WHAT IS IT about the month of April that it
seems to boost our spirits yet exhaust us at
the same time? The extended days beckon
us to stay outside and play with our children
just a little longer and to extend that stroll
into the next block. The warmer weather
makes it so easy to enjoy that backyard
barbeque or plant that spring garden. April
seems like a gift.
On the other hand, school is wrapping
up, sports are in full swing and it can feel
like we might never get everything accom-
plished. But somehow, we always do. So, I
plan to head out to the ballpark for those
little league baseball games, wave to my
neighbors as they take their evening strolls,
and enjoy watching the little ones filled with
Spring fever.
In this issue, we literally have a guide to
help you soak up everything the Northshore
has to offer. The Northshore’s Best results
are in and as always our readers burned up
the ballots. We thank you. On April 8, we are
anxious to see everyone at our annual Hats
Off Luncheon where we plan to relax among
friends for good food and vibrant guests and
announce our Enterprising Woman of The
Year for 2010.
So, this month, no matter what is on your
plate, here’s hoping you find the time to enjoy
a backyard barbeque with family, eat some
popcorn at the ballpark, explore some of the
Northshore’s best, and finally, treat yourself
to a relaxing afternoon luncheon with some
lovely ladies on Friday April 8th.

FAMILIES THAT EVOLVE from a second or
third marriage in which children are involved
are referred to as “blended.” These families
comprise a significant portion of the popula-
tion, given the fact that a large number of
divorced or widowed individuals remarry,
bringing their children into the next mar-
riage. Although the nuclear family model
continues to be the societal norm, the fact
is that the number of blended families is on
the rise and makes up a significant propor-
tion of all families.
Blended families can encounter unique
challenges, the most common being the
unrealistic expectations of new relation-
ships. One frequent mistake people make is
underestimating the impact of this joining.
These can include residential relocation or
sharing “their” home with a new person, the
assumption that a nurturing relationship will
form between stepparents and stepchildren,
that the adjustment period will be relatively
short, or that this new family will eliminate
the grief experienced through divorce or
death. When unrealistic expectations are not
met, relationship conflicts can arise.
Role confusion is also a common problem
in blended families. For example, a new step-
parent must adjust to the new role, and the
established alliance between the spouse and
the child can leave the step-parent feeling
excluded and unsure about how to parent.
Additionally, children may feel conflicted
about developing a relationship with the
stepparent due to a perception of disloyalty
to the non-custodial or deceased parent.
In dealing with these types family issues
the dynamics of each relationship inclu-
sive of roles, expectations, and boundaries
within the “system” need to be explored.
Communication and clarity regarding expec-
tations can assist in a smoother transition
for everyone involved.
The Dynamics of Blended Families
It’s okay to feel temporarily
blue, but try not to fall into
a rut.

Hannah Manetta has already been so many things to so many people as a young woman of only 18 years. This Slidell High senior has lived a life of service to others. Dur-ing the summer of 2010, Hannah spent her free time on trips to homeless shelters in Portland, Oregon, the Women of the Congo and the Navajo and Choctaw nations, where she built wheelchair ramps and really began to feel that mission work could be her life’s work.
She helped in rebuilding after Katrina, and she is heavily devoted to her church. She is the co-founder of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Praise Band where she is the pianist every week and has been actively involved in several church programs. Her extracurricular activities include Slidell High School tiger mascot, Beta Club, Key Club and National Honor Society. She is a stellar track athlete and she maintains a 4.5 grade point average.
Hannah says she is honored by the HERO award, and that she plans to continue her life of service after her high school career. “I will attend Lewis and Clark College in Oregon and pursue a degree in International A airs. I plan to continue to do lots of mission work and reaching out.”
Congratulations to Hannah Manetta. Hannah Manetta with Shelly King of Charter Business.

WITH WARMER WEATHER right around the
corner, it won’t be long before you are wearing
the latest spring styles. When sporting a
swim suit around the pool or at the beach, it’s
important to keep in mind all the body parts
that will be on display. Show the world how
you want to look and feel your best.
Bikini line hair removal is a must to look
your best in your new swim suit. So just how
are you going to get rid of the hair without
irritating your skin? Using a food product
like sugar sounds odd, but it’s how Egyptian
women have removed their facial and body
hair since the days of Cleopatra. The sugar
paste is all natural and chemical free and
it removes the hair and the root. Any hair
that returns is lighter, finer and sparser.
Depending on your hair growth and type, the
hair may stop growing and give you freedom
from shaving, waxing, electrolysis and laser.
Better yet, submit to a unique, painless and
permanent process.
The “Brazilian” meaning removing all the
hair from the bikini line area is the most
popular, because our bikinis have gotten so
skimpy. This is the best choice for insuring
you are comfortable while playing volley ball
at the beach or just sunbathing. The under-
arm area is the next most popular since body
sugaring will eliminate those black dots that
are left behind after a razor is used. Finally,
the gentlemen also want to look their best
while hanging out at the beach or boating,
by having their backs sugared. The men‘s
grooming sessions help keep “uni-brows” in
check while insuring the nostrils and ears
are also hair free.
With spring at our doorstep, spring clean-
ing doesn’t just have to mean cleaning out our
closets and putting away our coats. Spring
cleaning should also include our bodies and
getting ready to bare some skin—some hair
free, smooth and silky, soft skin. Dora Ochoa’s offi ce, Body Sugaring USA Day Spa, is located in Mandeville at 1800 West Causeway Approach, Ste. 122. Call 985-626-5538 or visit bodysugaringusa.com. Dora is a Licensed Massage Therapist and is nationally certifi ed in therapeutic massage and bodywork.

