Commodore’s ReportBy Danny Pearsall “Canaipa”

By time you receive this edition of Soundings, the financial year will be over and the AGM will be upon us. I will give you a short breakdown of events over the past 12 months and what is in stall for over the next few months.

The year in Review:-The 35th Manly Hotel St. Helena Cup weekend in 2011 was a great weekend, perfect weather, 107 entrants and many spectators enjoyed two days of sailing at its best.

We welcomed Fred Cramer as our new webmaster. Fred has got the new web page up and running. The Web page is very impressive. There is a sailing section, Marina & Dragon Boat section and also a Cruising section. Fred is constantly keeping the web site up to date with events and racing reports.

We have a volunteer for grounds chair; Geoff Rudd has come forward to help. Geoff is no newcomer to this position, having fulfilled the role some 12 years ago. Thank you Geoff for putting up your hand.

In July 2012 we have the Ladies Skipper race; a great day and this year it has been organised by two very professional people; Sharon Boyle and Alexis McCathy. They have been successful in obtaining sponsorship from the Manly Hotel, Nautilus Marine and the Red Kite Origination. There is a sailing shirt available for purchase with our Sponsor & Club logos and with the 50 year badge printed onto it. This souvenir is a “must purchase” for all members. Thanks Ladies for all your efforts.

This is the Club’s 50th Anniversary and it is going to be a big one for members, past members, the committee and subcommittees. We have lots of plans for celebrating this year in both sailing and

social events Ladies Skipper, Christmas in July, Former Commodores and member dinner in August and an open day. A lot of history has been collected and sorted and been put into a history book. The Book is about to go to print and this is being handled by Peter Auld. Des Clement is organising the Open Day in August.

We have also gained a volunteer for Sailing Chairman. I want to thank Greg Doolan for volunteering for this role. Greg has already started organising the St. Helena Cup. The St. Helena is a big weekend and takes approximately 4 to 5 months to organise – please think about offering your assistance to Greg for this event.

The main office is currently under renovation. We are enlarging the main office and putting in a sliding door which will face the car park. There will also be a new counter and two desks in the office area. The Sailing office will also get a makeover with new furniture and fixtures. We are hoping to get a more professional look to the office. Karen will be relocating into the Club House for a few weeks. Rear Commodore Stewart Hamilton is running the project plus putting a lot of his own personal time and sweat in to it - thanks Stewart.

The next project is replacing the fuse box at the storage shed near the boat ramp and also replacing the power points along the hardstand on the Club fence.

And finally in very exciting news the Manly Dragon Boat section is heading to Hong Kong to compete in the World Championships. The Committee and members of the WMYC wish them all the best in this competition. Have a safe journey and we will be thinking of you.

Keep those burgesses flying, see you on the water.

Besides the management committee and marina board who are all volunteers, we have a small band of “special” volunteers within our Club, without whom we would struggle.

Without mentioning names we would like to recognise these people and let them know that they are all appreciated. Their valuable time and assistance is never faltering. They are there whenever we call. They go beyond the call of duty and give us their complete attention.

3 Cheers to you all with a huge Thank You. We truly appreciate your help.

Sailing Chairman’s ReportBy acting Chairman Greg Doolan ‘Phoenix Star’

Since Andrew’s report in the last edition of soundings I think it is fair to say the score is weather 1, sailors nil. The last weeks have only had small parcels of respite from unpleasant maritime conditions.

The combined series has progressed with the completion of the Shorncliff and return weekend pair of races which were held in variable conditions. The yearly QCYC vintage and veteran’s regatta was held as usual on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and we thank “Tom Thumb”, “Balamara” and "Carouse" for carrying the flag for WMYC. Particular thanks to Paul for his report on page 24 of this edition of Soundings.

Our SAGS group is having the usual winter quiet time with the fleet reduced to the very keen or very mad depending on your perspective. I am confident that our numbers will return to strength as the solstice passes. In other SAGS news Nautilus Marine has offered to support the SAGS fleet and we are negotiating the detail with the broad intent of having a sponsored Sunday in September.

While the presses are preparing this edition the “Australiawide short-handed and single-handed series” will have commenced. I would like to thank Euan and Detlef for their support and to acknowledge the efforts of Peter Miller “Exile” who has been the event coordinator for the series. Two days out from racing we have 7 single-handed and 11 short-handed entries.

