Anne Maule and her team.

We sold 61 tickets for the 3 course Progressive Dinner, catered for by Head Catering and the Social

Committee. Entrée was enjoyed downstairs and outside with finger foods served by Nathan’s

waitresses. The main course was a sit down meal in the downstairs Conference Room.

Then the entourage made its way upstairs to the Function Room which was set up like a church for

the congregation to greet the gorgeous bride and attend a Mock Wedding.

Priest – Lee-Anne Maule

Bride – Spindles Grantham

Groom – Jessie Maule

Bridal Party – Nat Herbstreit, Georgia Irvine, Jack Menzies, Sam Maule

Father of the Bride – Jenny Grantham

MC – Marcus Gill/Spindles Grantham

Dessert was served in the club after the traditional cutting of the wedding cake, garter and bouquet

throwing. The bar staff did an exceptional job right throughout the night.

Family Day: After a very successful Family Day, the Social Committee would like to say a very big

thank you to all our volunteers!! Thanks to our popcorn lady who travelled from Port Pirie, Megan

Collins our face painter, Alan Phillips who did the big screen, Bec’s Jump and Play for the Jumping

Castle and Sumo Suits supervised by Sam Maule, Aaron Huxtable for his guest appearances, Shane

Kennedy and the cooks for our BBQ, Colts Committee and families for the donations at the cake stall,

Mick Kerin and the Senior players for the coaching clinic, Peter Trewartha for his work at the

downstairs bar, Simon Owens for his work on the microphone and last but not least our secretary

Judith Barnett who did our shopping & anything else asked of her.

We hope everyone had a fantastic day!!! The weather could have been kinder but the numbers

attending indicate that the idea of getting together for some family fun like our old club picnics is

Page 9: SOUTH AUGUSTA FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2017communitywebs.org/safc/assets/south-yearbook-2017.pdf · 2020. 4. 2. · Worst thing Bolsey can say at training – ‘It’s not a punishment’

worth pursuing. South Augusta is a great family club and we want this tradition to continue….look out

for a bigger and better Family Day in 2018!! The plan is to make this an annual event that members of

all ages can enjoy and includes the future of our club by combining efforts with the Colts Committee.

Theme Night – Woodstock: Our younger Social Committee members put their hands up to run this

event ably led by Jessie Maule and Georgia Irvine.

They created and set the scene for a groovy atmosphere that night with decorations and seating full

of tie-dye, cushions, and peace signs. A huge effort was put into costumes of those that attended to

make a fun filled night. Again the poster created by Megan Collins set the mood for the event & the

DJ kept the hits coming. Let’s see if we can come up with some more new ideas for next year’s theme

night!!!

The Red & White Masquerade Ball : What a great night!!

Over 200 tickets were sold. Everyone who attended had gone to huge efforts to look beautiful &

handsome in their outfits and masks. Congratulations to the sash winners!!

We were lucky enough to have My Friend Billy supply us with a gorgeous flower wall for photos,

thanks Jessie Maule. The bar staff did an incredible job, working hard all night and the introduction

of drink tickets was successful and intended to be used for other large events.

Thanks to the Lions Club for the cooking and distribution of supper, Erika Owens for photography,

DJ Leske, Robbie Miller and Alyssa Spilsbury for entertaining us with the music at the beginning of

the night. Thanks must go to the Social Committee members for their work in organising & setting up

this big event, decorations, working the door, cooking, and the clean up next day.

Recovery Sunday cook up of sausages & steaks went well. It may have been helpful using the televised

event as a catalyst to encourage people to attend but it is something to think about for next year.

Change can be a good thing and can come in many forms!!

A new coffee machine – who doesn’t love an Espresso Martini!!

Salad Making aka Thirsty Thursday:Anybody is welcome to join our happy clan of helpers to make

salads, have a chat, a few laughs and now the chance to enjoy a lovely coffee from the club’s new

coffee machine. Some have even taken on the role of feeding the hungry footballers occasionally

after training on a Thursday. They have the salad making down to such a fine art that a new challenge

was needed! Thursday night training held at Central Oval has included pasta nights, taco night,

casseroles, pizza night & hamburgers. The look on the players faces when they see us lined up with

our delicious food is priceless! Second servings is often enjoyed and very little is left over for Ritts’

chooks!! Thanks to those Thirsty Thursday workers who volunteer to add another fun & supportive

element to our club!!

Page 10: SOUTH AUGUSTA FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2017communitywebs.org/safc/assets/south-yearbook-2017.pdf · 2020. 4. 2. · Worst thing Bolsey can say at training – ‘It’s not a punishment’

Looking forward to 2018!!!

Being a representative on the Management Committee and Social Committee, has allowed the

lines of communication between the volunteers that put so much effort into whatever is asked

of them and those who make decisions on future outcomes of our club be accessible, supportive

and approachable.

A lot of people are passionate & enthusiastic about promoting a social atmosphere at the South

Augusta Football Club, where new people and existing members can get along to these events,

have fun and support our great club.

Once again it is important to acknowledge that our club is blessed with volunteers who do so

much behind the scenes to enable the members to be entertained, enjoy a meal and organise

events. If you feel like you would like to join us on the Social Committee in any capacity then

please do so, let’s work together to make our great club greater!!

Cheers Jenny Grantham, For SAFC Social Committee
