GMIT STUDENTS’ UNION ENCOURAGES STUDENTS, PARENTS & FAMILIES TO CONTACT TDs, CALLS OUT GALWAY GOVERNMENT TDs Political Parties Must Honour Pre-election Promises on Third Level Fees & Student Supports

GMIT Students’ Union and the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) recently placed a full page advertisement in a number of national newspapers branding Government TDs, including Galway’s Derek Nolan, Brian Walsh, Sean Kyne, Paul Connaughton Jnr., Ciaran Cannon and Colm Keaveney, as ‘Liars’. The advertisements, aimed at ensuring the Government honours its

pre-election promises on 3rd level fees, lists the name along with the political party, email address and phone number of every Government TD.

On February 21st, during the final week of campaigning in Election 2011, the then Labour Party Spokesperson on Education and current Education Minister Ruairí Quinn publicly signed a USI pledge on behalf of the Labour Party stating:

“I, Ruairi Quinn, Education Spokesperson for the Labour Party hereby pledge that if elected, we will oppose and campaign against any

REPEAT ‘EXAM ONLY’ FEE As some of you may be aware a decision was taken by the GMIT Governing Body to increase the fee for an ‘exam only’ repeat of a module from 30 euro per module to a 300 euro flat charge, regardless of the number of modules. The justification for this increase was that:1) The huge discrepancy between the exam only fee and repeat attend was disincentivising students from repeat attending, increasing failure rates2) Built in to the increase, ‘exam only’ repeat students could now have full access to college services such as Library, IT and Moodle facilities which they did not in the past After vehement opposition from the Students’ Union, it was today agreed at Governing Body that the ‘exam only’ repeat fee for 5 credits would be reduced by two-thirds to 100 euro, for 10 credits to 200 euro, and capped at 300 euro for 15 credits and above, overturning the previous decision. The full access to facilities will still be provided. Despite a still significant financial increase from last year’s fees schedule, this represents a much more equitable solution than what we were originally looking at, and I would see it as somewhat of a ‘win’ for the Students’ Union on that basis.

CANTEEN THEFT GMIT Catering Co. have made us aware of a number of robberies which have taken place in the canteen over the past couple of weeks, which have escalated significantly. They have been able to identify the students involved through CCTV footage, and although we are trying to ensure that these incidents be viewed leniently at this point of the year, it has got to the stage where any further incidents will be brought to the Disciplinary Committee here in the college. We would ask you to bear this in mind over the course of the year.

(continued from cover page)This Grant is often the only source of funding students have to support their studies. If the State and the Government are to truly cherish all the children of the country equally, then this Grant must be supported and we will not support any Government that fails in this regard.”

The following day (February 22nd) party leader and current Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore TD also signed the pledge, publicly re-affirming the Labour Party’s commitment on 3rd level fees. Fine Gael also made a strong commitment on education in its election manifesto, stating that the party would not increase 3rd level fees further.

“We will not increase the student registration fee further. Instead, we will pursue greater pay and non-pay efficiencies in the third level system through greater flexibility in working arrangements, in line with the Croke Park Agreement.’ (Fine Gael Election Manifesto)”

Following sustained media speculation surrounding yet another increase in 3rd level fees, USI contacted every Government TD by post and telephone over the last two months asking them to stand by their pre-election promises. Despite vocal and sustained undertakings on third level education during election 2011 not a single TD was now willing to stand by their pre-election promises.

The national newspaper advertisement forms part of a major campaign being launched today by the USI. Amongst other elements, the campaign will also feature a large-scale student protest outside Government Buildings on November 16th to protect students and their families from becoming the victims of a political U-turn.

USI President, Gary Redmond said“During the election USI registered over 15,000 students to vote. Young people turned out in unprecedented numbers to vote in the recent general election. Many of these young people were influenced in their decision by the Labour Party’s commitment, championed by Ruairí Quinn and party leader Eamon Gilmore, not to increase third level fees in any form. Ireland is tragically losing the future drivers of our Smart Economy, with thousands of valuable graduates having already left Irish shores and many thousands more preparing to follow suit.

There are currently 3 choices for young Irish people – college, emigration or the dole. Any increase in college fees or additional cuts to student supports will ensure that a 3rd level education is not an option for thousands of young people across the country.

A recent survey conducted by the DIT Office of Campus life put the cost of a 4 year degree at €30,764 for a student living away from home. On top of this students must pay fees of €2,000 per annum in addition to local college levies for sports and student facilities resulting in the total cost of a year degree approaching €40,000.

The credibility of the Coalition Government and its political parties is under the spotlight on this issue and the USI will vigorously campaign to ensure that pre-election pledges are honoured. Education is central to the recovery of the Irish economy and it cannot be compromised.”

gmitsu_handbook 1112.indd 6 04/09/2011 19:57:16

We have witnessed an unprecedented surge of students in extreme financial difficulty here at GMIT SU since the beginning of this academic year, far above and beyond what would have been considered reasonable in previous years. This is clearly as a result of the current economic climate coupled with previous registration fee hikes and grant cutbacks undertaken by the previous government.

