CHAPTER NEWSOrange County Songsalive! July Workshop - Once again a small but

energetic group of songwriters gathered together in Westminster, California for

an evening of musical education and polishing. This time around we were

joined by Lisa Arreguin, a vocal coach and performance consultant from

Anaheim, as our Guest Speaker for the evening. Having arrived first, Gil

Mosard (one of our performers from our Monthly Showcase last Thursday)

was kind enough to start things off with a brand new song reflecting on life in

the 50’s and 60’s. Kip Corley was up next with a slightly naughty song about

marital infidelity brought on by bad weather — wet clothes you know. Lucius

Austin gave us a funky R & B number about a love that is falling apart and the

desire to rekindle it. And Kate Albright finished things up with a harrowing

song about human trafficking, where tragedy leads to triumph — buoyed along

by Kate’s soaring voice. Our Guest Speaker’s comments were friendly and

helpful, showing a genuine interest in the songs and the people who wrote

them.

Lisa gave her talk for us the title of “Organic Songwriting”, which she defines

as “the intention of taking a set of abstract concepts drawn from your own

experiences that are naturally unique to you, and purposely translating these

things into a tangible musical form”. Got all that? She breaks down that big

idea into four easy bite-size pieces she refers to as PUSH. That stands for

Passion (the drive behind all good and successful songwriters), Utilities (the

resources available to you for your songwriting, including the musical

community you’re in), Skill (practice practice!), and Hours (the time you take

and the time you make for your craft, INCLUDING time you take off to

maintain yourself and let your mind rest). She gave specific real-world

examples for each of these concepts based on her own experiences as an

aspiring songwriter and a music teacher, which helped to drive her points

home. -Rod O’Riley

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS

Chicago Songsalive! July Workshop – Chicago Songsalive! hosted

an educational songwriters workshop at the Beat Kitchen on July

12th. An attendee, Roland Labana, played two different arrangements

of a song called “Immortality” that he had written. Both versions were

very unique. We decided that the demo/stripped down version would

be good for sad funeral scenes in a movie. The other version had an

amazing female vocalist and a lush arrangement. Great stuff! For the

second half of the workshop, chapter coordinator, Mary Lemanski,

discussed the roots of American music from the Native Americans up

to the Civil War and played examples of each type of music. The

songwriting challenge for the month is to write a song in the style of

Native American music, European/Appalachian oral tradition, early

American Christian church (hymns, psalms, spirituals), or African

slave music (secular and/or sacred). –Mary Lemanski

Orange County Songsalive! July Showcase – Two talents who have

collaborated on each others’ songs in the past took to the stage at

Sam Ash Music in Westminster, California for our monthly Orange

County Songwriter Showcase this time. Gil Mosard is a veteran

songwriter who took several decades off from his craft, only to return

with renewed vigor after his retirement. His gentle, strummy folk tunes

never fail to entice with their poetic lyrics and complex wordplay.

Following up was newcomer Mouhammed Bassaj — at least a

newcomer to the Songsalive! Showcase. He’s been hitting the

Southern California music scene for years with a powerful voice and

heavy guitar playing — not to mention he’s a mean drummer besides.

Both of our performers this time found out about Songsalive! through

the weekly Sam Ash Music Open Mic Night; another sign of the cross-

pollination of musical communities that we’ve been encouraging for

some time. Find ways to mine your local talent! -Rod O’Riley

CHAPTER NEWS

Los Angeles Songsalive! August Workshop - The Los Angeles chapter of

Songsalive! Workshop series continued on Sunday, August 17th at The

Cahuenga General Store with the president and founder of Songsalive!, Gilli

Moon. Gilli examined the elements of several hit songs currently on the

Billboard charts and compared them to songs that were brought in by Pro

Members of Songsalive!. -Rik Lawrence

Los Angeles Songsalive! Songnet August Showcase - Once again, like

every month, we hosted our Los Angeles Songsalive! Songnet Showcase -the

theme, sizzling hot summer. Jimi kicked the night into gear with a couple of

songs, bringing full attention to the stage for Tysa Goodrich, a new

Songsalive! Member by way of SongNet, showing how our two orgs wor well

together! Formerly a national touring artist, Tysa brought great songs &

professional presence to the stage setting the bar pretty high for the night. And

as always Gilli brought it to the stage too, with Voyce McGinleyIII & J Walker

helping to raise the bar even higher!

And David Babich was fully up to the task, with brilliant songs & easy stage

manner from his experiences as an all around entertainer & actor (you may

have seen him in the Carfax commercials). Rounding off the night, Paul

Rasmusson brought pretty much an entire bar full of friends who came to

check out one of his rare live performances. A Songwriter of the year

nominee, he shared some great songs & left the crowd wanting more! The

open mic section which followed featured some great new talent as well, and a

sharp spoken word performance from our waitress Rachael McLaughlin.

These shows are always special & a continuing comment we always get is:

”Wow, I would have paid to see a show like that!” So if you haven’t been by to

see the show, you’re really missing out! -Jimi Yamagishi
