Produce a glossary of terms specific to the methods and principles of sound design and production. Using a provided template, you must research and gather definitions specific to provided glossary terms. Any definitions must be referenced with the URL link of the website you have obtained the definition.

DESCRIBE THE RELEVANCE OF THE RESEARCHED TERM TO YOUR OWN PRODUCTION PRACTICE?

SOUND DESIGN METHODOLOGY

Foley Artistry Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foley_%28filmmaking%29

Sound Libraries a collection of sounds stored on file (for example on CDs, DVDs, or as digital audio files)http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/sound-library

SOUND FILE FORMATS Uncompressed Uncompressed audio files are the most accurate digital representation of a sound wave, but can also be the most resource-intensive method of recording and storing digital audio, both in terms of storage and management. Their accuracy makes them suitable for archiving and delivering audio at high resolution, and working with audio at a professional level, and they are the 'master' audio format of choice.http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/guide/uncompressed-audio-file-formats

.wav WAV is an audio file format that was developed by Microsoft. It is so wide spread today that it is called a standard PC audio file format.http://www.coolutils.com/Formats/WAV

.aiff AIFF is short for Audio Interchange File Format, which is an audio format initially created by Apple Computer for storing and transmitting high-quality sampled audio data.http://www.abyssmedia.com/formats/aiff-format.shtml

.au The Au file format is a simple audio file format introduced by Sun Microsystems. The format was common on NeXT systems and on early Web pages.https://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Au_file_format.html

.smp A ".smp" file may be one of several different types of audio file. For example, itcould be a Sample Vision audio sample file.http://www.ehow.com/info_12198596_file-smp.html

Lossy Compression “Lossy" compression is the class of data encoding methods that uses inexact approximations (or partial data discarding) for representing the content that has been encoded. Such compression techniques are used to reduce the amount of data that would otherwise be needed to store, handle, and/or transmit the represented content.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossy_compression

.mp3 MP3 is an audio coding format for digital audio which uses a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio streaming or storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on most digital audio players.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3

AUDIO LIMITATIONS Sound Processor Unit (SPU) A sound card (also known as an audio card) is an internal computer expansion card that facilitates economical input and output of audio signals to and from a computer under control of computer programs. The term sound card is also applied to external audio interfaces that use software to generate sound, as opposed to using hardware inside the PC.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_card

Digital Sound Processor (DSP)

Digital signal processing (DSP) is the mathematical manipulation of an information signal to modify or improve it in some way. It is characterized by the representation of discrete time, discrete frequency, or other discrete domain signals by a sequence of numbers or symbols and the processing of these signals.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_signal_processing

Random Access Memory (RAM)

Random-access memory (RAM /ræm/) is a form of computer data storage. A random-access memory device allows data items to be read and written in roughly the same amount of time regardless of the order in which data items are accessed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random-access_memory

Mono Audio Mono audio is one of the "Accessibility" features that you can enable through the system settings. It allows you to listen through only one earphone. Thus the term "stereophonic" applies to so-called "quadraphonic" and "surround-sound" systems as well as the more common two-channel, two-speaker systems. It is often contrasted with monophonic, or "mono" sound, where audio is in the form of one channel, often centred in the sound field (analogous to a visual field). Stereo sound is now common in entertainment systems such as broadcast radio and TV, recorded music and the cinema.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766116Stereo Audio Stereo, is a method of sound reproduction that creates an illusion of

directionality and audible perspective. This is usually achieved by using two or more independent audio channels through a configuration of two or more loudspeakers (or stereo headphones) in such a way as to create the impression of sound heard from various directions, as in natural hearing.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereophonic_sound

Surround Sound Surround sound is a technique for enriching the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener (surround channels), providing sound from a 360° radius in the horizontal plane (2D) as opposed to "screen channels" (centre, [front] left, and [front] right) originating only from the listener's forward arc.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surround_sound

Direct Audio (Pulse Code Modulation – PCM)

PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation. PCM technology is a means by which standard audio signals (which are represented by waveforms) are converted to digital audio signals (which are represented by 1's and 0's - much like computer data) with little, or no, compression.http://hometheater.about.com/od/hometheaterglossary/g/pcmdef.htm
