INTRODUCTIONBelievers who immolate Old Testament saints are immolating people living under provisions that are

inferior to those given believers in the Dispensation of Grace. Scripture states that the content of oursalvation is better than those saints. We will see today that the life of the Old Testament saint was a life

lived in the soul. They were not regenerated as believers today. Scripture teaches us that the believertoday, has been regeneratedthat is he has been born again. God has united his spirit in loose association

to Him in order that the believer can see things the way God does.1This is a benefit in which the Old

Testament saints were not participants. Today, well consider the emphasis of the soul in the life of theOld Testament saint and how distinct it was from what believers have today.

I.THERE ARE THREE PARTS OF MAN AS UNDERSTOOD BY SCRIPTURE.A. The bible teaches that man is comprised of a body.

B. The bible teaches that man is comprised of a spirit.

C. The bible teaches that man is comprised of a soul.

II. THERE ARE SEVERAL TERMS FOR SOUL USED THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE.

beast; it is the life of the body.Synonyms of the Old TestamentNote:

Thus the soul, according to the O.T. is the personal centre of desire, inclination,and appetite, and its normal condition is to be operating in or through means ofa physical organization, whether human or otherwise. Hence, when we readthat man or Adam became a living soul (Gen. 2:7), we are to understand that

the structure which had been moulded from the dust became the habitation and,to a certain extent, the servant of an ego or conscious center of desire appetite.When the soul departs (Gen. 35:18), the body becomes untenanted, and theego which has grown with the growth of the body is dislodged from itshabitation.

B. The Greek word used for soul is yuch/j (psuche).1. The derivative existence of all living creatures, including human beings life-

C. The soul is seen in Scripture as the animating principle for humans and animals.1. The soul is the animating principle in the lives of men.

a. The fact of the soul as the animating principle of human life is seen in thebreathing of life into Adam. cf. Gen. 2:7; 1 Co. 15:45

b. The facts are seen in the use of psuche in denoting the life of Christ. Matt. 2:20

c. The fact is seen in the Lords statement about the rich man. Lk. 12:20d. The fact is seen in the Lords soul not been left in hades. Acts 2:27

e. The fact is seen in those killed in the Tribulation period. Rev. 6:9

2. The soul is seen in Scripture as common to men and animals. Lev. 24:18

III. THE TERM SOUL IS OFTEN USED IN SCRIPTURE TO DENOTE AN INDIVIDUAL.

A. The apostle Paul used the term in Romans to emphasize the believers need to be

submissive to government authorities. Rom. 13:1

B. The term is used in Leviticus to emphasize individuals who commit certain acts. Lev. 5:1, 15;

6:2; 22:6

C. The term is used in Genesis of those who are uncircumcised. Gen. 17:14

IV. THE SOUL INTERPRETS THE FIVE SENSES OF MAN TO THE MIND.

A. The soul is seat of taste. cf. Num. 11:5-6; 21:5; Deut. 12:15, 20, 21; 14:26; Gen. 27:4, 19,

25, 31; Ps. 63:5

B. The soul is the seat of touch. cf. Rev. 18:12-14; Job 6:7

C. The soul is the seat of sight. cf. Rev. 18:12-14

D. The soul is the seat of feel. cf. Matt. 26:38; Ps. 42:1, 2, 11, Jon. 2:7

E. The soul is the seat of sound. cf. Pro. 16:24; 25:13

IV. SCRIPTURE DRAWS A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOUL AND SPIRIT.

A. The two words are used together just one time in Scripture. Heb. 4:12

B. The spirit is the rational part of the mind.

1. The mind is a larger part of man than the spirit. Eph. 4:23

2. The thoughts of a man are a result of the spirit. 1 Co. 2:11

C. The spirit is where the believers is regenerated. John 3:3; Gal. 6:18; Philemon 25

D. Both spirit and soul are necessary for maintenance of life.

1. The body without the spirit is dead. Ja. 2:26

2. The body with the soul is dead. cf. Acts 20:10; Gen. 35:18

Note:

Thelanguage of Heb. 4:12 suggest the extreme difficulty of distinguishing

between the soul and spirit, alike in their nature and in their activities. Generally

speaking the spirit is the higher, the soul the lower element. The spirit may be

recognized as the life principle bestowed on man by God, the soul as the resultinglife constituted in the individual, the body being the material organism animated

by soul and spirit."