July brings with it the much anticipated Nautilus Marine Lady Skippers’ Race. We are supporting the charity Redkite this year. “Redkite provides real and practical support to children and young people with cancer and their families. Support is provided from the moment of diagnosis, through treatment, and on return home to the community”. For more information, visit www.redkite.org.au .

Sharon and Alexis are doing great work as event coordinators for this day and I cannot emphasize enough how much the Club appreciates all the

work done by the members whose volunteer efforts allow us to share so much pleasure in the Club’s sailing calendar. Please mark off the 22nd of July as a must attend Club day and check all the details on the Club website. The solid support of Nautilus Marine who sponsor the race is greatly valued. The evening of the 12th of July also deserves a diary note as that evening will see the Lady’s Skippers pre-race information evening held at the Club. For any additional information please consult the Club website. Sharon can be contacted on 0411645695 and Alexis on 0417143430.

Lady’s Skippers event is run as an inclusive fun event and has a successful track record being just that. Additionally it does have two serious elements. It generates practical financial support for a community charity and it fosters the participation of women in sailing. The sailing committee is very proud of the success the event has had in achieving both its social and serious aims.

The sailing committee hopes to have available a badged 50th anniversary Club sailing shirt soon. These shirts will be embossed with specific event names and it will possible for individual boat and or crew names to added. We are working to have the shirts available in time for Lady’s Skippers. Be on the watch for Club and email notices as these shirts will be stylish, functional and good value.

Planning for the St. Helena Cup has started and there will be an almost endless capacity for that event to absorb the generous volunteerism of our Club. Please consider giving even a little time to our major annual event. I will keep in touch about the many opportunities for volunteer help.

Lastly the committee would like to thanks Andrew Barney for his work as Chairman and we trust he and his family are enjoying the West. I have offered my service as acting chairman until our AGM and will offer to continue in the role next Club year.

Safe sailing and I hope to see you on the water.

Marina Media

By Pamela Pavey - Marina Manager for Marina Board• We probably should not have sounded so complacent about the weather in the last

issue. Since then, we have experienced so much rain (in some places 120 mm. in 6 hours) that webbed feet would have been handy. All our gardens and birds, however have a different point of view.

• ‘Celebrate’ -the ‘In Word’ for our Club 50 years Functions - So much preparation going on with the Club for this event and various rumours abound – will there be a VERY Special Yacht Race? – who would like a ‘dress-up’ Party Night? Will some ‘Celebrity’ turn up for a Champagne Breakfast? Anyone with a “Terrific Idea” for member participation, please give us a ring or drop a note in the Marina post box (left side, on the wall as you enter the Marina Office). We're looking for some inspiration.

• The Marina is considering a Special Competition regarding the walkways, so stay tuned whilst we fine-tune this idea as well as another one concerning our younger crews. More details at our meetings or the next ‘Soundings’.

• OUR MAJOR MAINTENANCE is winding down (almost) with only one Row – J – to be renovated now. We thank all the berth-users for their cooperation in moving out and back to various berths whilst the work was done. The rainy periods did not help us at all but it should all be finished in July. Our plan, hatched years ago, has finally come to fruition. Thanks to our Board Members over the last few years for continuing to support this work.

• Nautilus Marine Lady Skippers Race coming up again and this time Sharon Boyle and Alexis McCarthy are at the helm for the planning and running. In addition, our Damian Pugh of Nautilus Marine has come on-board as the Sponsor – Thanks again Damian for your participation in our major races.

• The seats at the top of each walkway are being modified to make them more comfortable and we will also be repainting them very shortly.

• SLIPWAY - Mick Franklin has been handling the Slipmaster position recently and more members are making his acquaintance. We are fortunate to have a second slipmaster to call on now, as Tom is not available for a short time. It is amazing with all the rain, but most of our skippers have been able to finish their work as it seldom rains ALL day.

Safe Mooring, Safe Boating- & Fun Days Coming Up

Since I last reported, several areas, mainly in the sailing division, have been further improved on our Club Website.

Under the direction of the Lady Skipper’s committee, the pages for the Lady Skipper’s race have been substantially enhanced with new up to date information, pictures and artwork.