IF AN ALGEBRAIC equation or a page full of
fractions makes your children want to run,
they are not alone. Many students have math
anxiety; however, they will have to master a
lot of math before they graduate. Also, today’s
most interesting and lucrative careers depend
on math success.
One of the first steps in helping students
overcome anxiety is knowing what is expec-
ted at each grade level. Since past skills build
on future skills, it is imperative that each level
is mastered.
In pre-kindergarten through second grade,
you must focus on the basics. This includes
whole numbers, common fractions, two-and-
three dimensional shapes, sorting, classifying,
and understanding length, weight, volume,
area and time. Addition and subtraction facts
are mastered.
In third through fifth, students should have
a good understanding of fractions, decimals,
percents and negative numbers. This is when
they are highly engaged in the building blocks
of algebra and advanced geometry. Multi-
plication and division facts are mastered.
Junior high is critical for both confidence
and mathematical reasons. This is when many
students develop the “I’m not good at math”
philosophy. Confidence in math is vital for the
challenges that are ahead. Students need to
use fundamental algebraic and geometric con-
cepts to problem solve. There needs to be an
excellent understanding of ratios, proportions,
prime numbers and exponents.
For high school students who do not master
these levels, they will not be able to face their
greatest mathematics challenges successfully.
You can demystify math by ensuring your
children have a solid foundation. If they are
struggling in math, you will want to get help
right away. With a positive attitude and a focus
on problem areas, students can find a winning
formula for success.
April is Math Awareness Month
Most standardized testing
does not penalize you for a
wrong answer so make sure
nothing gets skipped.

THE CLOSER WE ARE to the equator, the more
common a condition called pinguecula and
its more advanced version, pterygium (the ‘p’
is silent), is seen on the surface of the eye.
Pingueculae are yellowish, slightly raised
lesions that form on the white part of your
eye and cause a constant feeling of a foreign
body in the eye. The lids can no longer spread
tears evenly and dry areas result. They are
typically found in the space between your
eyelids, an area exposed to the ultraviolet
radiation of the sun. People who spend a lot
of time in the sun, and sometimes younger
people who are frequently outdoors without
sun protection often develop pinguecula.
When it continues to grow over the cornea,
it is called a pterygium.
A pterygium can stretch and distort the
cornea and some people acquire astig-
matism and suffer a decrease in vision.
Patients often seek treatment for cosmetic
reasons, as it presents as a white to yellow
mound of tissue sometimes looking very red
with irritation.
Prevention can slow the growth of a ptery-
gium, but sometimes, surgery may be indi-
cated. Surgery can leave a normal looking
appearance while also giving the patient
comfort. Pterygia recur at a rate of up to 40
percent after surgical removal.
Amniotic membrane transplantation
involves suturing or gluing a piece of surface
eye tissue onto the affected area after ptery-
gium removal. This method is very safe
and has a low recurrence rate. Primarily
used in the treatment of pterygium, amni-
otic membrane transplantation has received
global acceptance as a useful tool in almost
every type of ocular surface surgery. It
speeds ocular healing, quiets inflamma-
tion and allows restoration of a healthy
ocular surface.
Neil F. Notaroberto, MD, is a retinal specialist and practices with Dr. Lisa Pradillo at EyeCare 20/20 located in Mandeville, 985-624-5058, Slidell and Harahan. Visit www.eyecare2020.org for more information and videos of the practice.
Amniotic Membrane Transplantation

THE OLD SAYING “Timing is everything”
is especially important for particular skin
conditions where treatment is significantly
more effective if begun early. At the recent
American Academy of Dermatology meeting
in New Orleans, vitiligo was added to this list
which includes conditions such as shingles
and warts.
Vitiligo produces large patches of com-
pletely white skin, contrasting with the
adjacent skin of normal color. Researchers
have concluded that treatment with pre-
scription creams and ultraviolet (UV) light
within three weeks of its onset produces
much higher response rates compared to
delayed treatment. Optimal results can also
be achieved with early treatment for the
common splotchy pigmentation so often
seen on the faces of adult women by using
prescription bleaching creams that can
return the skin to its natural tone.
Skin infections should always be addressed
early, and the immediate treatment of shin-
gles is especially important. If an area on one
side of the body is tender to touch or a red,
blistering rash on the face, scalp, torso, or
limbs is evident, a dermatologist should be
seen that day, if possible. Early and aggres-
sive treatment of the involved areas of skin
may spare months or years of intense, debili-
tating pain. If three or four days elapse before
treatment of shingles is sought, it is often too
late to avoid a painful, long-term recovery.
Finally, seek treatment for warts when they
are small and few in numbers. If allowed to
grow into small “cauliflowers,” numerous and
more aggressive treatments may be required.
This is especially true of warts around the
nails and on the palms and soles.
When confronted with these time-
sensitive maladies, seek a skin specialist
immediately.
ASAP Treatment for Skin Conditions
Dermatologists are often asked,
“What is the best sunscreen?”

Happy People—It’s OKWRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
lifestyle І hAppIness
Dr. Mary W. Speed is a licensed therapist and consultant.
BEING HAPPY DOESN’T seem to be very
popular. Bemoaning tragic events gets a lot
of press. For fear of being thought superficial,
the jubilant minority are reluctant to speak
up. I’ve been talking to undercover happy
people. They trust me not to reveal their
names, so of course I won’t.
I’ve met these people in different situa-
tions and surprisingly to me in therapy ses-
sions. “Why would a happy person come for
therapy?” I asked. Here’s a sampling of what
I’ve been told.
“I came to therapy a while back because
I was going through a hard time. I learned
some things and got okay. I’m coming back
just for a check-in because, I am happy and
want to stay that way.”
“We’re happy but are making a career
move and want to make sure we deal with
things so that we don’t have misunderstand-
ings later on.”
In general, happy people report that
the only downer to being happy is feeling
guilty about it. While they sympathize with
unhappy people, they don’t understand why
when the decision to be happy is open to
everyone, anyone would make a choice to
be unhappy. Happy people, it’s okay—I feel
your joy.
Bemoaning tragic events
gets a lot of press.

EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT for a healthy life-
style and in pregnancy. Exercise can help
reduce backaches, constipation, bloating and
swelling that often occur throughout preg-
nancy. It may help to prevent or treat gesta-
tional diabetes and increase your energy. It
elevates your mood, improves sleep, perks
up your posture and promotes muscle tone,
strength and endurance that may improve
your ability to cope with pain of labor.
Women with vaginal bleeding, risk factors
for preterm labor and premature rupture
of membranes should not exercise. If you
are otherwise healthy, consult your doctor
to craft a healthy exercise plan. Sports like,
walking, swimming, and aerobics are con-
sidered safe during pregnancy. Some pilates
and yoga classes are designed for pregnant
women. Running and strength training, in
moderation, are safe for women who have
done them for awhile before pregnancy.
All pregnant women should avoid downhill
snow skiing, some racquet sports, contact
sports, scuba diving, gymnastics, water
skiing and horseback riding to name a few.
Exercising at altitudes higher than 6000 feet,
like skiing, can increase your risk of altitude
sickness and may cut down on your baby’s
supply of oxygen.
Follow these general guidelines for a safe
and healthy exercise program: avoid any
exercises on your back after the first trimes-
ter, avoid exercise in hot humid weather,
keep well hydrated, wear a bra that offers
good support, and consume the daily extra
calories you need during pregnancy. Stop
exercising and call your doctor if you experi-
ence any vaginal bleeding, dizziness, chest
pain or contractions.
Exercise during pregnancy can help
prepare you for labor and childbirth and it
can help reduce many common problems
that occur with pregnancy.
Exercise During Pregnancy is a Plus
The vagina is a delicate
ecosystem composed of
good bacteria.

lifestyle І ADVICe
DO YOU AGREE TO DO things you really don’t
have the time or energy to do? Do you try
to please everyone all of the time? Do you
have difficulty standing up for yourself? The
easiest way to reduce stress and live a more
fulfilling lifestyle is to create strong bound-
aries. It can be difficult at first, but the result
will be a happier, calmer you.
1. Self-Awareness—Pinpoint situations
where you to feel overwhelmed, anxious or
just plain agitated. This identifies where you
need more space, energy or personal power.
2. Setting Your Boundaries—Start with
simple yet firm guidelines in a composed
tone. This is initially uncomfortable, but as
you see your own well-being improve, you
will understand why it is so important to
clarify your personal boundaries.
Clearly state your boundary with direct lan-
guage. For example: It is not okay for you to
comment on my (weight, finances, parenting
style, etc.). Other times it is as basic as learn-
ing to say “No, thank you.” Always remember
that when something is asked of us we have
the option to decline.
Do not defend your boundary. Effective bound-
aries are set in one or two sentences. When
faced with resistance, smile and repeat your
statement. Only you have the power to make
the boundary stick.
Back up your boundaries with action. When
someone ignores your request, there must
be a consequence. Limited contact or not
cooking for a week may be possibilities.
3. Be ready for the guilt—Guilt is tough
(especially motherly guilt). It is the most
common obstacle in learning to nurture
yourself. Initially, you will feel guilty, but the
truth is—if you do not prioritize yourself no
one else will!
The saying is true—“How can you be
expected to take care of others if you don’t
take care of yourself.”

KEVIN LAZAROE HAS been in the import
business for over a decade. He appreciates
handcrafted furniture and when he began
to shop for his own home, he could not
find the imported handmade look he was
so fond of on the Northshore. As the owner
of several Northshore businesses including
CCTV Imports, Northshore Spy and Security
and ATR Gym, he decided to make it available
through his newest venture, Seven Wonders
Furniture in Mandeville. “Once a month I
travel to India and Indonesia, and we actually
design the furniture from the beginning. We
get new inventory every other week. You will
consistently have different and new selec-
tions of one-of-a-kind pieces.”
The furniture, handmade from reclaimed,
recycled solid wood and metals, is sold direct-
ly to Kevin. “You can find beautifully crafted
imported furniture at very competitive
prices, because you are essentially buying the
furniture directly from the manufacturer.”
Kevin enjoys spending time with his three
children and enjoying the family atmosphere
here on the Northshore. “I live in Madisonville,
but the entire Northshore is home to great
people. This is just a wonderful place to live
and raise your children.”
Seven Wonders Furniture is located at 2600

