Hi Songsalive!rs, Welcome to another edition of the Songsalive! Songnotes Magazine, delivering everything you need to know to actualize and propell your songwriting career. We also send this to our music business and media counterparts, as well as music lovers who have joined our mailing list: as our community reaches beyond just the artist, but to all who love and support original music. This month, Songnotes is action packed with OPPORTUNITIES and articles, all about songwriting and the songwriting. You’ll find our latest calendar of events, from song critique workshops, to performance showcases, right across the U.S. We just re-launched our showcase in Nashville, TN, and many of our showcases need artists so apply in the Backstage of our website (LA, OC, SF, Chicago, NY and now Nashville). Each of our chapters have written reviews about their latest events so you can read how our worldwide communities are a-buzz. We have opportunities galore in our Backstage Forum (Songshop – pitch your song to music execs looking; and Gigs & opportunities. More inside.) Also, we are featuring our very own Mary Lemanski as Pro Member Spotlighted. She is not just a busy lass running our Team and Chapters as Director Of Operations, but a deserving artist/songwriter, so it’s her time to shine in the spotlight. (Did you know that all our Team are volunteers and songwriters? Pretty cool, huh?!) And now a little ramble from the prez,… So, 6 months on since we upgraded our website, where are we now? Songsalive!® is the leading international non-profit organization (public benefit charity) - run by volunteer songwriters, dedicated to nurturing, support, education and promotion of songwriters and composers worldwide. Through our grassroots international efforts, we’ve put a stamp on what “global community” truly is and it’s the type of community that is definitely needed in this ever changing music business where songwriting can be a very isolating experience and career. Back in 1997 when we started, there were very few artists on the Internet, let alone music organizations. There were very few websites, period. Songsalive! was one of the first truly global communities, bringing songwriters and composers together from all around the world. We were one of the first to provide educational services and support for songwriters and composers on a global level, and we've stuck with you through unbelievable changes in the music business and economic times at large. WE ARE STILL HERE.

Our website, since '97, was an informational portal to access resources about songwriting and the music industry. In 2007 we became an 'adolescent' so to speak, and were able to offer a membership portal where members could log in and access the Backstage (exclusive member educational content). What was always missing was a true, robust online community for our members, to engage, network, collaborate and learn online, no matter where you live in the world. With the advent of social networks, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, and the population's desire to engage online in an easy, social manner, our mission has been to bring our website and online experience to the level of such, and at the same time still offer exclusive backstage educational content and personal support. In September 2011 through the sweat and dedication of our volunteer team, we upgraded our site, we created this 'brave new world'. It's like Facebook, but even better. It's just for SONGWRITERS! This is unique. Not only can you now engage with each other on our website (add friends, update status, music, and pics), but you can learn through our website: attend an online song critique workshop, chat with other songwriters from different nations, and download songwriting learning content from our backstage portal. We have done it. The first of its kind. And we are proud to create this new online learning and support experience for songwriters. Now, in 2011, we've come of age, and we've found a way to provide it all to you through our new online community website. Our mission: to become the largest social network for songwriters and composers worldwide, and continue to be the largest songwriters' membership organization worldwide*, delivering online social interaction, backstage exclusive content, and personal attention & support, in an easy, fun, way to engage, network and share. Welcome to Songsalive! 2.0. REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! Long Island April Workshop – The Long Island Chapter is growing from month to month with some very talented people coming out to the workshops. It's really becoming a community of musicians and artists who love to create and talk about being creative. We all support one another and share our creativity. For example, at the end of the April 4th workshop we decided to try to write an impromptu song! We came up with a few lines about going out to the East End of Long Island towards Montauk and it was a lot of fun! Looking forward to the upcoming months and it's really inspiring me to write more too! Songsalive! Chicago April Workshop – Songsalive! Chicago hosted a workshop at the Beat Kitchen on April 14th. Two people shared a song, and everyone gave encouragement and helpful advice on how to make the songs better. In the second half, we discussed several songwriting topics, including how to market your music and website effectively on the Internet. We're looking forward to the next workshop on May 12th when songwriter/composer/producer, Danny Kravitz, shares his experience and discusses, "Professional Songwriting." Songsalive! San Francisco April Showcase – Songalive! is running a San Francisco showcase series every first Thursday of the month, currently held at Velo Rouge Cafe in San Francisco, CA hosted by local artist Katie Garibaldi, which features Songsalive! members performing outstanding original acoustic music. The most recent showcase took place on April 5th where local San Francisco singer/songwriter Steven Andrew Kacsmar was the featured performer. Steven, who plays solo as well as with his band Phantom City frequently around the Bay Area, played a full set of original songs, featuring tunes off his albums as well as a couple brand new songs.

