CHAPTER ONE

The room was dark, save for motes of moonlight seeping in through the curtains, which

illuminated the faces of the two girls as the slept! The earl morning air was crisp and cold,

with a "lanket of snow accentuating the e#terior landscape! One of the girls rolled over into a

foetal position and "egan to dream!!!

The "edroom door was slightl a$ar and %ororit girl, %ophie &ouise Emmington sat

up in "ed, her lustrous "londe hair tum"ling across her night shirt! Her slender frame

manoeuvred to the edge of the "ed where her delicate feet touched the warm fur rug upon the

floor! Tip'toeing over to the window %ophie could see a tall, dark'haired figure standing

outside! Her crstal "lue ees widened as the lone figure "egan to tap and scratch on the

window pane with its long, sharp nails! (t "egan to speak, in a low, rasp voice!

%ophie opened the window a$ar where a gust of cold air permeated the room! The dark figure

placed its hands upon her shoulders, turning her awa from the window to face the mirror

which was hanging on the wall a"ove her "ed! %ophie looked at her roommate, +adison

+asters, who had not even flinched throughout this whole ordeal! a-ing into the mirror

%ophie could onl see her own reflection, et she felt the touch of the figure as its hands

moved swiftl and firml over her "osom and it "egan to kiss her neck! (ts "reath was fetid

and its skin ice'cold to the touch! %ophie*s muscles rela#ed as she felt almost in a state of

paralsis!

The ees of the )shadow* glowed red as it arched its head to reveal two sharp canine

incisors . the fangs were as white as ivor! The )shadow* "it down upon %ophie*s $ugular

vein as the digital displa on the clock changed to four am!!!

%ophie stifled a scream as she awoke from the lucid nightmare she had $ust

e#perienced! &ooking around the room, %ophie saw that +adison slept soundl undistur"ed

" her room'mates strange encounter! Outside a flurr of snow mercilessl "uffeted the

wooden sign which welcomed visitors to the house/ 0elcome to the Alpha 1elta Pi %ororit

house!

%ophie sat up in "ed, wiping the perspiration from her forehead! lancing over at the "edside

ta"le there was a prospectus adorned with the words )0elcome to 2rookview 3niversit,

home of the %outhern California mascot, 0ile the 0olf!*

reat, its +onda morning, thought %ophie, ( need to get some rest!

As she continued to surve the room she thought she spotted a figure sat on the old rocking

chair in the corner! %he didn*t know if she was awake or asleep, "ut nonetheless sat up in "ed,

"olt upright and "egan to scream!!!

)%hut the hell up* a sharp, annoed voice called from out of nowhere in the darkness!

+adison +asters flicked on her "edside light, prompting %ophie to do the same with hers!

)(t*s gone four o* clock in the freaking, morning! 0hat*s wrong with ou4*

)%orr*, %ophie replied! )( guess ( had a nightmare*!

)0hen ( signed up to "e roommates with ou, %ophie, ( specificall re5uested that (

wanted someone 5uiet, who respected the schedules of others!*

)%top saing ou*re sorr and go and see a therapist or something! This is the third or

fourth time in the last month that ou*ve distur"ed m rest with our cra- night terrors! &a

off the late night horrors or something!*

+adison ru""ed her ees and ruffled her hair as she watched %ophie "egin to cr!

%he placed an arm around %ophie*s shoulders, hugging her!

Oh, no we had a test toda as well and ( have missed it, %ophie thought!

%ophie eventuall decided to face the conse5uences and got dressed= she needed to eat

"reakfast "efore she left, as she felt light'headed! After eating a "owl of cereal she put a

$acket, scarf and "eanie hat on read to face the chill of the morning 1ecem"er air! As she

approached her &incoln Continental she worried that the car would take a while to start! %he

got into the car, ad$usted her mirrors and placed the car in drive! Turning her kes in the

ignition the car sputtered and shuddered until the engine warmed up! %he tuned the dial until

she picked up the local radio station of 2rookview 3niversit . reen Acre Count radio,

%outhern California!

As she drove to the 3niversit, she "egan thinking a"out her father! %he was ver

close to him and she visited him on weekends regularl! He was an attorne working out of

&os Angeles! %ophie "egan to reminisce a"out times spent with her father, 2rad

Tears continued to form in the ees of the little girl*s father as he remem"ered the true events

which led to the death of her mother!