WHEN SYLVIA Reine’s husband of 30 years, Ronnie,
approached her with the idea of opening a shop in the
La Reine Olde Towne Centre in Slidell, she immediately
thought of the two women in her life she would most
like to help her do it. Her daughter Laura Reine and her
daughter-in-law Leonette Loe were the obvious choices,
and Three Divas and a Sugardaddy Fine Gifts was brought
to fruition.
Sylvia has over three decades of experience in every-
thing from construction, to disaster cleanup, to landscape,
subdivision and interior design. In fact, her husband
Ronnie was among the first on the scene in New Orleans
in the direct aftermath of hurricane Katrina, while
Sylvia, who had evacuated to her sister’s house in north
Louisiana, coordinated the cleanup from there. “It was a
scary time for me. I was petrified because we could see
that the levees had been breached, but Ronnie didn’t even
know about it. Luckily, he evacuated to safety until our
crews could get in and clean up.”
Far from a major disaster cleanup like the Superdome
or the Convention Center, Sylvia says the formula for
success at Three Divas and a Sugardaddy is the same.
“Pulling your people together and surrounding your-
self with people you can trust is important,” she says.
“I enjoy disaster cleanup and we have a great team. At
Three Divas, we have so much fun and we are not only
family, we are friends. The girls who work with us are
exceptional.” When it comes to working so closely with
her daughter Laura and daughter-in-law Leonette, Sylvia
could not be happier. “Leonette does an extraordinary
job of showcasing our inventory. I have so much appre-
ciation for her design and setup. And Laura, well, she is
our number cruncher. If things get stressful, we just take
turns having meltdowns.”
Leonette has lived in Slidell her entire life. In fact, she
was born at Slidell Memorial Hospital. Her hands-on expe-
rience helping with her stepfather’s dry cleaning business
in Slidell equipped her well for running Three Divas and
a Sugardaddy. “This is what I was meant to do. I like to
coordinate things and see everything come together. And
of course, I like to shop!” And she even enjoys working
closely with her in-laws. “Laura and I were friends before

All the ladies bring a little of their own flavor to the store, from the
rhinestone embellished black denim jacket featuring an Elvis silhou-

loves. But their aspiration was to open a store where customers can
find a gift for anyone in any price range. With baby clothing and gifts,

those aspirations.

wares from many local and regional vendors. “We try to carry prod-

made in the USA, Sylvia says they try to house it in the store. “We try
to put as many things in here as we can that are made in America. It
is definitely a priority for us.” Once you find that perfect gift, choose

While Sylvia and Leonette share a common bond through their
business endeavor, their strongest bond is the one they share as
family. Their eyes fill with tears when they talk about their relation-
ship. “I want to be there for my family. I hope to pass on to my grand-
children that they should love and enjoy their family while they are
here,” Sylvia says. Three Divas and a Sugardaddy is located in La Reine Old Towne Center at

In addition, they carry the Lafco, New York candle line, specialty

and linens. Handmade quilts from Sylvia’s hometown of Urania,
Louisiana, stand in the front of the store, along with hand-made
wares from many local and regional vendors. “We try to carry prod-
ucts from locals in here as much as possible,” Leonette says. If it’s
made in the USA, Sylvia says they try to house it in the store. “We try
to put as many things in here as we can that are made in America. It
is definitely a priority for us.” Once you find that perfect gift, choose
a greeting card from their extensive selection of Blue Mountain
cards, while you wait for your complimentary gift wrapping.

AS SILLY AS THIS QUESTION sounds, why do
we want our teeth? What would it be like not
to have our teeth? For each of us we will ini-
tially respond on a practical level. But believe
it or not we are in some way emotionally
attached to them.
Many of the baby boomer generation can
remember a parent or parents having partial
or total edentulism at an early age. Many
may remember a parent having to alter their
lifestyle due to the inability to properly func-
tion with a removable dental appliance, or
worse, being embarrassed by a failure in a
social situation.
As dentistry continues to find conserva-
tive ways to repair and replace broken-down
teeth, many people still face obstacles in cre-
ating a lifetime plan for their dental health.
Many have seen their parents approach
to dental care as an emergency visit to
the dentist. Dental insurance companies
have tried to lure both patients and den-
tists into making this unique relationship
based service industry into a commodity
based service. There are so many factors
that control individual fees per service than
cannot be seen on the surface.
With advancements that prolong our life
spans into our 70’s and 80’s, we need to
consider what we want for our dental health
in the future. We only get one set of OUR
natural teeth. What would you do to invest
in yourself for the next 40 to 50 years? Would
we realistically choose the same path of
reactive commodity based dentistry? Would
it be possible to develop a long term relation-
ship with a dentist who would invest his or
her time in your dental future?
We only get one set of OUR
natural teeth.
Why Do We Love Our Teeth?

LASERS? YES, LASERS. This may sound like
something out of a Star Wars movie, but
lasers have become a valuable instrument in
most, if not all, segments of dentistry. Lasers
come in all shapes and sizes, but the critical
difference is the type of tissue the laser will
“cut.” This is described as either hard-tissue
(teeth) or soft tissue (gums). In orthodontics,
soft tissue lasers are the norm.
Soft tissue lasers in orthodontics serve
several purposes, and can reduce treatment
time in some cases. For teeth that are slow
to erupt, and covered with gum tissue, your
orthodontist can “uncover” the tooth and
glue a brace on at that visit. This allows the
orthodontist to move that tooth into the
proper position sooner than simply waiting
for it to erupt. The laser is great for contour-
ing the gums around teeth to improve the
smile esthetics. It is also super for removing
swollen gum tissue due to less than stellar
hygiene, nickel allergy or mouth breathing.
The entire procedure takes less than 30
minutes, and in most instances is performed
under topical anesthesia (no shots). The dis-
comfort is minimal; the best frame of refer-
ence is a pizza burn, and the healing process
is usually a matter of days. Another feature
is that the procedure is bloodless.
Lasers have entered the realm of dentistry
and are here to stay. They are a great tool
that allows for increased esthetics, better
results, and—when appropriate—more effi-
cient treatment.

