Sony Smart Band

1
Earlier this year, Sony launched the “SmartBand” at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014. It can be considered to be the latest health and fitness tracking wearable tech gadget to hit the electronics market. It tracks everything ranging from the total number of steps one takes in a day to the sleep cycle of the wearer. No arguments that it looks quite similar to the Fitbit Flex, but it ends there. The Smartband has a silicone casing which is much skin friendly, softer and better than the rubbery band design of the Fitbit. Overall, the Smartband has much more to offer than any of its competitors in the current market. It also incorporates many smart-watch like features. An amazing feature of the Sony Smartband is that it can be paired with any smartphone running Andriod KitKit 4.4, thus not limiting the wearer to use Sony’s own smartphones. The first step to be up & running is that the devices have to be paired either through NFC or Bluetooth. Next, Sony's Lifelog needs to be downloaded and set-up. This also helps in controlling music, keeping track of your maneuver’s and vibrates in case of a call, text or email. Slight drawback here would be the absence of a screen wherein no one can tell who is calling or sending messages without grabbing the phone. Not unlike the Fitbit Flex, the segment where the battery and memory etc are encased is detachable from the band. The band includes an open micro-USB port. Staying true to the Fitness-centric & Sporty image, the Sony Smartband is waterproof. A quite interesting feature in-built in the ‘Smartwatch’ is that it starts buzzing incase if the wearer is far away from his/her smartphone, essentially minimizing the risk of forgetting or misplacing your smartphone. According to the scientists at Sony, “the SmartBand is a leash for your smartphone" and this is one of the many features that are built exactly to do that.