A dedicated page for the new crew register has been created but as to date, nobody has contacted the WMYC office yet to put their name down. So, if you want to get out sailing, call our office at 3393 5708 to submit your details.

The SAGS page now shows the top five boats of the last race as well as the YTD scores for the first five boats. Subject to the timely submission of the data, latest results will be updated every week.

The race registration facility is working very well and is being used a great deal more than last year. People can also request a report that shows who else registered. The software has an option that allows payment through PayPal. We haven’t used this facility as such yet and plan to make online payments available in the near future.

Keep checking our web site as we have some big events coming like the Nautilus Marine Lady Skipper’s race, the Manly Hotel St. Helena Cup and the Club’s 50th Anniversary.

The Lady Skippers' Race at WMYC is one of the Club's signature events each year and, as far as we know, one of the largest women's sailing events we can find in Australia. The inaugural Ladies Skippers' Race was held on 15 June 1975 "to encourage lady participation and an incentive to steer the yacht." Now in its 37th year WMYC is proud to be part of an event that increases in popularity and prestige every year.

The event has always attracted generous sponsors and their generosity is very much appreciated. In 2012 we are fortunate to have Nautilus Marine as our major sponsor with Damian Pugh as our contact.

Our event also supports a charity and in 2012 we are proudly supporting RedKite, who care for children and their families with childhood cancer. Fund raising for RedKite will be undertaken through boat entry fee ($40 from each entry), raffles after the race, BBQ after the race, entry to the Pre-race Briefing, sales of sailing shirts, bubbly sales on race day as well as an opportunity to donate directly on-line via the Lady Skippers web page on the WMYC website.

This year we have added a Pre-race Briefing for all skippers and crew (men and women). Entry is $10 and covers light snacks and a glass of bubbly with the balance being donated to our charity, RedKite. We will also have representatives from Redkite to tell us a little more about the charity and what our donations will cover.

This event is about building confidence, improving sailing knowledge and skills whilst ensuring you have fun on the water. We have organised some very talented women to talk to us about a range of topics including:

• Expectations of a race organiser from Louise Davis, who is a national level race official

• Tips concerning race starts and windward legs from seasoned yachties - Sally Turner (Alien Biopsy) and Lynley Vinton (Scallywag)

• Brush up on the key rules to keep everyone safe and happy - Kate Fyson who is an experienced sailing instructor

NOTE: Nautilus Marine Lady Skippers Race sailing shirts will be on sale at this event.

Sunday 22 July 2012, WMYC

The 2012 Nautilus Marine Lady Skippers Race will kick-off from 8:30am with sign-on. The coffee van will be on hand and activities for race day include:

Olympic Team Form Guide

With the London 2012 Olympic Games just around the corner it is time to assess Australia’s chances for gold, silver and bronze. It all comes down to this. Thousands of hours of training, hundreds of races, leaving no stone unturned in the relentless pursuit of perfection, all for that one shot at Olympic gold.Between July 29 and August 11 the eyes of the sailing world will focus on Weymouth, with 380 sailors from more than 50 countries set to compete for gold across 10 Olympic sailing events.470 MENThe 470 is a two-person dinghy that will be raced by both men and women at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The 470 has a single trapeze, spinnaker and weighs 120kg, having first been used at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games and then featuring as the first women’s Olympic class in 1988.Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page will represent the country at London 2012, with the event to be Matthew's first Olympics and Malcolm’s third. The pair are currently world number one and have won the past two 470 World Championships and Malcolm is the most successful 470 sailor in history. They have won every 470 trophy possible and rightly will be one of the teams to beat this year. The competition will be tough with the pair having not won yet on Olympic waters. French duo Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos have been the team to beat in recent years, with Belcher and Page finishing second to the French in three of the four regattas they have contested in Weymouth.

470 WOMENJust like the 470 men, the 470 women’s class is wide open, with numerous crews in a position to get on the podium.Australians Elise Rechichi and Belinda Stowell are campaigning to represent Australia in the class with the pair only teaming up together in October 2011. They tasted instant success with a victory in their first regatta, Sail Melbourne, backing it up with a ninth place finish on home waters at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships and a fourth at the World Cup in Palma.RS:X MENThe RS:X windsurfer made its debut at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and will be raced by both men and women this year. The men’s class is hotly contested with nothing separating the top crew. Australia has qualified for an entry to the Games and three athletes are actively campaigning to represent – Luke Baillie, Patrick Vos and James Levy.RS:X WOMENAustralia’s Jessica Crisp will compete at her fourth straight Olympic Games this year as she works towards winning the Olympic medal that has eluded her so far. Crisp will face tough competition in her quest for that medal with the RS:X women’s class incredibly competitive.