Some of these students are just about able to make ends meet and survive in college, while we have seen others who have been simply forced to drop out. Many of these same students and their families cast their vote on the basis of election promises undertaken by both Coalition partners, primarily the Labour Party.

However, the furious backtracking which now appears to be taking place by these same people that students up and down the country put their faith in, amounts to nothing less than an outright con job of our students here in GMIT, and nationwide. These parties were acutely aware of the difficult situation facing our country, and yet made cast iron guarantees to students and parents in order to achieve electoral gain.

We already have the highest level of fees in the entire OECD area after the United Kingdom, and the cuts which have been made to the grant in recent Budgets has savaged the income of many students. Any further financial pressures being placed on students and parents will have a devastating immediate and long-term impact on higher education in this country.

It is without question that a significant portion of the electoral success of our first-time Labour Party TD’s here in Galway, Derek Nolan and Colm Keaveney, could be attributed to the strong support of many of the more than 20,000 students based in this county, on the basis of the pledge committed to by their party.

I would call on them, along with Brian Walsh TD, Sean Kyne TD, Paul Connaughton Jnr. TD and Ciaran Cannon TD, to clarify their position on the electoral promises made by the Labour Party and Fine Gael a mere 8 months ago, as a matter of urgency.

GMIT STUDENTS UNION SAYS: DON’T WALK HOME ALONE!

With the dark evenings closing in, GMIT Students’ Union has re-launched their “Don’t Walk Home Alone” campaign.

The Students’ Union and Cara Cabs have combined in this campaign again to ensure students will be at their safest when making the journey home from a college night out. If finance is a problem, you simply hand over your student ID card to Cara Cabs for a safe journey, and it will be returned when you have the money to pay the fare.

Alan Doherty, Vice President/Welfare officer of GMIT Students’ Union, advises everyone to take full advantage of the system and not to take any risks on a night out.

He stated that, “Student safety is a major issue for us especially when they may be vulnerable as could be the case on a night out. This service ensures student safety is maintained and we are delighted to be apart of that”.

GMIT Students Union would like to thank Cara Cabs for their support and loyalty in providing this system for student’s welfare. Brendan Wallace from Cara Cabs acknowledged the importance of the scheme, adding that to get students home safely is enough of a fare for him. He looks forward to continuing the campaign for years to come.

Rousing welcome for President-electGMIT students and staff gave a rousing welcome to presidential candidate (now President-elect) Michael D Higgins when he visited GMIT on 26 Oct at the invitation of first year students of Irish Legal Systems. The students invited all presidential candidates; Sean Gallagher sent his apologies while the others failed to respond.

A loud cheer went up when the President-elect entered the theatre with his wife Sabina and campaigners. He spoke eloquently and passionately about the role of the President and his vision for the country, and took questions from the floor, promising to return if elected.

The visit was organised by the students and their lecturers Deirdre McHugh and Joe Farrell, pictured right, with Joe O’Connor, SU President, and Michael Hannon, GMIT Registrar.

The inauguration chair that will be used in the inaugural ceremony for President-elect Michael D Higgins on Friday has been designed and made by GMIT Letterfrack graduate John Lee. Based in Maynooth, John graduated from the Furniture Design and Manufacture programme in 1993. He was awarded the commission following a tendering process conducted by the OPW to

replace the previous chair, the “Viceregal Throne”, made in the 19th Century.

Anthony Clare, lecturer and Programme Chairperson, says staff and students are delighted and can’t wait to see the chair on Friday: “When Michael D was Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht he supported the role of GMIT Letterfrack in fostering design awareness

and innovation in high quality furniture and I am sure he will be thrilled that his success has manifested itself in such a direct way in his inauguration. This is the second link GMIT Letterfrack has with Áras an Uachtaráin – in 2008 students designed, made and presented three lecterns to outgoing President Mary McAleese and these are used for all formal addresses given by the President in the Áras.“

CARRYING CREDITS• Progression from one year to the next will be stage-based, and progression with any failed credits outstanding is no longer allowed. Students must have completed all 60 credits in a stage in order to progress to the next stage, as well as any outstanding credits from previous years. A stage is the same as an academic year.

• Progression & Award Boards will, however, have the discretion to consider and assess the totality of a student’s performance.

