Description SIZE One FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Width: 6 inches, Length: 68 inches MATERIALS For scarf body: “Magic Ball” made of worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors (see directions on page 2) For crochet trim: Misti Alpaca Chunky [00% baby alpaca; 08yds/97m per 00g skein]; color: #403 Charcoal; skein set US #7/4.5 mm straight needles Crochet hook size J/0 (6 mm) Tapestry needle GAUGE 20 sts/26 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch PATTERN NOTES For this pattern you will need to wind your own ball of yarn out of shorter lengths of yarn of various colors. When knitting the scarf, always switch colors at the end of a row. That way your ends will be covered by the crocheted shell border. I learned this scarf-making technique from Susan Mills at a knitting and yoga retreat on Monhegan Island, ME (www. knittingandyogaadventures. com). For this scarf you’ll need to make a “magic yarn ball” (a ball you wind yourself using many different colors of yarn). Once you get your magic ball ready, the scarf is just an easy diagonal garter stitch pattern with a crocheted shell border. This is a fun knit and a great way to use up all of those shorter bits of yarn left over from other projects.

Magic Yarn Ball Start by cutting worsted weight yarn of all colors into approximately �80” lengths. Arrange yarns in the following rainbow color pattern: reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, indigos, and violets.
Starting with your reds, begin to wind up a center pull ball. When you get to the end of one piece of yarn, simply tie on another piece and keep winding. After you have wound up a few reds, add a few oranges, then move on to a few yellows, etc., working in the same “ROY G. BIV” color pattern mentioned above (Reds, Oranges, Yellows, Greens, Blues, Indigos, and Violets). When you get through your violets, start over again with your reds.
Continue winding until you have a sizable ball. My ball ended up being about the size of a very large grapefruit. If you run out of yarn while making the scarf, you can always add on to your ball as needed - rembering to add yarns in the rainbow color pattern.
Beginning triangle: With magic ball, CO 2 sts.
Row �: K into the front and back of first st, k to end of row.
Repeat Row � until you have 29 sts on the needle (or until the side of the triangle is the desired width of scarf).
Body of scarf: Row �: K into the front and back of first st, k to end of row.
Row 2: K2tog, k to end of row.
Repeat Rows � & 2 until scarf is desired length.
Ending triangle: Row 2: K2tog, k to end of row.
Rep row 2 until � st remains. Fasten off.
Knitting Pattern
With chunky yarn and J hook, attach yarn to corner of scarf.
Row �: Sc around edge of scarf, crocheting over rainbow yarn tails as you go to secure and hide tails within your crochet stitches.
Row 2: *3 hdc in next st, sk � sc, � sl st in the next st*, repeat around edge of scarf.
Bind off. Weave in loose end.
FINISHING Block using your favorite blocking technique.
