HELLO& welcome I was a doodle. At least that is how I chose to describe myself in my 9th grade English class. Sometimes I doodle, scribble, make marks on the page. Doodles are quick inspirations captured in a moment. They are full of possibility to be something greater, if someone believes in them. On the road to my calling I’ve learned the importance of persistence and trusting my instincts. Illuminary is about discovering your voice, responding to that quirky inner nature and going forward with what you believe in.

Be A Monster is a book series and activity set for young girls aged 3-7. The books were written and illustrated with the aim to develop early qualities of confidence and self awareness for the girls, through clever monsters who celebrate their differences. I infused a mixture of rhyme and silliness in the stories that appeal to children in the age group, while maintaining the central theme of the books. Translating the character of the copy into the character of the illustrations required consistent hand drawn elements, including type. Vectored color and texture were then offset underneath the drawings reinforcing the playful attitude of the piece. The set of books were compiled into an interactive package with coloring items, stickers, and activity pages.

“Agony of the Leaves” is a phrase known by tea aficionados as the precise moment a bundle of leaves unfurls at the bottom of the pot while it steeps. Designed for 30-45 year old women who trust homeopathic remedies, Agony of the Leaves features a bottled tea line of herbal flavors that help improve the mood of the drinker. Inspired by Victorian silhouettes, I kept the design of the typography and illustration flat and used simple, delicate swirls to translate the information.

The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau is a non-profit corporation that promotes tourism for the San Diego area. I was approached to design an illustration that could be painted and applied to a cement barricade downtown in a tourist heavy area. The design had to be accessible to the variety of age and ethnic groups that frequent the location. It needed to maintain an interesting and engaging design that reflected San Diego’s destinations. Staying with a nautical theme, I created a fantastical scene that gave nod to many of the visitor hot spots one might see in the San Diego area such as the Coronado Bridge and Sea World. I then gave it a twist by juxtaposing the familiar in an unfamiliar setting.
Pterygophora californica, or commonly known by the term “stalked kelp”, can live to be 25 years old.The original name of the Star of
India was Euterpe in 1863.
In the 1960s, Shamu was the second female orca to ever be displayed in public.
The Bridge won the Most Beautiful Bridge Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction in 1970.
San Diego has many opportunities to connect with turtles, from Sea World, to the San Diego Turtle and Tortise Society.
Mount Miguel resides in Spring Valley, with a beatuiful view of Mexico.
The Old Cabrillo lighthouse was built in 1855 after California was admitted as a state to the U.S.A.

Mehndi, the application of henna to the skin in intricate and delicate patterns, is a practice the can be found in India, the birthplace of yoga. The Mehndi brand combines the two cultural aspects into one idea, culminating in branded yoga accessories for women 25-35. I included my own personal drawings and doodles to construct the mehndi illustration, and explained the rules of application in the identity manual for the brand. The colors and type are kept soft and tranquil with ample white space, so as not to compete with the intricacy of the illustrations, and reflect the aspect of a mind and body at peace.

bike gearKeeping children safe is a task many parents face, and one that could be aided with the playful, quirky protectivebike gear found in RobotBoy. The fun, graphic illustrations of robots are perfect for the lifestyle of active boys aged 6 - 10. The bold graphic patterns and shapes of rivets and antennae are coupled with strong color and texture communicating the character and personality of the products.

In Peru, there are a group of women who are part of a non-profit orginization called “Awamaki”. They weave in the traditional Peruvian fashion with hopes of creating a better life for themselves and their families. “Awamaki” means “handmade” in the Quebecian language. Their beautiful and colorful patterns are reflected in my design for a promotional piece that would be mailed directly to an affluent, mature audience intereseted in world cultures and charity. I took note of the quality of thread that these weavers used and designed an inline typeface that could adequately translate it. A stair-step refrence to the patterns woven into the traditional materials, is found throughout the mailer. This is accented by muted photography that show the authentically beautiful nature of the women themselves.

SILVERAn often overlooked age group, Silver Magazine is aimed for the active senior aged 60-75. For those who still have a spring in their step and haven’t slowed down yet, Silver’s main aim is to focus on living a healthy lifestyle in both body and mind. I reflected this in the design of the magazine, showing bold clear colors and shapes, and large legible type. I chose the style of German photographer Karsten Thormaehlen to feature, and secured his permission. His work conveys the authentic spirit of the magazine: active seniors celebrating their age with beauty and incredible dignity.

The human brain is like a library that stocks memories instead of books. In some ways, that makes the hippo-campus, the part of the brain most involved in memory, the brain’s librarian. The hippocampus has the most responsibility in this cranial library, juggling the new releases of short-term memory while cataloging materials for the permanent collection of long-term memory. It’s not the only part at work, however, in storing these

Small independent theatres are places where experimental ideas thrive. It was for this reason that I chose The Rex Theatre to develop a set of promotional posters. The free exchange of emotions and thinking prevalent in this environment, is expressed through the energetic style of the design and illustration. Designed for art and culture patrons aged 20-35, the posters and branding of the theatre were created with a nod to historical design of the past. I used a Saul Bass meets Vienna Secession hybrid, focused on bold contrasting colors, large graphic shapes, and confident lines that change weight.