COMPENSATION‘Pass by Compensation’ will now apply:

• If a student fails a module with a failing mark of 35 or greater, and they achieve ‘double the difference’ in another corresponding (equally weighted) module, they will then be allowed to ‘pass by compensation’ and their record will show 35p. ‘compensated’ and their mark brought up to a passing grade. (i.e. 40)

• For example, if a Business student received 36% in their Human Resource Management examination worth 5 credits, a deficit of 4%, and also 48% in their Integrated Marketing Communications exam worth 5 credits...As they have achieved ‘double the difference’ of 4% in their Marketing exam they are allowed ‘pass by compensation’. by receiving a mark at least 8% greater than the base passing mark of 40.

• Pass by compensation is only allowed when all modules for the stage have been attempted for the first time. It is used to allow the student pass the stage. o It is only considered for a maximum of 20 failed creditso The failing mark must be between 35 and 39 before it can be considered.o A student awarded a pass by compensation is not required to repeat the failed module(s).

In this case, the student will be seen to have passed the module and no repeat attempt will be necessary.

This will only apply when: It is the student’s first attempt at a module The failing mark is 35 or greater Being applied to a maximum of 20 credits in a stage

Page 13: Soup Volume IV Issue 2

It is also important to note that some modules may be deemed ineligible for compensation by individual Programme Boards, so students should ensure they are aware of the existence of any such modules. Students will be notified of any modules ineligible for compensation before Christmas.

AWARDSFor award-level students, first-attempt results will still only be considered in classifying awards. Compensation applies equally to award stage.

INTERNAL EXAMINERSInternal examiners are bound by the new Academic Code of Practice no.3 to: Assist in developing an indicative schedule for Continuous Assessment (CA). Provide CA results to students a minimum of one week before end-of-term exams. Be available by phone, e-mail or in person on consultation days to discuss both exam papers and pieces of CA.

There is also provision to: Allow for student appeals of CA marks. Hold information events for students on the significance of consultation days.

BORDERLINE/IMPAIRED PERFORMANCEThe Aegrotat Board, which previously dealt with students’ impaired performance in (or absence from) exams, due to circumstances other than the personal culpability of the student such as illness or bereavement, has now been abolished.

In the case of impaired performance, instead of an Aegrotat Form, students must now fill out a Personal Circumstances Form, which should then be submitted to their Head of Department no later than three days after the examination sitting, who will then deal with it on a confidential basis. Documentary evidence should be provided by the student along with this form.

Before examinations, if a student encounters a problem preventing him/her from taking an exam, he/she should complete an Examination Deferral Form and submit to their Head of Department.

REPEAT STUDENTSStudents who now register to repeat ‘exam-only’, i.e. who are not attending lectures, now have full access to IT facilities such as webmail and Moodle, and the Library.

A lady walks into Harrods. She looks around, spots a beautiful diamond bracelet and walks over to inspect it. As she bends over to look more closely, she unexpectedly farts.

Very embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone noticed her little woops and prays that a sales person was not anywhere near.

As she turns around, her worst nightmare materialises in the form of a salesman standing right behind her - Good looking as well.

Cool as a cucumber, he displays all of the qualities one would expect of a professional in a store like Harrods. He politely greets the lady with, ‘Good day, Madam. How may we helpyou today?

Blushing and uncomfortable, but still hoping that the salesman somehow missed her little ‘incident’, she asks, ‘what is the price ofthis lovely bracelet?’

He answers, “Madam - if you farted just looking at it - you’re going to shit yourself when I tell you the price!”

IN MEMORY OF BOB!!! Bob forgot his wedding anniversary.

His wife was mad. She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds. AND IT BETTER BE THERE!”

The next morning when his wife woke up she looked out the window to find a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.

She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Bob has been missing ever since.

An old golfer comes in from a round of golf at a new course and heads into the grill room. As he passes through the swinging doors he sees a sign hanging over the bar:

COLD BEER: $2.00HAMBURGER: $2.25CHEESEBURGER: $2.50CHICKEN: $3.50HAND JOB: $50.00

Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary payment, the old golfer walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractivefemale bartender who is serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled golfers. She glides down behind the bar to the old golfer.

“Yes?” she inquires with a wide, knowing smile, “May I help you?”

The old golfer leans over the bar and whispers, “I was wondering, young lady,” he whispers, “are you the one who gives the hand-jobs?”

She looks into his eyes with that wide smile and purrs: “Yes Sir , I sure am.”

The old golfer leans closer and into her left ear and says softly, “Well, wash your hands real good because I want a cheeseburger.”

This is the story of a blonde flying in a two- seater airplane with just the pilot.

He has a heart attack and dies. She frantically calls a May Day:

“May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! My pilot had a heart attack and is dead, and I don’t know how to fly. Help me! Please help me!”

All of a sudden she hears a voice over the radio saying: “This is the tower. I have received your message and I will talk you through it. I’ve had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just relax. Everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position.”

She says, “I’m 5’4” and I’m in the front seat.”

“O.K.” says the voice from the tower. “Repeat after me: Our Father. . . Who art in Heaven. . . ..”
