South Africa, as a country, continues to grow. Over the last year we have improved

our ICCA ranking from 37 to 34. In 2013, South Africa hosted 118 meetings, officially making it the Number One convention destination in Africa and the Middle East. This is amazing if you consider the increase in global competitors.

Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo, executive manager of South Africa

National Convention Bureau, and her team are constantly working and improving our ranking by playing a pivotal role through Team SA in bringing business events into our country.

They have made all the difference and work hard to constantly promote our destination as a top business events destination, but they cannot do it alone. They need Team SA support in all their efforts.

Cape Town remains our top city, and the top African city, followed by Durban, which has done exceptionally well since the inception of the Durban KZN Convention Bureau, with all credit to James Seymour and his team. Both cities are placed in the top 100 cities in the world for business events.

Durban rose from 157 to 97, while Cape Town remains the top African city from 60 to 52 in the world and Johannesburg at 136, then Pretoria at 219 and, finally, Stellenbosch at 242.

All this good news is super, which goes to show South Africa is a top business events destination. The

business events industry is ever-changing – people move, technology advances, competition increases, but one thing I hope stays the same is the passion. This industry is filled with passionate people who want to see South Africa grow its business events quota.

Over the last year, we welcomed our new Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom. Mr Hanekom took over the portfolio from Marthinus van Schalkwyk.

South Africa is a resilient destination, and interest in the country as a business events destination is on the increase.

I have no doubt, that with the assistance of the National Convention Bureau, and all the city and provincial convention bureaux, South Africa will continue to strengthen its position on the global business events stage.