49ERThe 49er is an Australian designed, two-person, high performance skiff, which debuted at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen have had great success at the Olympic venue, winning all four regattas they have contested there. They have won two of the last three 49er World Championships, with Outteridge also representing Australia at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, finishing fifth following ‘that’ medal race capsize with the final finish line in sight. Working closely with coach Emmett Lazich, this team have been meticulous in their preparation.Though the pair will have a fight on their hands for gold this August with a number of strong challengers for the top step of the podium. Right up there will be Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez of Spain who will step off the Volvo Ocean Race entry Telefonica and straight back into the 49er. The last time Outteridge and Jensen raced against Martinez and Fernandez was at the Olympic test event and the result couldn’t have been any closer, the two crews were tied on points after 16 races with the Australians winning on a count back after finishing higher in the medal race. The Spanish won Silver at Beijing 2008 and Gold at Athens 2004 and have proven countless times before that even with limited time in the boat before a regatta they will be right up there. STARThe Star is the oldest class at the Olympic Games, having been designed in 1910 and a part of the Olympics since 1932. The two-person keelboat does not use a spinnaker and will compete at its last Games in London, having been dropped from the program for Rio 2016. Australia has not yet qualified for a place in the Olympic Games Star fleet but Paul McKenzie and Phil Toth continue to campaign to qualify to the country and for subsequent nomination. FINNThe Finn is a men’s single-handed dinghy, which requires great strength and athleticism to sail and has been contested at every Olympic Games since 1952.Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie is the favourite to win his third Finn gold medal at London 2012, adding to his already impressive record. Ainslie has dominated on the water in recent years, winning the Olympic test event last August by a massive 31 points, and having one hand on the trophy at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships before being disqualified on the penultimate day and missing the medal race.

LASERThe Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world with more than 250,000 boats in circulation. The boat is robust, simple to rig and sail and features close, tactical racing. The class first appeared at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.Tom Slingsby heads into his second Olympic Games having learnt a lot from the disappointment of finishing 23rd at Beijing 2008. Since then, under Olympic medalist and former rival Michael Blackburn as coach, Slingsby has regained his world number one position, won his third and fourth World Championships in 2010 and 2011 and was named the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. Beijing 2008 gold medalist Paul Goodison of Great Britain will go toe-to-toe with Slingsby in Weymouth with the pair having had some great battles in the pastLASER RADIALThe Laser Radial class utilises the same hull as the Laser class, with a smaller sail used for the women’s class. Australia’s Krystal Weir is campaigning to compete at her second Games, having represented the country in the three-person Yngling class in 2008. WOMEN'S MATCH RACINGWomen’s Match Racing will make its debut at the London 2012 Olympic Games with racing taking place in identical Elliott 6 metre keelboats. Women’s Match Racing is different than the other nine Olympic classes with crews going head-to-head in a round robin two-boat match racing format rather than the traditional fleet racing. Since the class became a part of the Olympic circuit in 2009 the competition has stepped up a level at every regatta, with crews pushing each other to the limits.

FOLLOWING THE ACTIONThe London 2012 Olympic Games will be broadcast in Australia on Channel 9 and Foxsports. Foxsports will feature two races a day from Weymouth, along with all 10 medal races. News from the Australian Olympic Committee can be found at: www.london2012.olympics.com.au and for all the information on Australia’s sailors head to: www.australiansailingteam.com.au

If you can't go sailing because of the winter weather, the next best option is to curl up in a comfortable chair with a good book. Here is one that the editor recommends.

Solitaire Spirit - Three times around the world single-handed, By Les Powles

When I first started reading this book, which opens with Les Powles attempting an Atlantic crossing in a woefully under-equipped, home-made boat and with less than eight hours sailing experience, I thought it was the work of a madman. By the end I still questioned Les’s sanity, but had developed an enormous respect for the man’s courage, ingenuity and seamanship. And I had thoroughly enjoyed the story. The Yachting Journalists Association awarded him the 1981 Yachtsman of the Year title and the Ocean Cruising Club presented him with its prestigious Award of Merit for his second and third circumnavigations,

both under-funded and under-provisioned and both of which nearly cost him his life.