E. The Bible draws a line of demarcation concerning those who are soulish and those who arespiritual.

1. The Greek word used to denote soulish is the word yuciko.j

2. The word spiritual is the Greek word pneumatiko.j

a. pneumat is the Greek word for spirit; it can be the place of the human rationale

or is also used of the Holy Spirit.b. The ending ikos is a Greek suffix that emphasizes the idea ofpertaining to

when added to the ending of a word.3. Definitions of pnumatikos emphasize the function of the human spirit.a. William Newell defines it as consisting of communications adapted to and only

understandable by beings of a spiritual realm or sphere.b. Alexander Souterwith general reference to the higher nature of man as

dir ectly in touch with and in f luenced by the divine, but sometimes associated

with the demonic worl d.

1. Regeneration, which takes place in the realm of the believers spirit, was not possiblebefore the Day of Pentecost.2John. 3:5; Rom. 8:9

2. Regeneration allows the Grace Believer to relate to God today in a way that the OldTestament saint could not.

a. The believer can worship God in his spirit. John 4:23-24; Phil. 3:3b. The believer can serve God in his spirit. Rom. 1:9

c. The believer can be renewed in his spirit. Eph. 4:23

V. OLD TESTAMENT SAINTS LIVED IN THE RELM OF THE SOUL DUE TO THEIR LIMITED

RELATIONSHIP TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.A. Some Old Testament saint were filled by the spirit to aid in making of materials to

serve God.1. Some were filled in order that they could make Aarons priestly

garments.2. Some were filled in order to help construct the tabernacle. Ex. 31:3;

35:31

B.The Holy Spirit came upon some Old Testament saints.

1. The Spirit came upon Gideon to empower him to lead men. Judges 6:342. The Spirit came upon Samson to perform powerful feats. cf. Judges

14:6, 19

3. The Spirit came upon Balaam. Num. 24:24. The Spirit came upon Moses. Num. 11:25

5. The Spirit came upon Saul. 1 Sam. 11:6

C.God interacted with the spirit of Old Testament saints to accomplish His desires.

1. The spirit of some Old Testament saints were stirred3. Haggai 1:14

cf. Dt. 32:11 (similar to an eagle that stirs her nest)2. Such stirring is consistent with Gods dealings with unbelievers also.

cf. Dan. 11:253. The Spirit provided for some saints to be endowed with wisdom. Deut.

D.Old Testament saints could accomplish certain things through his spirit.1. His spirit could sustain him in sickness. Prov. 18:142. His spirit was similar to a candle that searched the inward parts.

E.The Holy Spirit could depart from Old Testament saints.

VI. THE OLD TESTAMENTS SAINTS RELATIONSHIP TO THE SPIRIT DIFFERED FROM THATEXPERINCED BY THE CHURCH TODAY.

A. Spiritual maturity was not possible before the Dispensation of Grace.

1. The word maturity is the word teleio,w.

a. Vines defines teleio,was that which signifies having reached its end,complete perfect.

b. Lavern Schafer defines teleio,was the effect of experiental knowledge

gained while a believer is spiritual, or Spirit-filled, and acting in any

situation in a Scriptural manner.

c. Abbott and Smith defines teleio,was having reached its end, finished,

complete, perfect (development)

2. Maturity is illustrated in Heb. 5:14.

a. The mature believer has habitually used his senses -- perception.

b. The result of the believers habitually use is that he has exercised his

senses.c. The result of the believers exercised senses is he can make

distinctions.

B. The Jewish believers of Hebrews were not maturing, but were babesinarticulate

babbler. Heb. 5:11; (ill. Eph. 4:14)

1. Babes are blown about; agitated by waves (kludon) by every wind of

doctrine. (ill. Ja. 1:6; Lk. 8:24)

2. Babes are carried about; to be borne to and fro (periphero) by every wind

of doctrine. (ill. Mk. 6:55)

3. False teachers are the source of the spiritual instability of babes.

a. False teachers use slight (kubeiaintentional fraud) to deceive babes.

C. Old Testament saints under law could not surpass baby status. Gal. 4:1- 5

10. The soul is seen as following hard after Jehovah. Ps. 63:8

a. The phrase follow hard is the Hebrew word dabakwhich means to cleave to;

b. The Greek word used to translate dabak is the word kallaw which has the idea

11. The soul of the O.T. saint is seen as waiting for the Lord. Ps. 130:5, 6

a. Those who waited for the Lord looked eagerl y for H im.b. Old Testament saints could find themselves in positions where they had to

wait for Jehovah to come to their rescue in various circumstances. cf. 2

Ki.6:33; Prov. 20:22

c. Israel was told to wait upon the return of the Glory after He departed from

the temple. Is. 40:28-31; Zep. 3:8; Mic. 7:7

12. The soul could praise the Lord. 146:1

a. Praise is the Hebrew word hallal which means to shout, both in joy and in

b. The praise mentioned in the Old Testament differs slightly from that in the

New Testament. cf. Heb. 13:15

13. The soul of the Old Testament saint could be joyful. Is. 61:10

a. Joy in the New Testament is a mental contentment withcircumstances that are difficult. cf. Ja. 1:2

b. Joyful in the Old Testament is tied to the soul.

