Rabbi’s corner:Shalom, Shir Tikvah-ites,

Have you ever wished for a “do-over?” If so, you might be pleased to hear that learning from our mistakes is one of the best things we can do to cultivate our leadership skills.

We learn this from the hero of several recent series of stories, Joseph. He’s the boy wonder whose father gave him a special coat of many colors, and whose special dreams foretold of one day being in a power position vis-à-vis his brothers. True to his star, he went from slave in an Egyptian prison to Viceroy of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh, which enabled him to save not only that nation, but his family from starvation and famine.

Although Jewish tradition upholds Joseph as a special kind of person—he is held to be a tzaddik—Righteous Person—he is actually not upheld as a great leader. That honor goes to Judah, one of Joseph’s older brothers, who emerges from the wings. Why is Judah’s leadership valued? One reason is because he is held to be the first person in Torah to admit making a mistake. Another is that he resolved to change himself and his life, so that he’d not repeat his mistakes again. One who achieves “perfect repentance,” teach our sages, encounters the same situation in which they had earlier sinned, but the second time around, do the right thing.

We see this in Judah who, many years earlier, was responsible for Joseph being sold as a slave. “Judah said to his brothers, ‘What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.’ His brothers agreed.” (Gen. .37:26). Judah went on to live a troubled life, filled with mistakes. Torah slyly introduces this by saying “Judah went down to Canaan…”, “going down” serving as code for moral decline. But Judah’s mistakes hurt him. Would he learn to act in a different way?

He got the opportunity to find out. In a moving scene, another beloved youngest brother, Benjamin, is found in Egypt, amidst his brothers, with the Viceroy’s silver cup. The Viceroy threatens Benjamin with slavery for the offense. An impassioned Judah steps forward, and implored the Viceroy, saying, “Let me stay as a slave; let my brother go free.” (Gen 44:33) Judah’s repentance is, therefore, “perfect.” Faced with the same circumstance as before—a younger brother at risk—he takes re-sponsibility for the outcome, and protects a brother from slavery. It is at this point that the Viceroy breaks down and, sobbing, reveals that his true identity is Joseph, the youngest brother sold into slavery and presumed dead. In fact, our very name is derived from that of Judah, for Judah’s Hebrew name is Yehudah, and we are Yehudim—Jews.

The lesson that Judah teaches us is that a leader is one who, though they may stumble and fall, arises more honest, humble, and courageous than they werebefore.

L’ivracha,

Congregation Shir Tikvah Shabbat Prayer Opportunites

At CST, every Shabbat contains a Friday night service. Saturday morning services are held at least once per month. Please check the calendar of services for exact service times each weekend or go online to www.shirtikvah.org/events.

Friday Night Services:6:15 p.m. Short and SweetDesigned for a more traditional Shabbat exerprience while still offering our unique Shir Tikvah spirituality. These services only last 45 minutes so that you can head home or out to eat for Shabbat dinner. They are pre-ceded by a “preneg;” a light snack to tide you over. There is no oneg following the service.

7:15 p.m. Music Shabbat Full of singing, dancing and Shabbat warmth, these services are informal, high-energy, and perfect for both adults and children. This service is followed by an “oneg” of coffee, refreshments and desserts.

7:45 p.m Traditional Service Geared towards adults (though open to chil-dren as well), this service contains moreliturgy than the other services and an in-depth sermon or Torah discussion. This service is followed by an “oneg” of coffee, refreshments and desserts.

PJ Tot Shabbat Service Our PJ Tot Shabbat service is a prayer expe-rience geared toward children 7 years old and younger and their families. Full of music, movement, and age-appropriate teaching, these services are scheduled throughout the year on varying Friday nights or Saturday mornings . Fridays begin at 6:15 p.m. and Sat-urdays at 10:00 a.m. and last approximately 30 minutes. Fun crafts and kid snacks follow the service.