SPRING IS HERE. And with this change in
season comes several other changes; change
of weather, change of wardrobe and more
importantly, change of activities. Many
people become dormant during the winter.
By the time spring rolls around, everyone
seems to be anxious for fresh air, exer-
cise and outdoor activities. Hobbies such as
biking, hiking, jogging or walking the lake-
front are often started with intensity and the
best of intentions.
When starting up new spring activities
your joints need to be considered. Any new
demands placed on stiff, overworked or
aging joints can cause pain and discomfort.
Joint pain is often caused by the connective
tissue matrix that is responsible for cushion-
ing joints called articular cartilage. When a
joint experiences wear and tear, it leaves the
articular cartilage worn down or completely
obsolete. This results in bone on bone fric-
tion and reduced range of motion and pain.
Articular cartilage has no blood supply,
leaving it very slow to self repair. Luckily
there are ways to prevent these joint
problems before they start. By taking a
Glucosamine, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)
and Chondroitin blended supplement on a
regular basis, symptoms will be less severe
or non-existent. The cartilage will also be
able to repair faster and safe guard against
the destructive wear and tear of the joint.
The glucosamine will provide your cartilage
with the essential building blocks for repair.
Chondroitin will assist in the maintaining of
healthy articular cartilage. MSM is an organic
sulfur source which helps to nourish and
enhance articular cartilage.
When taking up new activities this spring,
remember to protect your joints. Start fueling
your body with the proper supplements now
in order to help or prevent joint pain in
the future.

MANY PEOPLE THINK that estate planning is simple.
You just press a button on a word processor and out
comes a Will or other document that does just what you
want. However, it’s just not that simple. There are many
reasons that it takes someone with years of education
and practical experience to advise you and prepare docu-
ments to accomplish your wishes. Typically, you have not
even thought of all the questions, much less the answers
and why they are important.
For example, many people think in terms of giving spe-
cific assets to specific people. Sometimes this works. But,
oftentimes people do not consider the possibility that
their estate planning documents could become effective
at their death decades in the future. Will you still have
that IBM stock you had planned to leave to John? Will you
still have the beach house you had planned to leave to
Susan? What should happen if you had sold one or both
prior to your death? What if the IBM stock had gone the
way of Enron and the beach house had skyrocketed in
value? If there are expenses and taxes to pay, should the
recipient of each gift pay his or her share of the expenses
and taxes or should some recipients receive their gifts
without the burden of expenses and taxes?
There are also many technical legal and tax issues
which you might never spot until your heirs end up in
conflict or the IRS is knocking at their doors. In addi-
tion to overlooked problems, without a qualified estate
planning attorney you can miss opportunities to plan
for Medicaid and VA Aid and Attendance qualification, to
avoid probate and succession, to reduce income, estate,
gift, and other taxes, and to provide for your family.
An estate planning specialist examines your unique
situation and goals, your family and financial circum-
stances, and tailors a plan to meet your needs. From a
simple Will or Trust to a complex plan including multiple
advanced planning strategies, not every tool is applicable
in every situation. Whether you are just starting out in
life, or are in your twilight years, an attorney who special-
izes in estate planning can listen to your goals and tailor
a plan that is best able to achieve those goals.
Estate Planning is Simple, Right?

to use human-identical hormones. Be certain
that they are willing to assist you in this
process. We have already developed excellent
working relationships with many physicians
to develop BHRT plans for their patients.
If you’re already on synthetic HRT and
are enjoying good symptom control, your
physician may simply switch you over to an
appropriate human-identical equivalent.
If you are suffering from multiple symptoms,
doctors may need to perform a blood or saliva
test to check your hormone levels as an
additional diagnostic tool. A saliva test can
be useful to determine your hormone levels
and does not require a prescription, but is
not always necessary to begin treatment.
We do advise though that you have your
levels tested within the first few months of
treatment and periodically thereafter.
Frequently physicians refer patients with
complicated cases to us for testing and a
hormone consultation. In this case, we will
suggest a consultation which consists of you
completing a medical history and symptom
questionnaire. We then set an appointment
to go through the questionnaire, and discuss
your symptoms and the treatment options
available to you. We then forward your
consultation form with our suggestions to
the physician for review, modification and/or
approval. Your physician’s positive response
will result in a treatment plan including a
prescription we can compound specifically
for you.

MANY OF OUR PATIENTS with neck prob-
lems relate to us that their problem began
as a “crick” in the neck when they woke one
morning, and then worsened over time. Well,
this morning, I suffered the dreaded “crick.”
Unfortunately for me it was accompanied
by a headache and a fair-sized dose of irri-
tability. If I were the inactive type or worked
in a set position behind a desk all day, this
could have turned into a larger problem.
Thankfully, I know how to take care of a
“crick” and I don’t mind self-treating.
Here is what to do next time you wake up
with a “crick” in your neck. Every hour or two
perform five to 10 “Yeses and Nos.” As you
can imagine, a “yes” is nodding your head
forward and back slowly, as far as you com-
fortably can without pain. A “no” is turning
your head to the left and right (as if looking
over your shoulder), once again as far as you
can, comfortably, without pain. Every hour or
two, lean your head to the side to bring your
ear toward your shoulder on each side. Hold
for 30 seconds unless there is pain. You want
to feel a light stretch. Exercise. Whatever it is
you normally do, keep on doing it as long as
there is no neck pain.
Of course, if your pain is more severe or if
you have any other symptoms such as pain
or tingling in the arm or hand, cognitive
issues, difficulty speaking, visual abnormal-
ity, fainting or dizziness—call your physician
or consult with your physical therapist.