NEWS Songsalive! Los Angeles April Showcase – The Los Angeles Songsalive! showcase at Hallenbecks on April 7th had a great night of original songs and performances by some of the top songwriters in Los Angeles. The evening featured Liz Nash, John Stowers, and Sharif. Liz Nash brought out songs infused by blues and jazz that captivated everyone. John Stowers is a masterful songwriter who rocked the house. Sharif played songs old and new that left everyone wanting more. This showcase is known for quality and we continued in that tradition to a good turnout. Another great night of music! Songsalive! Los Angeles April Workshop – The April Los Angeles Songsalive! Workshop welcomed Grammy winning writer, Franne Golde to address and share her extensive knowledge with our members. We had a great turnout for her workshop which focused on business and collaboration. Everyone walked away feeling energized and ready to tackle their next musical project. Songsalive! Orange County April Showcase – Songsalive! Orange County welcomed two of the South Bay's finest to our stage this month, as Kaye Reznick and Suzy Husner took to the stage. Kaye, of course, has been with us before and, as usual, impressed everyone with her guitar playing skills, her distinctive voice, and her tales of life in the LA basin. Suzy was a first-timer for Orange County, but we've had the pleasure of seeing her perform at other Songsalive events before -- and again, her soft and beautiful voice utterly captivated everyone. And then, of course, the two of them sang duets on several songs... and the effect was magical. Songsalive! Las Vegas April Workshop – Las Vegas is going strong. We had a good turnout at our new location, Guitar Center in Town Square with 12 people attending. Rob Case was our guest speaker and gave our members insight into the publishing business. He also listened to 7 songwriters' songs and gave through critiques. Rob's presentation is always full of the latest and greatest ideas in the market, and we always look forward to seeing him. The group shared some ideas with each other and overall everyone loved the new venue. We are looking forward to next month with Cat Cohen, May 8th at 6:30 pm at Guitar Center.

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! Los Angeles April Showcase – Songsalive! kicked off a new Showcase for its Pro Members at The Cork Lounge, Sherman Oaks. This venue ROCKS. It's part of Corky's Restaurant which has been in the area for eons. Kinda looks like an old 50s style diner but once inside the tiny Cork Lounge Bar at the back, you are transported to a new place. It's cozy, with a bar (happy hour all night), comfy chairs, booths and tables, and awesome service. We had a full house. Performers were Songsalive! president gilli moon and her band, J.Walker the Rhymecologist spoken word artist, 15 year old Julia Stark, 2010 Songsalive! Songwriter of the Year Award recipient Kaye Reznick, and local and also team member, Jimi Yamagishi. The talent was uber amazing, and the audience was very appreciative, even the Lounge's locals who at times hooted and hollered while they drank, ate, and even, played chess. The exciting news is we will be back again on a regular basis. Songsalive! Orange County April Workshop – Songsalive Orange County took time out from guest speakers at our monthly Songwriting Workshop this month to just concentrate on song reviews. Good thing too, as people brought in some good ones! We had two new faces join us this month -- one of whom made the trip all the way down from the San Fernando Valley! -- and one friend who hadn't been with us for a time came back, which is always nice. Rick Willingham started off with something unusual: An acoustic guitar instrumental song, which we all commented would sound great as part of a documentary soundtrack. Craig Smetana followed up with a recording he had made where an 80's style new-wave band wrote and performed music to his very funny lyric. Kevin Buckel, whom we haven't seen for a few months, contributed a spirited and rhythmic love song. Then as if to counter it, new writer Steve Finch showed us a rousing song which used Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor for a relationship gone very wrong. The new faces were very impressed, and the "old faces" were glad to see each other and share their music. A fine night.

NEWS

Songsalive! Long Island May Workshop – A Newsday reporter with a photographer attended this past Long Island Songsalive! Workshop on May 2nd, as she is writing up an article in the arts section of the paper in the next week. We had a good turnout, and everyone who attended shared their song with the group. Even my 11 year old guitar student came out with his parents and shared a song he had written. Everyone complimented him on being so brave and talented in writing at such a young age. There was even a woman who got referred to our group who has never written a song, but has the desire to do so, and she even shared lyrics she had written as well. The Long Island Chapter has really become a solid community of songwriters who support and encourage one another. Songsalive! New York May Showcase – The New York Showcase/Open Mic is going well. We've had a number of really great artists come through over the last few months. The New York chapter has a consistent following for open mic every Tuesday at American Trash, deemed as one of the best in the city! Workshops are also held to form a communal environment for songwriters, where ideas can be heard, admired, and improved! Songsalive! Los Angeles May Showcase – The May Los Angeles Songsalive! Showcase had a full house with standing room only in Hallenbecks. Three great artists performed: Justine Dorsey - who is only 17 but already has a voice and sound that is getting attention; Riddle The Sphinx - a band with a great eclectic sound who won the LA Music Awards for best alternative adult artist in 2005; and Tracy Newman and the Reinforcements - who sing smart songs full of humor and harmony. The audience loved it! Little kids were dancing around and adults were following the artist's every note and verse. A super night for Songsalive! Songsalive! San Francisco May Showcase – Songalive! is running a San Francisco showcase series every first Thursday of the month, currently held at Velo Rouge Cafe in San Francisco, CA, hosted by local artist Katie Garibaldi, which features Songsalive! members performing outstanding original acoustic music. The most recent showcase took place on May 3rd where local San Francisco singer/songwriter Jo D'Anna was the featured performer. D'Anna, who originally took guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia, and frequently plays live acoustic shows around the Bay Area, performed a full set of original songs, featuring tunes off her albums with descriptive storytelling.