Saturday Morning Service Sometimes these are led by our bar/bat mitzvah young adults, offering an incredible opportunity to see the in-depth training Shir Tikvah offers its Family Education students and the wonderful individuality that each 13-year old brings to prayer and Torah study. At other times, these services offer an intimate prayer experience, often led by lay-people, that contain all the warmth and spirituality that people come to expect from Shir Tikvah. This service is followed by an “oneg” of coffee, refreshments and desserts.

Shir Tikvah Volunteer Spot

We are who we are because of the tremendous willingness of our members to “roll up their sleeves” and lend a hand. Want to help? Here’s what we have this month:

- See above Tikkun Olam article for various soup making and other needs!

Tikkun Olam: Cooking for Song & SpiritWith winter approaching, please consider donating any gently used blankets, jackets, coats, scarves, hats, and gloves. The items can be dropped off in the baskets in the front vestibule as you enter Shir Tikvah We are also planning to do Birthday-in-a-box again this year and need your help. Items needed for each box include:

• cake mix • candles• napkins• a book• notepad• pen or pencil• one toy (wow factor)• and few party favor items• each box will cost around $10.00 to $15.00

We hope to complete the birthday in a box project sometime in March. We are collecting for this event as well. No small shoe boxes please. It needs to be wide enough to fit a cake mix & a book in the box . We would love some gently used books for this event as well. We will post the date soon.

Also, we are still making soup on a regular basis. We always need: rice, pasta, barley, and canned veggies. Even adding just one of these items each week to your grocery cart would be a tremendous help to us! We have a blue tub labeled in the kitchen for donations to be dropped off when you are in the building. If you’d prefer to coordinate a drop-off time, or if you have any questions, please contact Gail Said [email protected], 248-797-2702 or Karen Sage [email protected] 248-227-4697. Monetary donations will graciously be accepted with checks made out to “CST Sisterhood” with “Song and Spirit Soup” on the memo line.

If you’d like to help in the kitchen, the following dates are on the calendar this month for meal making at 10:30 a.m. in the mornings:

February 1February 6February 14February 28

For the month of February we are short of volunteers. Karen , Janice & Shei-la are out of out on vacation. Please consider helping us to make soup for the homeless. If you can help please contact Gail said 248-797-2702.

It has been very cold. If you have any gently used sleeping bag , blankets, coats, hats, scarves, gloves and socks we are collecting them in baskets by the front entrance.

Thank you to many who have already donated food items & coats/ blankets.

We really appreciate the support.

Oneg Duty for the 2016-2017 Membership Year In order to continue to keep the “Shir Tikvah” feel to our onegs, we ask members to volunteer for oneg duty at least once per membership year. Not only does having our members bring food and help set up and clean up create a more “hamish” feel, but it also allows for wonderful opportunities to get to know each another better! Please look for the oneg sign-up sheet in your mail box and return it to the CST office so the oneg committee can schedule your spot. You can also register online at shirtikvah.org under the “get involved” menu and click on “volunteer for an oneg.” Note: you must be logged in with your shirtikvah.org member login to be able to view the scheduling link!

February Tributes

Thoughts from our PresidentA few months ago, I was talking with Rabbi David Fine of URJ’s Rabbinic Transition Management Office. He asked me to name three special characteristics of Shir Tikvah. My reply? Our outstanding Family Ed program, our unique blend of Reform and Renewal, and our culture of inclusiveness. We should be particularly nurturing of this last trait. Inclusiveness is not just the fact that we welcome all regardless of age, sexual orientation or ethnicity. Although our services follow a somewhat set pattern, you can still maintain your personal religious or spiritual identity. Our Family Ed program accommodates special-needs students. And we will always find a way to accommodate your financial circumstances so you can be a member and your child can receive a Jewish education. Inclusiveness means we are all equal as members of our community. But it also carries an implied message that we will lift each other up when needed. Our lay service leaders, kitchen volunteers, shiva leaders and tradespeople help lift up those of us without these skills. And financially, in order to maintain our culture of inclusiveness, we need those of us who can, to financially support those who cannot. This is the core message of the CST Forever campaign. Maintaining our beautiful community, enhancing our offerings, attracting and retaining members - and ultimately to dream, to innovate, to build - requires us to improve our financial foundation. I am so pleased with the results of our recent Chanukah appeal, not just because we ex-ceeded our dollar goal, but because the number of congregants who participated was forty percent greater than last year. Involvement in all our activities, including fundraising, helps to strengthen your ties to the Shir Tikvah community. As you look through the CST Forever literature, please know that every heartfelt pledge, regardless of size, is deeply appreciated. A pledge which is meaningful to you, is meaningful to Shir Tikvah.