INTRODUCTION

Only the believer living within the realm of his regenerated spirit can operate in a way that ispleasing to God. Old Testament saints were not regenerated and were incapable of pleasing God

in the way believers can today. As the believer operates out of his renewed mind, he can

overcome the emotional instability that accompanies living in the soul and thereby do those

things that are well pleasing to God.

I.

NEW TESTAMENT REVELATION ABOUT THE SOUL CLEARIFIES THE PROPERRELATIONSHIP OF THE BELIEVER IN THIS DISPENSATION TO THE SOUL.

A. Peter reveals information about the soul not understood in the Old Testament.

1. The apostle revealed that the soul of the believer is not saved. 1stPet. 1:9

2. The apostle revealed that the sin nature makes its attack through the soul. 1st

Pet. 2:11

a. Fleshly lusts are those strong desires, cravings that emanate from the

fallen nature of man.

b. The word war offers insight into how the flesh provokes men toact.c. The Greek word used for war is strateo is a mil itar y term used to note

the making of a mi li tary expediti on, to lead soldiers to war or to

battle.Joseph Thayer cf. Ja. 4:1d. The word against means to come in oppositi on to f or the purpose of

B. Scripture reveals that the believer today can uniquely possess his soul.

a. Saving is actually the term made up of:

i. Eis which means into the act of entering into something.

ii. Peripoiasin is the act of possessing something in a way that

is unique to bel iever today. cf. 1st

b. The word of is better translated generally concerning the soul.

2. Scripture outlines the way the soul can be uniquely possessed today.

II. OLD TESTAMENT SAINTS COULD NOT FUNCTION IN THEIR SPIRIT THE WAYBELIEVER CAN IN THIS DISPENSATION.

A. There are several reasons seen in Scripture that go against the Old

Testament saint sharing the same content of spirituality.

1. The use of the word spiritual is scarce in the Old Testament.a. The term is used only once in the book of Hosea.

b. The Hebrew word used to denote spiritual is ruah

2. Descriptions of the term spirit of the Old Testament saint

described various dispositions of mind, but no emphasis uponregeneration of spirit or its resulting effects.

a. There was an expectation that the spirit of the Old Testament saintcould be absent of deceit. Ps. 32:2

b. There is an implication that one could rule (mashal exercise

dominion over, controls). Pr. 16:32

B. Old Testament saints could have certain qualities emanating from his spirit.

1. He could be humble5in spirit. Prov. 29:23

2. He could be patient6in spirit. Ecc. 7:8

3. He could be quieted7in spirit. Zech. 6:8

C. The Lord drew a line of demarcation in the future use of the spirit during Hisearthly ministry. John 4:24

2. The priestly service of the Grace Believer is contrasted with that of those

E. The believer worshipping God in the realm of his human spirit puts no confidence

in his flesh. Phil. 3:3

III. THE GRACE BELIEVER CAN BE FILLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THEREBYPRODUCE SPIRITUAL RESULTS UNATTAINABLE TO SAINTS BEFORE

PENTECOST...

A. The Holy Spirit can fill up whats lacking from the fruit of the Spirit in the life ofthe believer when he overcomes the sin nature. Eph. 4:18

B. The spiritual believer can appreciate the things the believer has in Christ. 1 Co. 2:9-15

C. Believers can offer spiritual sacrifices to God.

1. The word forsacrificeis the word thusia.a. I.S.B.E. defines thusia as a presentation to diety of some material

object, the possession of the offerer as an act of worship; it expresses

homage, grati tude and need.

b. Vines define thusiaas the act of off eri ng or that which is offered.

2. There are positive and negative results ofsacrificesin Scripture.

a. Some sacrifices accomplished the intended goal.b. The sacrifices under law served to purify the tabernacle and the

vessels in it. Heb.9:21-23.

c. Sacrifices were made for sin under law. Heb. 5:1d. Sacrifices in Scripture testified concerning the righteousness of some.