WHEN YOU SAY ”HERBS,” what comes to
mind? Parsley, chives, oregano? All seem
familiar because we use them in every-
day cooking. Some are very pungent—some
very potent. Curly parsley makes interest-
ing, edible borders in a small garden. When
paired with sweet alyssum, it will also delight
the olfactory system as one strolls past.
Parsley is quite popular as garnish on dinner
presentations. Lavender is easily grown and
dried for its soothing fragrance in soaps and
sachets, as well as its beauty in the garden.
Herbs have always played an important
part in life as they are associated with
superstitions, good health, healing, romance,
religion and even politics. The Chinese con-
sidered artemisia to have special charm. The
French used it on infants to protect them
from colds. The Greeks used sweet marjoram
as a tonic and parsley as a cure for upset
stomach. Greek athletes used mint as part
of an after bath lotion. Rosemary had its
use as a tranquilizer and was said to cure
headaches. The Dutch allowed wild chives
in their pastures to give their cows’ milk a
chive flavor. During the Middle Ages, mint
was useful in purifying water that had “gone
stale” on long ocean voyages. Mustard was
The Herb in Today’s Garden
lauded by Hippocrates and mentioned by
Shakespeare in many of his plays.
Herb gardens were essential components
of early settlers’ plantings. Familiar herbs
growing in the frontier meadows like parsley,
anise, bay leaves, sorrel, watercress, wild
leeks and lavender, were widely found and
used. American Indians were teachers to the
settlers as to the use of herbs for medicine,
eating, tanning and dyeing leather.
Beginning gardeners will have many
choices in deciding just which herbs to
plant. Remember that herbs require full
sun, rich and well drained soil, and should
be planted near the kitchen (where most
are used). Rosemary, sage and winter savory
are considered strong herbs, while sweet
basil, dill, mint, tarragon and thyme are
accents. Chives, parsley and summer savory
are blending herbs. Anise, coriander, dill and
fennel do not transplant well, so sowing
directly into the garden is best. So as not to
sow herb seeds too deeply, mix seeds with
coffee grounds or fine sand as that will keep
them moist and well drained as well. Get
your herbs growing and enjoy the benefit of
their many tastes, aromas, and beauty.

FREDDY DRENNAN,
MAYOR OF SLIDELL
Come Out For an Enchanted Evening at Heritage ParkI AM EXTENDING AN invitation to you and your family
and friends, to come out to Heritage Park on Saturday,
April 30, for the city’s ninth annual Some Enchanted
Evening with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
The concert begins at 6 p.m. but you will want to
arrive early to enjoy all of the pre-concert festivities.
Admission is free.
The evening begins at 4 p.m. with an Enchanted Art
Walk where local artists will demonstrate their talents
and have their works on display. And of course there’s
the annual Mayor’s Picnic Contest. I’m challenging
everyone to get their family and friends together and
create the perfect picnic scene. In the past we’ve had
patriotic picnics, Cajun cooking and all kinds of clever
themes. So grab your blankets, picnic baskets, ice
chests and decorations and come out to Heritage Park
to enjoy a magical evening.
During intermission, I will recognize the most cre-
ative picnic spreads and announce the winners of
each of these four categories: Perfect Interlude (most
romantic setting), Chromatic Overtures (most creative
picnic spread), Grand Staff (best presentation by an
organization or office group), and Minor Scales (little
folks with big ideas—ages 12 and under). Participants
should register near the gazebo in Heritage Park start-
ing at 5 p.m.
I look forward to seeing how creative you can get.
I urge everyone to show their community spirit and
participate in this event.

Vote Early, Vote Often?IN APRIL THE VOTERS of Covington will elect a new
mayor and council, and in just a couple of months a
new face and writer will appear in this spot to rep-
resent them. While I support term limits, I will leave
kicking and screaming, but it will be time. In Covington
the limit is two terms. Boy, eight years can fly by and
they were the best of my life. And as hard as it will be
to leave it behind, I believe that a different perspective,
fresh energy, new priorities and renewed creativity
bring opportunity to our city. Long term incumbency
can lead to complacency and the phrase, “because
that’s the way we’ve always done it.”
Those who don’t support term limits will argue
that it’s up to the people to decide. It’s a tall order to
challenge a long term incumbent with years of estab-
lished influence, and what we in Louisiana have come
to call political machines and wealthy war chests. I
prefer the level playing field insured by term limits
and I applaud those who offer themselves for public
service.
Either way, the voters of Covington have some major
decisions to make in April, and I encourage them to
carefully consider their choices, but most of all to
make them and make them count in the voting booth.
The right to vote has been hard won, and each time
you exercise it, you honor the people who have fought
and died for your right to do it. Your vote is your voice.
Let yours be heard.

St. Tammany Citizens Rally After StormsONCE AGAIN, WE HAVE had the opportunity to witness
the generosity of the citizens of St. Tammany Parish
and the strong devotion to duty held by parish workers,
utility crews, Sheriff’s deputies and our fire fighters.
On the morning of March 9, three tornadoes hit St.
Tammany Parish: one in the Bush/Waldheim area,
one north of Lacombe, and one northeast of Slidell.
Neighbors were out immediately helping neighbors.
Emergency personnel were on the scenes quickly and
worked with amazing speed and efficiency. While
homeland security, deputies and firefighters were
assessing damage and our public works crews were
clearing streets for emergency traffic.
Some of the examples of generosity include: the
service station on the corner of East Gause and Pearl
in Slidell provided hot coffee in the rain to emergency
responders, American Red Cross volunteers provided
assistance in the Lake Village Subdivision, and Home
Depot donated tarps and labor to some of the worst
hit homes. This community came out strongly to help
its own.
In light of the recent events in Japan, we are all
thankful these storms did not cause any loss of life in
St. Tammany. As the world prayed for our area post-
Katrina, now our hearts go out to the citizens of that
devastated country.