Family Ed Happenings:Shalom,

The past few months have left many in our community with feelings of fear and sadness, while at the same time offering others among us a sense of great hope.

As parents, grandparents, educators, and leaders in our community we must ask ourselves, what happens next? While we can be content to watch the news, cheering from the sidelines or wringing our hands, we must make the often uncomfortable decision to act. How you choose to act is an intensely personal choice and not one that I would presume to force up anyone.

If you are a politically involved person by nature, there are vast resources available to help you reach out to elected officials. Write to your local state or federal representatives. Email, make phone calls, schedule appointments, what-ever is most comfortable for you. Attend city council or school board meetings. Read newspapers from credible news outlets. Keep informed!

And if you need a break from politics, keep busy helping others. Turn to your Shir Tikvah community for ideas. Reach out to me and I will show you how you and your family can make a difference. To get you started here are some examples:

• Honor the spirit of our beloved Michael Philips Z”L and help to ease the suffering of those going hungry in our community. Pick up items next time you’re at the grocery for the group making soup weekly for Song & Spirit, donate to a food pantry like Gleaners or Yad Ezra, check the shul calendar and come make soup!

• Join us on Tikkun Olam Day 2017, April 22 at Shir Tikvah. Tikkun Olam, Earth Day and Havdallah!

• Sign up to volunteer at a community garden, Jewish Senior Life, any of the programs through JFS, etc. Check out http://ivolunteerjewishdetroit.org/ at Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit’s I Volunteer site for more examples!

• Come to Shir Tikvah and help with Tikkun Olam Day, the Purim Carnival, Religious Rituals, or any other groups working hard to help our community thrive.

I can’t wait to see you here!

B’shalom,

Sisterhood SpeaksIt’s mid-winter in Michigan! Can spring be far behind? Well, maybe we shouldn’t answer that one. In the meantime, I hope you’re enjoying the longer days, and the cozy warmth of your home.

Just in time to chase the chill away, Sisterhood hosted our 2nd Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Bingo Night on January 26th. Thanks again to our illustrious caller Fred Silverman, for keep-ing us laughing and entertained. It was a great time with good friends, wonderful food and fun prizes. Who could want more on a cold Winter night? Hope you didn’t miss it.

Looking forward, plan to join us on Sunday, February 26, 2017 for our Sisterhood Sunday Event during Family Ed. We will be holding our 2nd moderated discussion/Pinterest Live centered on the theme of “How does your family include children and grandchildren in Purim and Pesach celebrations?” I’m really looking forward to enhancing the Seder experience for the youngsters in our family and can’t wait to hear your ideas. Coffee and snacks will be served. Please RSVP if you can to [email protected] if possible, but if you don’t get a chance to RSVP, just come. We want you and welcome you.

With winter in full swing our Tikkun Olam projects continue to be a very high priority. Wheth-er you’d like to contribute shelf stable food items, or gently used winter jackets, coats, hats and gloves or blankets, anything would be greatly appreciated. There’s a bin in the CST vestibule for clothes and blankets, and there’s a blue bin in the kitchen marked CST Sisterhood, Song and Spirit for food.

Also any items you’d like to add to our “Birthday in a Box” would be just perfect. A collection box and information is in our vestibule. This is an opportunity for you to help a local child in need who might otherwise have no birthday celebration at all.

If you have any questions about either Soup for Song and Spirit or Birthday in a Box, or if you would like to participate further, please contact Gail Said at [email protected] 248 979-2702 or Karen Sage [email protected] 248-227-4697.

Looking forward to seeing your soon,

B’shalom,

Sheila Henkle