In many ways, this is a handbook for those dreamers who want to set out and live the cruising lifestyle on a shoe-string, showing them the pitfalls, the ways to make ends meet and the ways to be accepted and helped along the way. If so, I hope they will also take onboard Les’s strong message, and the cause of a bitterly-fought battle with New Zealand bureaucracy, that if you go out there alone you do so at your own risk, and shouldn’t expect others to risk their lives to rescue you from your folly.

The descriptions of knock-downs in hurricane-force winds, of near starvation when provisions ran

out, of navigation gone awry and of the delights of human company when a single-hander finally makes it home will excite and enthrall you. This should be in every cruiser’s bookshelf.

VHF Radio Etiquetteby Mark Gordon

I was recently chatting to a seasoned sailor, and active member of the Club, who upon being asked how he enjoyed his recent weekend cruise around Moreton Bay, proceeded to detail his annoyance with fellow sailors use of the radio's. I thought that it would be a good idea to write a quick article about the safe, approved and yes, appropriate use of your vessel's radio. If we all observe the following guidelines and protocols, then the airwaves will remain clear and available for their proper purpose.

Very high frequency (“VHF”) marine radio in Australia is considered an effective broadcast communication tool up to 20 nautical miles offshore. It can be used to obtain weather information, hail other vessels, and report emergencies. It is a line of sight radio technology, in that the signal does not typically propagate beyond visual distance from the antenna.

Every channel on VHF marine radio has a specific purpose. Channel 16 is for hailing and distress messaging only. It should be monitored all the times while underway in order to assist in emergency situations, to hear weather alerts, warnings of hazards, restrictions to navigation and to hear another vessel hailing you.

Channel 16 should never be used for casual conversation or radio checks.Obscene or objectionable language, transmission of music and subversive transmissions are forbidden. VHF radios should not be used on full power unless necessary.

HAILING ANOTHER VESSEL OR HOME STATION

To hail another vessel or home station, simply call the name of the vessel or home station three times, followed by your own vessel’s name. Wait for a response then immediately switch to a designated working channel. For example, depress the microphone key and say,

"Reliance, Reliance, Reliance"This is Fast Boat"

The response is likely to be:

"Fast Boat this is Reliance""Over"

The term “over” informs the listener you have finished transmitting. Then your response may be:

"Reliance, this is Fast Boat""Switch to channel 73"

to which Reliance will respond

"Reliance switching to channel 73"

On channel 73 the communication can continue to address the matter.

Many yacht clubs have designated working channels such as channel 71 or channel 73 and calls between vessels and the home station can be initiated on those channels without the need to switch.

VHF radio is a working radio and is not intended for general conversation. For general conversation, use a mobile phone.

Mayday, Pan Pan and Securité

The MAYDAY call is only for situations in which life or property is in immediate danger. This call takes priority over all other calls. For example, in a channel without any means of propulsion and a ship is approaching or without an anchor and the vessel is about to be washed onto rocks. It is not for calling for help if you’ve run out of fuel, unless you are in imminent danger. On channel 16 call:

MAYDAY, MAYDAY MAYDAY, this is Fast Boat, Fast Boat, Fast BoatMAYDAY, my position is [latitude, longitude, bearing to a well known landmark]I am [state problem such as, on fire, sinking]I require immediate assistanceI have [number of] people on boardI am [description of boat][Any other information e.g. I am abandoning to life rafts]

Over.

Page 21: Soundings July - August 2012

SoundingsWynnum Manly Yacht Club Inc.