Page 8: Songsalive! Songnotes June/July 2012

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! Las Vegas May Workshop – Our Las Vegas event was another positive experience. Although there were only 8 in attendance we had an interactive discussion with Cat Cohen, our speaker. He gave lots of insight on writing for a specific artist and tips to focus your writing. After a lively discussion, he listened to several of our members music and offered comprehensive feedback. We are looking forward to our next meeting on June 12th, 2012 at Guitar Center. Songsalive! Las Vegas March Workshop – Las Vegas had a wonderful treat. Matt Moran came to speak and give us lots of valuable information to those in attendance. He went over a roadmap for songwriters and bands to get their music heard with seven key points. His presentation was well received, and we had the opportunity to ask plenty of questions. We also listened to some songs from our members and gained insightful feedback. Bravo to those who came prepared. We are looking forward to next month with Rob Case from New Pants and Old Pants Publishing, April 17th at 6:30pm. Our venue might change, but we will do our best to keep Las Vegas going. Watch our Facebook link and web site for new event location updates. Songsalive! Orange County May Showcase – Matt Moran returned to the stage for another set of songs and stories -- and believe us, every one of his songs has an interesting story behind it! Several folks in the audience (which was mostly familiar faces and Songsalive members!) were there specifically to see Matt, and some of them are even collaborating on projects with him both on and off stage. This is one busy guy. And that's good when music is your life! The Conlons came up next, with their unique brand of spooky story-songs and soaring vocal harmonies -- to say nothing of Doug Conlon's rockin' take on playing a skinny acoustic guitar. The crowd left impressed, and everybody was exchanging business cards.

Songsalive! Grass Valley May Showcase – Once again the Songsalive! Grass Valley Showcase was well received by the people at Starbucks! We had 6 fans show up and there were 15-20 customers in attendance throughout the show. I opened with 6 or 7 of my songs and then my guest Ken Burnett did a 60 minute show. He plays guitar and mandolin and has a nice variety of clever “bluegrassy” type songs which reflected his dry sense of humor. We got compliments from the fans who showed up and many of the customers stopped to listen after they got their coffee. The staff was very friendly and complimented us on the show when we were done. Songsalive! Los Angeles May Workshop – The May Los Angeles Songsalive! Workshop welcomed Gold and Platinum songwriter Clay Drayton to share his extensive knowledge of songwriting success with our members. We had a solid turnout for his workshop which focused on how to write more picturesque verses and hooks. We were able to video Clay's presentation for future Songsalive online education. Networking was the word of the day following our workshop. Songsalive! Chicago May Showcase – On May 24th, the Chicago chapter of Songsalive! held their bi-monthly showcase at the Heartland Cafe. We had three amazing songwriters perform. Jill Dawson kicked off the show with a delightful set of pop/rock/folk tunes. She had a strong stage presence and a pretty voice. Next, Temple Schultz shared her amazing voice and great songs with the crowd. Mary Lemanski closed out the show with her unique style of piano rock. It was a very fun showcase! Songsalive! Orange County May Workshop – Once again no guest speaker for the Songsalive Orange County Songwriting Workshop this month, May of 2012. Our scheduled guest, Matt Moran, had a last-possible-moment family issue which forced him to postpone joining us. As is, the remaining 6 folks present at the Workshop got to work listening to one anothers' interesting and varied songs. Lucius Austin started things off with a jittery and nervous little number about finally shaking off someone you're trying hard to shake off. Returning new-face Steve Finch played his tune of a shameful whiskey'd life on a beautiful electric guitar, and the rest of us instantly recognized a cool Country pitch song. Gil Hager's latest song returned to a popular theme, the ocean as a metaphor for an overwhelming relationship, and took it to a whole new level. And just on an acoustic guitar yet! Jeff Dahl hadn't joined us for quite some time, and it was great to see him again. In the interim, it seems he hooked up with recording specialist Ronan Chris Murphy to complete a demo CD with a female vocalist. He played us the first track, and the crowd was impressed by the results. As Matt Moran was not there to discuss community networking for performing musicians, the group discussed another intriguing possibility: A musicians' community that helps to "seed" one-anothers' Kickstarter projects.

MARY LEMANSKI Interview excerpt: "Chicago has an amazing music scene. I just read a study a few weeks ago, entitled "The Geographic Flow of Music," which said that Chicago is #2, behind Atlanta, for setting trends in music. There is virtually any style of music you can find being created here. I love it! I think the music industry in Chicago has nowhere to go but up!"