Get Your Booth at Expo 2011WE ARE PLEASED TO announce that booth sales are
underway for our 17th annual EXPO—the region’s
largest business trade show—set to take place on May
4. We have secured a new location in the River Chase
Shopping Center on Highway 21 (the former Linens N’
Things space), near I-12. This convenient location will
allow for higher visibility and increased foot traffic for
our exhibitors. Another change this year is the time
frame, which will be from 3–7 p.m. We expect available
booth space to sell fast.
We are also in the midst of our annual Membership
Drive. If you are a business owner who has thought
about joining the chamber, now is the time! Or, if you
are already a member with a desire to get involved,
this is a fun way to start!
Recruiting efforts will be led by the Membership
Drive Committee and its chairman Cynthia Thompson
of Merrill Lynch. We will have several teams that will
compete to recruit the most new members. Our goal is
100 new members and our team captains are geared
up to meet that goal. But more importantly, we hope
to develop relationships with these new members, and
help them learn the value of chamber membership.
If you are interested in becoming a member of our
chamber or an exhibitor at EXPO 2011 call 892-3216 or

reCIPe І food
“FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD,” chanted the chil-
dren in the musical Oliver. This is the same
song sung throughout Italy and the world.
Undoubtedly, Italian cuisine is one of the
three top cuisines of the world. What makes
it so? Its simplicity, combined with its strong
ability to impart delicious flavors. If you’ve
ever been to Italy, you’re assured lifetime
memories of a diner’s paradise. With spring-
time upon us and summer on the horizon,
we leave behind the heavier meals of winter
in search of foods which are light, satisfy-
ing and at the same time, pleasantly filling.
Another great feature of Italian cuisine is
that many of its appetizers can be served as
a main course, and vice versa. The follow-
ing is a recipe which best demonstrates this
fact and satisfies the most discerning palate.
This is just another culinary gift from south-
ern Italy. Try it, and you’ll understand Mama
Mia! Buon appetito. Ciao, Ciao.
The Sweet Smell of Frittata
Frittata Profumata(Frittata With Fresh Mixed Herbs)
10 sprigs Italian parsley, leaves only
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, torn
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
6 extra large eggs
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1/3 pound cherry tomatoes, halved
Salt and pepper to taste
Wash and dry the parsley, basil and mint
leaves. Finely chop the parsley. In a deep
bowl, beat the eggs with a whisk. Add the
herbs and a little salt and pepper to the
beaten eggs. Place in a well oiled nine inch
cake pan and sprinkle top with remaining
salt and pepper and cherry tomatoes. Place
into a preheated 350 degree oven and cook
for about 20-25 minutes until golden and
firm. Serve with crusty Italian bread and
tossed salad, together with a full bodied
red wine for a great meal. Chef’s tip: For
additional flavor, top frittata with one cup
grated provolone or mozzarella cheese over
the tomatoes.

THE U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE announces that
after a comprehensive review, it is awarding the
East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce with 5-Star
Accreditation. This prestigious honor puts the East
St. Tammany Chamber among the top one percent of
Chambers nationwide. The U. S. Chamber of Commerce
recognizes the East Chamber for its sound policies,
effective organizational procedures and positive
impact on the community.
“Accreditation validates a chamber as having pro-
grams that benefit their local economy and for posi-
tively influencing action in their community,” said
Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, U.S. Chamber Executive
Director of Political Affairs and Federation Relations.
“We applaud these organizations for advancing the
principles of free enterprise.”
Special recognitions and remarks on the final report
included:
“The chamber board is commended for its active
involvement in the chamber’s operations, including
participation in the annual Mid-Year Retreat and the
Year-End Retreat to review the strategic plan.”
“The chamber does an excellent job of recognizing
volunteers for their efforts on behalf of the chamber.”
“The chamber is commended for its comprehensive
government affairs program focusing on issues at the
local, state and federal levels.”
“The chamber is commended for continuing to grow
the program that its membership values most—the
Annual Business and Community Showcase.”
The mission of the East St. Tammany Chamber of
Commerce is to advance the general welfare and pros-
perity of the region so that its citizens and all areas of its
business community shall prosper. To reserve your booth
at the 2011 Business and Community Showcase, or mem-
bership visit our website at www.estchamber.com.

The City of Mandeville in partnership with the
Northshore Community Foundation, contracted with
Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company to develop the Town
Center Resiliency Plan. Grant funding for the plan
was secured from the Louisiana Recovery Authority
Comprehensive Resiliency Program. An intensive
public planning process began in March and will
be wrapping up at the time of this publishing. Final
documents and plans will face final approval by the
council in early June. Implementation embraces New
Urbanism and Smart Growth principles to focus the
city’s economic energy into a critical mass and provide
for the civic needs of identity, community and sense
of place as well as provide an identifiable civic and
city center; blending housing, offices and shops within
walking distance of each other.
Mandeville Live! free Friday concerts have been a
success at the Mandeville Trailhead. The last one is
scheduled for April 15, featuring Kingsroe. Gates open
at 6 p.m. and the concert is from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Local
vendors will have refreshments available for purchase
as no outside food or drink is allowed. Join in the fun!
On Saturday, April 9th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. vol-
unteers are invited to clean and beautify Mandeville.
Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to
participate. This is also a great way for students to
earn community service hours. Projects will include
litter pick up, flower planting, weeding and mulching.