In moderate threat situations use the PAN PAN call, such as if you are grounded and believe you may be taking water on slowly or have no means of propulsion. This overrides all but a MAYDAY call:PAN PAN, PAN PAN, PAN PANAll stations, all stations, all stationsThis is Fast Boat, Fast Boat, Fast BoatMy position is [latitude, longitude, bearing to a well known landmark]I am [type of urgency, e.g. drifting without power in a shipping lane]I require [type of assistance required][Any other information e.g. size of vessel, which may be important for towing]

Over

In least threatening situations, use the SECURITÉ call such as when you are towing another vessel and have restricted maneuverability and want other vessels to avoid you or to let other vessels know that there is a potential issue. This call is normally broadcast on channel 16 for maritime VHF and then moved onto a working channel to

deliver the message:SECURITÉ, SECURITÉ, SECURITÉAll stations, all stations, all stationsThis is Fast Boat, Fast Boat, Fast BoatFor urgent navigational warning, listen on channel six-seven

Out[Then on channel 67]SECURITÉ, SECURITÉ, SECURITÉAll stations, all stations, all stationsThis is Fast Boat, Fast Boat, Fast Boat[Describe issue, e.g. floating debris sighted and locationConsidered a danger to surface navigation]

Out

With these simple rules in place the water will be a safer, and yes, less irritating place to be.

Safe Sailing.

BOAT RAMP ETIQUETTE Article by Mark Gordon

By Greg Doolan 'Phoenix Star'

Vintage Yacht Regatta

After John Richardson from Balamara sang the praises of last year’s Vintage Yacht Regatta (VYR) I made sure that Tom Thumb and I were there this year. I wasn’t disappointed. The QCYC hosts the VYR each Queens Birthday long weekend and this year 33 yachts and their crews enjoyed 4 races over the weekend. There was a shared passion for classic boats and great camaraderie on and off the water. Big boats were split into pre 1968 Classics (13 boats) and Modern Classics (4 boats), and 16 small boats raced in a single division.

On each of the two racedays there was a triangle course and a windward/leeward course. These courses were quite short but the boats went around 3 times. All boats used the same start/finish line but with the large fleet the bigger boats started 5 minutes earlier and the smaller boats used closer marks for shorter legs.

The use of different course lengths within the same relatively small race area kept the fleet together and added to the atmosphere. Boats were close enough for plenty of upwind crosses and action around the marks. The weather was great for racing with 12 to 15 knots both days which generally suited the older, heavier boats quite well. Although there were only glimpses of sun at least the rain kept away.

It was interesting to see how the handicapping brought boats with very different performances quite close together on the scoreboard. We found a few boats with similar speed to us on the water and it was great being close to them all the way round. So different to SAGS where Tom Thumb spends so much time alone.

There was another big difference to SAGS, where there might only be 3 or 4 legs over 2 or 3 hours. VYR course legs only lasted 5 to 10 minutes and it seemed that no sooner had we got the spinnaker pole up than it was time to take it down again. We hardly had time to get our breath, but it was very exciting. Boy were we tired at the end of each day. Several boats used spinnakers and with the short legs there was a lot of pressure to set and douse these quickly. Not an easy task with inexperienced crews, so it was a great spectacle for the small spectator fleet which included an old life boat (steam powered I think). Reg and I were too busy working Tom Thumb to beat Tern, a Nordic Folk Boat and closest to us in boat speed, to watch much of the action.

Carmen Mira, the young skipper of Tern remarked to me that some of these boats are “achingly beautiful”. And she was right, many of the boats were truly gorgeous with a few of the highlights for me being Achernar II, an Alden Ketch, Pagan, a Tasman Seabird and previous Brisbane to Gladstone race winner and of course WMYC’s Balamara. Many of the skippers went to a lot of trouble to show their boats off to the best advantage. But this can mean different things to different skippers. For example my efforts in the final week focused on getting Tom Thumb to go faster and point higher (new antifoul, fitting a folding propeller and enlarging and fairing the prop aperture) while the owner of the boat on the hard next to us, Russ Daniels and his gaff cutter, Crackerjack, spent the week cleaning, painting, varnishing and polishing her till she shone. Russ bought Crackerjack as a hulk about to be burnt to recover the lead in her keel and spent 8 years rebuilding her. He did a fabulous job with her internal fit out just as impressive as her exterior.

One extraordinary feat was performed by Alby Jeays and two friends sailing Fiona, a small gaff rigged sailing skiff. A fitting on the mast failed and the boat capsized. The rescue boat raced over to assist but was waved away by her adamant crew who righted the boat, climbed in, bailed her out and jury rigged the sails to get back to the club on their own. The amazing bit – the crew had a combined age over 250 years – Alby is 92 and the other crew in their 80’s. I am in awe of these guys – they are my role models.

