� IntroductionYour RadioShack Sound Level Meter isan extremely versatile device for measur-ing sound intensity in just about anyacoustic environment — loud or soft; high-pitched, low-pitched, or broad-band; inter-mittent or continuous. You can use it tomeasure noise levels in factories, schools,offices, and airports, or to check acousticsof studios, auditoriums, and home theaterinstallations.

Your meter features a large, easy-to-readindicator for taking quick measurements.The meter uses a 9V battery (not sup-plied) which allows you to use it any-where.

The meter’s other features include:

Seven Sound-level Ranges — allowmeasurements form 50–126 dB (refer-enced to 0.0002 μbar).

A And C Weightings — lets you checkcompliance with safety regulations andmake an acoustic analysis.

Slow And Fast Response Settings — letyou check peak and average noise levels.

7Installing a Battery

� Installing a BatteryYour meter requires one 9V battery (notsupplied) for power. For the best perfor-mance and longest life, we recommend aRadioShack alkaline battery.

Caution: Use only a fresh battery of therequired size and recommended type.

Follow these steps to install the battery.

1. Press both sides of the battery com-partment cover and lift it.

Note: The battery compartment covercannot be removed.

2. Place the battery in the compartmentas indicated by the polarity symbols(+ and –) marked inside.

3. Close the cover.

To test the battery, set RANGE to BATT. Ifthe meter shows a reading in the redBATT TEST region, the battery is stillgood. Replace the batteries when thereading is in any other region or the meterstops operating.

Warning: Dispose of old batteriespromptly and properly. Do not burn orbury them.

Caution: If you do not plan to use themeter for a week or more, remove the bat-teries. Batteries can leak chemicals thatcan destroy electronic parts.

Note: Leave RANGE in the OFF positionwhen the meter is not in use to conservebattery power.

RANGE

The RANGE selector lets you select one ofseven sound level ranges, each spanning16 dB. The RANGE numbers refer to thecenter points of the seven ranges. Theneedle level indicator shows the actualsound level as a displacement from thecenter point. For example, if RANGE is setto 80 and the meter scale reads –3, theactual sound level is 77 dB (80–3). If themeter scale reads 0 (same as the valuewhere RANGE is set), the actual soundlevel is 80 dB (80+0).

OUTPUT

The phono-type OUTPUT jack lets youconnect the meter to recording or othermeasurement equipment. For example,you might use an audio patch cord to con-nect the meter to the AUX or high-level in-put of a recorder.

Note: The meter response will not be flat,due to the A- and C-weighting networks.

Set RANGE so the maximum needle de-flection is never greater than +4, to pre-vent the built-in amplifier from clipping.Use A-weighting for voice recordings, orC-weighting for full-range musical materi-al. The OUTPUT jack can also be connect-ed to high-impedance headphones, or anoscilloscope, a frequency analyzer, or oth-er test equipment.

RESPONSE

The RESPONSE selector has two settings:FAST and SLOW. In the FAST position, themeter reacts quickly to changes in thesound level, showing you the peak soundlevels present in the environment. In theSLOW position, the meter is damped andindicates an average-value sound level.

The effect of brief sound peaks is mini-mized in the SLOW position.

WEIGHTING

Set WEIGHTING to weight the sound mea-surement for a particular frequency range.When set to A, the meter primarily mea-sures frequencies in the 500–10,000 Hzrange, which is the area of greatest sensi-tivity to the human ear. When set to C, themeter measures uniformly over the fre-quency range from 32–10,000 Hz, givingan indication of the overall sound level.

MICROPHONE

The meter’s built-in microphone worksbest when you point it directly at a soundsource.

TRIPOD ADAPTER

You can mount the meter on a camera tri-pod (standard 1/4–20 thread) to eliminatehand noise and minimize the effects ofsound reflected from your body. Thismakes it easy to use the meter with auxil-iary recording or test equipment.

CAL (CALIBRATION)

Your meter has been accurately calibrat-ed and normally will not require further ad-justment. If adjustment is necessary, takethe sound meter to an audio professionalwho can calibrate the meter by connectingspecial equipment, such as a sound gen-erator, to the CAL jack.

MEASUREMENTS

Important:

• Do not hold the meter directlybetween you and the sound source,as this might produce an error of sev-eral decibels in the frequency rangeabove 100 Hz. Position the meter soan imaginary line between you andthe meter is perpendicular to a linebetween the meter and the soundsource.

• Handle the meter carefully. Themicrophone and meter movement arefragile and might be damaged if theinstrument is dropped. Do not oper-ate the meter at a range setting thatcauses pegging of the needle. Thiscould damage the movement.

Follow these steps to select the desiredresponse, weighting, and range.

1. Set RESPONSE to FAST if the soundsource you want to measure consistsof short bursts or if you want to mea-sure only peak values. Or, setRESPONSE to SLOW if you want tomeasure average sound levels.

2. Set WEIGHTING to A if you want tomeasure noise level or C if you wantto measure sound levels of musicalmaterial.

3. Set RANGE to the highest setting (120dB) then adjust it downward untilthere is significant deflection of theneedle. For the greatest accuracy,always use the lower of any two pos-sible settings.

For example, if RANGE is set to 80 dBand the meter reads –5, resetRANGE to 70 dB so the meter reads+3, for an actual sound level of 73dB.

Important: For meaningful readings,any particular sound to be measuredmust be at least 10 dB louder thanthe background noise level.

While taking measurements, minimize theeffect of your body’s presence. When thesound is coming mainly from one direc-tion, the level reading might be significant-ly affected by reflections from your body.

For the most accurate readings and thebest polar response, point the meter’s mi-crophone toward the sound source whenpossible.

CHECKING NOISE LEVELS

This chart, gathered from Federal, State,and local agencies, shows standards foracceptable noise levels.

Noise is inevitable in almost any environ-ment. Depending on the level and dura-tion, noise can be a minor irritant, adefinite disturbance, or even a threat toyour hearing.

To use your meter to check noise levels,set WEIGHTING to A and RESPONSE toSLOW. Take measurements at severalpoints in the test area, with the meter posi-tioned properly.

CHECKING ROOM ACOUSTICS

The size, shape, and furnishings of aroom can have a tremendous effect on ahome theater system’s performance. A“hard” room with bare surfaces tends toexaggerate treble response, sometimesgiving the music a strident quality. A “soft”room with curtains, overstuffed furniture,carpet, and so on, might reduce high-fre-quency response. This may result a domi-nant bass sound.

Depending on the speaker placement,standing waves might also develop in theroom, giving your system a “peaky”, ec-centric response.

To determine a room’s acoustics, analyzethe acoustics with your meter and a suit-able test recording. The test recordingshould produce pure tones, one at a time,at intervals spanning the audio spectrum.Make a graph or table showing the soundlevels generated by the individual tones.This gives you a clear idea of the frequen-cy response of your “total system”—hometheater equipment and room included.

To smooth out the response, adjust thetone controls and vary the speaker place-ment. To approximate the ideal, “flat re-sponse”, you could add a frequencyequalizer to your home theater system.Your local RadioShack store carries fre-quency equalizers that let you boost or cutresponse in different ranges, as indicatedby your frequency response analysis.Properly equalized, your system cansound like one costing considerably more!

Note: When checking the frequency re-sponse, if WEIGHTING is set to C, themeter’s frequency response is flat from 32–10,000 Hz (± 3 dB). Above 10 kHz, thefrequency response of the meter drops offrapidly. Be sure to consider this when youuse a test recording that includes tones atthe extreme high end of the audio spec-trum.