“WHEN I WAS LITTLE I used to think of ways
to kill my daddy,” intones 11-year-old Ellen
Foster, the protagonist of Kaye Gibbons 1987
debut novel Ellen Foster. Set in the mid to late
1970’s during the volatile civil rights era in
a small southern
community, the
young protago-
nist—Ellen—must
find a loving home
for herself after her
mother commits
suicide by over-
dosing on medica-
tion. Ellen suffers
at the hands of
her father before
being saved by her
art teacher, only to be sent to live with her
grandmother, then her aunt Nadine, before
landing on the doorstep of a foster parent.
She finally finds a home, a loving foster
mother, and a dear friend (Starletta) who has
endured a more difficult life than she has.
Kaye Gibbons delivers a wonderful period
piece about the trials and hardships for two
young girls growing up in the rural south
during a time where their friendship could
be disrupted at any moment simply because
of the color of their skin. Gibbons’ book is a
testament to the Martin Luther King quote
about his children, “thinking that black was
only a color in a crayon box.” Those who
grew up in the rural south during the civil
rights era will appreciate the story of Ellen
and Starletta’s true friendship. Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons, is available at St.
Tammany Parish Libraries.
THE HISTORICAL NOVEL, I am Madame X, is a
pleasure to read. The narrator—Madame X—
carries the reader on a journey to antebellum
Louisiana, to Paris after the War Between the
States and into the American arts scene of
the 1880’s. It explains the circumstances sur-
rounding the creation of a famous painting “A
Portrait of Madame X.”
Several names and locations mentioned in
the book will be familiar to the reader. The
strikingly beautiful main character, Virginie
Amelie Avegno Gautreau, is born to a life of
privilege in New Orleans. A few years prior to
the Civil War, she spends much of her child-
hood at Parlange, her grandmother’s sugar
plantation, northwest of the city. After the
outbreak of the Civil War, as a young woman,
she and her mother move to Paris, to escape
the turmoil back home and to assimilate into
Parisian society.
In Paris, they encounter John Slidell, (Slidell,
Louisiana’s namesake) and his wife Mathilde.
They also meet the Baroness Michaela Pontalba
(Pontalba apartments’ namesake). During
their extensive and exhaustive social climb-
ing, they meet many prominent Frenchmen
and Americans, including the renowned artist,
John Singer Sargent. Smitten with Virginie’s
beauty, Sargent asks permission to paint her
portrait. Of course, she agrees, thinking that
it will enhance her social standing. Over time,
Sargent created several portraits depicting
Virginie—or as she was known in the art world
thereafter—“Madame X.”
If you are familiar with A Portrait of
Madame X, you know that Virginie’s image
eventually became immortalized as one of
Sargent’s finest works. Those who read the
novel will learn how the famous portrait
affected her life thereafter. I am Madame X by Gioia Diliberto, is available
at St. Tammany Parish Libraries.

PONCHATOULA'S JUST bursting with pride with all
the accolades we've received recently! More about
that in just a minute. The Chamber of Commerce
has been so busy this year. In January, at our installa-
tion banquet, we recognized Betty Stewart, Executive
Director of Tangipahoa Tourist and Convention Center,
as Citizen of the Year. A fourth generation Ponchatoula
High School graduate, Betty was lauded as the “back-
bone of Ponchatoula.” James Lirette, Regions Bank
Ponchatoula Branch Manager, Assistant VP, Small
Business Development, was named Volunteer of
the Year for all the tireless work he does serving
Ponchatoula and the parish.
At our annual “February Fun Fever,” our only fund-
raising event brought a record breaking-crowd, raising
more money than ever before to support our interstate
billboards. March rains couldn't stop our “Antique
Trade Days Arts and Crafts Fair” from turning out a
huge crowd on that Sunday. This semi-annual event
takes place again the first weekend in November.
Now for the accolades. The Southeast Tourism Society
chose Antique Trade Days as one of the top 20 events
in the southeast US. Country Roads magazine, in their
annual ‘Your Favorite Things’ issue listed Ponchatoula
as runner up in three categories: Strawberry Festival
first runner up to Jazz Fest as favorite festival; Chef
Lester Nicosia of Rockefeller's Restaurant, voted 2nd
runner up as favorite local Chef, (John Folse and John
Besh took two top spots), and of course Ponchatoula
took runner up as favorite place to go antiquing!
So, just come on over to Ponchatoula to see
why we’ve looked so good for the last 150 years!

BOGUE FALAYA PARK was the setting for quite a party
on Sunday March 20. The 2011 Chef Soiree to benefit
the Youth Service Bureau marked the 27th year of
this culinary event. With more than 85 participating
restaurants and beverage distributors, patrons were
treated to everything from Creole, Classic, Mexican,
to Italian cuisine and more, from in and around the
metro area.
With beautiful sunny weather and moderate tem-
peratures as a backdrop, crowds were greeted by the
New Orleans Hornets Drumline, danced the evening
away to the sounds of musical groups like Burgundy,
the Line King Dancers and the Hurricane Levee Band,
and had the opportunity to meet honorary event
chairs, New Orleans Saints fullback Heath Evans and
his wife Beth Ann. Dancing, dining and imbibing
lasted well into the night to make Chef Soiree 2011 a
spectacular success.

Family Dentistry
For Ashley Burris, RDH her greatest joy comes from getting to know her patients and giving them a cleaner mouth and an immediate esteem boost. She has some advice for her adult patients out there. “Periodontal Disease can go undiagnosed because you may not even have pain,” she says. Periodontal “probes” or “checks” measure the space between the gums and the bone. These probes are a key indicator of gum health. “If you visit the dentist now, you will save so much money in the future. Prevention is what keeps the costs down.” Ashley graduated from the LSU School of Dentistry in 2007.