This is a great weekend and not just for old gaffers. There was a Duncanson, a Cavalier and a Clansman. So if your boat was designed or built before 1983 come along next year for close quarter sailing with “achingly beautiful’ boats and great festivities. But note that the Queens Birthday weekend might move to October next year and if it does the QCYC will move the VYR. Stay tuned.

All Over Boat Cleaner

All-Over Boat Cleaner from Ensearch is said to be the answer to removing atmospheric pollution, fuel spillage, exhaust stains, bird mess, shoe scuff marks and a host of other dirt and stains from all types of boats.

All-Over Boat Cleaner works effortlessly on all exterior surfaces, gelcoat or painted, varnished or bare wood, to lift out the dirt leaving the boat shiny. Its low viscosity means it is great for getting the dirt out of difficult areas like non-slip surfaces and around stanchion bases, and removing black marks on hulls from tenders and inflatables.

The secret of All-Over Boat Cleaner’s effectiveness lies behind a complex synergistic blend of six active ingredients which enable the product to remove all types of dirt unlike less chemically engineered products.

Supplied in concentrated form which can be diluted with water, the cleaner is applied with a soft brush, left for a minutes and then simply brush/washed off. One bottle is said to easily cover a 40 foot yacht including using undiluted cleaner on some tough marks.

Foundation & Life Member: Vince Hayes

Member Profile

Vince Hayes joined Wynnum Manly Yacht Club in 1971 after moving to Brisbane from Townsville. His early history is best described in extracts from a letter to the Editor published in the March 1986 edition of Soundings:

“My memory takes me back to members who were instrumental in getting me (a newly arrived novice sailor from Townsville with a Thunderbird) into the WMYC. As a family man their appeal to come and join the family man’s club was too strong to resist. We will always remember the Christmas Parties and picnics which were a feature of the earlier days. In 1968 the membership was around 30 or 40 and there were occasional “big fleet” races with about 16 boats!

In those days we used to hold meetings in the Manly Service Station, under RQ Clubhouse, at the Manly Hotel or just wherever. I recall one year having urgent consultations with the Commodore about quickly moving the Club’s entire savings (totaling $1,250) to the bank when we feared a “run” on Building Societies.

Later came the push for our own piece of ground with the years of frustrating negotiations with Government Departments.”

The district often became disappointed and irate with WMYC for its apparent “slow progress”, but for a totally voluntary organization, remarkable progress was made.

The Marina Project now must be the greatest public monument to what a few dedicated club individuals can achieve.

With his yacht Waimana he joined the 21 strong yacht racing fleet on the Club’s register in August 1971.

Vince joined the club at the same time as Jim Hayes (no relation to Vince) and a fleet of eleven Fourteen Footers from Oxley. It

was a time when the WMYC fleet began to show a depth of character which would lead to an era of racing in earnest in the next few years. There was a mixture of old timers like Stan Davey (Revelation), seven newcomers in 1969 like Sir Ellis Murphy and Dudley Young, and eight new members in 1971-a total of 21 boats on the register and the 11 Fourteens.

Joining the club at this landmark time in the Club’s history gave Vince a great opportunity to develop his sailing skills. His wife Helen had sailed VJ Dinghies on Lake Illawarra, NSW and she recalls teaching him how to sail. While acknowledging his wife’s contribution, Vince also remembers appreciating the help and support given to him by Dudley Young in his early days at the club .

In July 1971 no less than 14 new members made application to join the Club largely as a result of a recent initiative to construct Club Facilities at Manly Boat Harbour where land was available and the Building Sub Committee’s proposal was to be discussed at the next General Meeting. It was into this environment that Vince soon found himself actively involved in the pioneering days of the Club’s development.

Vince joined the Committee in 1972 as Rear Commodore and served on the Sailing Committee with Dudley Young and Dick Wilson. When elected Commodore in 1973, Vince undertook an unparalleled marathon term of 5 years in the position. In that time the club progressed from a relatively small group, to the lively ever growing concern

Page 29: Soundings July - August 2012

SoundingsWynnum Manly Yacht Club Inc.

it became by 1978 at which time Vince handed over the reins to Commodore David Morwood. In paying tribute to the work Vince Hayes had done for the Club, David said: “The growth has been mainly due to Vince’s enthusiasm, energy and a capacity to get people to do things”.