3. Some sacrifices in Scripture fall short of Gods desires.a. The sacrifice of Cain was rejected. Heb. 11:4

5. There are six sacrifices of the Grace Believer listed in Scripture.a. The Grace Believer offers his body a living sacrifice. Rom. 12:2

b. The Grace Believer offers a sacrifice of doing good. Heb. 13:16

c. The Grace Believer offers a sacrifice of praise. Heb. 13:15d. The Grace Believer offers a sacrifice of giving. Phil. 4:18

e. The Grace Believer offers a sacrifice of faith. Phil. 2:17

V. THE SPIRITUAL BELIEVER CAN MANIFEST THE LIFE OF THE INDWELLING CHRIST.

A. There are two aspects of the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit that produces the proper

attitude towards other believers.

1. Love is a desir e for and a deli ght in the well -being of the one loved

even i f i t cost you something others centered, sacri f icial. (Schafer)

a. Love (agape) is different from brotherly love (fondness).

(cf. 1Tim. 5:10)b. Love is illustrated in the lives of believers in Scripture.

cf. Heb. 6:10; 1stThess. 1:3; 4:9-10

c. Love prevents believers from doing evil towards

another. Rom.13; 8-10; Eph. 5:25d. Believers serve one another as a slave by love. Gal. 5:13

2. Goodness is that qual ity in whi ch one does as much as ever

he can and proves his moral quali ty by promoting the well -

being of him with whom he has to do. (Cremer)

a. Goodness is contrasted in Scripture with evil words.b. Goodness is contrasted withpornerosevil. Matt. 12:34-35

c. Goodness is contrasted with kakos evil. Rom. 7:19; 13:4

d. Goodness is contrasted withphalosevil. 2 Co. 5:10; Rom. 9:11

B. Two parts of the fruit aids the believers relating to others.

1. Kindness is a sweetness of temper, putti ng others at ease. (Schafer)

a. Kindness is illustrated by God in Scripture towards men. Rom.

2:4; 11:22; Tit. 3:4b. Kindness is not a characteristic of the unsaved man. Rom. 3:12

c. Kindness is the means by which men are brought to repentance.

2. Longsuffering is that qual ity of self -restraint in the face of provocation

which does not hastil y retaliate or promptly punish. (Vines)

a. God illustrates longsuffering in dealing with the unsaved. 2 Pet.3:9, 15; 1 Pet. 3:20; Rom. 9:22

b. Longsuffering is illustrated in the life of Paul. 1 Tim. 1:12-16

c. Longsuffering is a substitute for slothfulness. Heb. 6:12

C. Faith and joy and peace stabilize a believer.

1. Faith has two components. Heb. 11:1

a. Things hoped for.b. Evidence of things not seen

c. Faith is based upon a promise from God. Rom. 4:20

d. The faith of as spiritual believer is seen in his works. 1 Thess.

1:4e. The spiritual believer walksby faith. 2 Co. 5:7

. 2. Joy is:

a. Schafer -- is enjoying cir cumstances whatever they may be; a

mental wi ll ingness to accept and appreciate any cir cumstance

without resentment or frustration in these circumstances.b. DNTTis the response of the mind to any pleasurable event or

state. It is both exemplified in life and character. And set forth

in the teachings of Jesus. There are many imitators that in spiteof the profound elements of grief and tragedy in His life, His

habitual demeanor was gladsome, and joyous; certainly not

gloomy or ascetic.

c. Joy is contrasted with words of anguish.

i. Joy is contrasted withgrief. John 16:20

ii. Joy is contrasted withgroaning. Heb. 13:17iii. Joy is contrasted with offended. Matt. 13:19-21

d. Joy reaches its zenith when faced with adversity. Ja. 1:2; Heb.

10:34; 1 Thess.1:6; Acts 13:52; 20:24

3. Peace is:

D. Meekness and self-control can keep a believer from being sidetracked from

Gods plan.

1. Meekness is a tameness of mind, or control of the mind (spirit) thatkeeps one focused on accomplishing an objective. (Schafer)

a. Moses was called the meekest man on earth. Numbers 12:3

b. The meek among the nation Israel were told they would inheritthe earth if they did not succumb to the pressures of theTribulation period. Matt.5:5; Ps. 37:1-11

c. The Lord Jesus displayed meekness in His earthly ministry.

Matt. 21:5; 11:29d. Meekness keeps the believer from being sidetracked in his

dealings with the unsaved. Tit. 3:2; 1 Pet. 3:4, 15