On the eve of night, when the moon is "right, a stranger comes a calling, with gifts of

%ophie was startled " an irate motorist in the vehicle "ehind her! After crossing the

"ridge at +ill*s Pond and turning right on to route >?, she was stuck in a traffic $am!

lancing at the clock it was now gone half past eleven, thus with firm resolve she

decided to face the conse5uences from Professor arrett, after she had "een for lunch!

arrett! %he got up and walked down the hallwa from the food court and into an elevator at

the "ottom of the corridor! %he pressed floor four on the displa, which took her to the end of

the corridor and to the 3niversit*s Philosoph department!

0alking down the hall %ophie eventuall reached Office three'seventeen! The door

displaed Professor 0es arrett, Emeritus Chair, 2rookview Philosoph! The door was

locked so %ophie knocked hard on it three times!

)Come (n*, replied a stern, authoritative voice!

%ophie opened the door and entered the office, which was warm to the skin and smelt

of pine scent! 2ehind the desk sat a man in his earl fifties with gre hair and rudd pink

skin! The man motioned %ophie to sit down in the chair opposite him, which she did!

)+iss Emmington= m classes on a +onda run from nine o*clock until nine fift, et

here ou are at $ust gone one o* clock in the afternoon! 1isrespecting m schedule is "oth

insolent and intolera"le! 0here were ou4*

)( didn*t sleep ver well= ( have "een having nightmares!*

%ophie felt tears "eginning to form in her ees, "ut she held them "ack!

)9ou need to get our house in order otherwise ou are in $eopard of losing that

%ororit accommodation ou live in! %ororit sisters must maintain a minimum rade Point

Average to remain in residence there! 9ou are on the edge of that PA slipping "elow the

standard!*

As she left the office she closed the door "ehind her and "urst into tears! %he ran

down the hall and into the elevator, pressing the "utton for the ground floor, and ran down the

corridor through the food court, and out of the door into the oppressive gre skied courtard

where the snow continued to fall heavil!

As she walked along a mriad of thoughts clouded her mind!

There has to "e more to life than this!!!

%ophie walked along, the snow crunching underfoot which sounded like someone crushing a

"ag of chips in their hands! The ava 2ean coffee shop looked warm and inviting as she

stepped through its doors! The store was "us with students from all walks of life!

%ophie approached the counter attendant and asked for the password to gain access to

the store*s account so she could use the wireless fidelit technolog to go and surf online!

%he missed her father and wanted to send him an e mail to see how he was doing! %he entered

the password which was Reindeer for the month of 1ecem"er on one of the computers! %he

opened her e'mail program and saw that she had no messages! %he "egan to compose her

father an e'mail, when she was distracted " an advertisement which appeared on the screen!

set in for the night and as it fell, the campus lights shone upon it= illuminating it and making it

monitor! Turning around another dark figure was silhouetted against the open doorframe!

name, 2rad! %he saw that one new message was waiting for her! The username was from

someone calling themselves, 2ritishane! %ophie clicked on the message and read with

anticipation!

like how msterious ou are! 9ou ma wonder wh ( am contacting ou! 0ell, even though (

am from England, ( am moving to 2rookview 3niversit in preparation for a school

driver*s seat of her &incoln Continental and was $oined in the front passenger seat " essica'

&ouise! Carmen, Corrine and ara all clam"ered into the "ack!

%ophie pulled the car out of the drive, and set off to the "ar! As she slowl edged

forward she spotted something in her rear view mirror!

)Nothing, ( must "e tired! ( thought ( saw someone "ack in the %ororit house!*

)There is no"od in the house, hone! ( am sure ou*ll "e fine once ou get some

top of the house in the attic!*

As %ophie drove awa into the distance, a msterious figure watched the car

disappear into the night! The figure was a tall, "londe ghostl visage! As the figure continued

to watch it turned its attention to an old scrap"ook full of famil photographs ling on the

attic*s dust floor! As the figure looked at the image in front of it the representation possessed

striking similarities!

The photograph was of three people .a man, a woman and a oung girl! The figure

traced the words at the "ottom of the photograph, focussing on the figure in the middle! There

"elow the woman was written a series of words!

(n loving memor of Anna"elle taken from this life "efore her time! A loving wife

and mother!