In his 5 years at the helm Vince can lay claim to some very fine achievements, but none more important than securing the land for the Clubhouse site in October 1975 after several different approaches to the Department of Harbours and Marine over a period of 13 years. Other successes came in September 1976 with the debut of the Club’s prestigious St Helena Cup race weekend, and in November 1976 the commencement of the Club’s Moreton Bay Single Handed Championship, both events being open to all Clubs and all boats.

In 1973 Waimana was sold to Paul Lapraik. Vince’s next boat Waikoru was built in Cairns. After fitting out the new Lidgard half tonner, he was back in the water and racing Waikoru by September 1974. Waikoru was a regular entry in subsequent races and social activities and achieved success by winning the Division I Seasons Points in 1979 and the Spring Series Points in 1983. Vince and his two mates Moss Pollak and Fritz Kasper cruised Waikoru up the Queensland coast in 1982.

After a brief break from committee work Vince accepted Chairmanship of the 1979/80 Building Committee and Grounds Committee in 1981 with Des Clements, which culminated in the volunteer effort towards building the Clubhouse in late 1981. Vince and Harry Hollis with their offsiders took care of the electrical wiring. It was at this point that Vince then undertook a second significant period of service for the Club, this time on the Marina Committee. His signature together with those of Stan Davey, Norm Richards, Peter Heathwood, Les Clements, Bill Haslet and Alan Gunn (now known as the magnificent seven) are found on the original request for a Special General Meeting held 15th December 1981 to consider building a marina.

The marina project was another marathon effort of project design, getting Government approvals, arranging finance and then selling berths to members. This was the work of the Marina Committee over the next 5 years and it is to Vince’s credit that he remained deeply involved in all aspects until the Marina Company took over in 1987. In that time Vince also served as Social Committee Chairman in 1983/85, during which his wife Helen served on the Ladies Committee and contributed immensely with activities. Her fashion parades will be remembered by many.

Vince returned to the Club Committee as Rear Commodore in 1985. For his years of magnificent service to the Club, he was honoured with Life Membership at the AGM in 1985.

Waikoru was sold in 1986 and the new boat Hay Seed, an Adams 13 was ordered. She was built in 1987, fitted out by Vince and registered in 1988. She joined the Division I racing fleet in 1990. Vince continued racing competitively until 1997, with wins in the 1993 and 1994 short handed races and in 1994, the Wynnum Manly Cup. Haye Seed was last registered on the club’s books in 2001.

In 1990, 100 years after the St Helena Cup was won by Mick Patterson’s grandfather for a rifle shooting competition on St. Helena Island, the winning yacht racing team was

Vince Hayes (Hayeseed), Peter Heathwood (Saewen) and Bill Haslet (Karunda) – a fitting reward for a member who joined the club nineteen years before, as a “novice sailor”.

Manly Dragons

Well, what a season for Manly Dragon Boat Club – hitting 100 members.

In the month of May, Manly Dragon Boat Club held a Club Development Day with guest speaker, Graeme McCutcheon, and saw 30 members in attendance. This was a productive day for the Club's future and planning the next 5 years. Graeme McCutcheon will be returning in September to do a Development Day with the new Committee Members for the 2012/2013 season and to talk about our future growth and goals.

Since returning from the National Titles in April, 29 members have been training extremely hard. As we are now in our off season with little competition happening, these 29 members have been committed to 4 on water sessions a week plus individual off water training. These members are off to Hong Kong 8th Club Crew Championship. The teams which will be competing are Masters Women, Grand Masters Women, Grand Masters Mixed and Grand Masters Open. This event will be held from the 4th – 8th July. We wish our teams all the very best for the first time ever in representing the Club internationally.

It is a great achievement for our Junior Paddlers, Alyssa Banfield and Danah Ferrari, who have been named to go to the next Australian Junior Camp.

Our season launch will be held on 28 July, and will give members the opportunity to catch up and chat with the Hong Kong Paddlers and hear with their stories.

As our season year draws to an end, I would like to thank all members for the work that has been put into the Club this year. Thank you all for the support you have shown to Club throughout the year. Enjoy your rest period and I look forward to seeing you all on the boat ramp again next season. This year has been an exciting one with many great achievements throughout the year. All our members have contributed to all these achievements.

Our AGM is on the 20th August @ 7.00pm.
