Dave Harvey & Gilli Moon with Songsalive! Songwriter of the Year Award recipient, Kaye

Reznick

Welcome to the April 2011 edition of Songnotes! We have some big things in the works! Our Songsalive! Member Songwriter of the Year! Is Kaye Reznick – the award was given to Kaye at the Jan. 2011 Los Angeles Showcase. Songsalive! CD Sampler 11 is now finished – we have received some amazing songs from ALL around the world in all different genres of music. This is an exciting CD that features and promotes the artists and their songs to the music industry and the media. It is never retailed and only available at our Songsalive! Chapter events or when we are at Industry Expos and Conferences. The cover art is fab and designed by Australia's own Stephen Kiely. Our member of the Month are Sabrina and Craig, who are long time Songsalive! Elite members and who have just released their new CD “One Home...One Heart”. Our Partner of the Month is our own Gilli Moon, who has released her new book, Just Get Out There. Songsalive! was happy to be back at The Durango Songwriters Expo in Feb. We had a great team running the booth and not only enlisted new members but made many new friends too. We are very happy to announce that Carlos Tambora has joined the Songsalive! Team as the new Membership Coodinator. Many thanks go out to Nancy Haskim who had been the previous membership coordinator for several years – we wish Nancy all best wishes in her future ventures. The Songsalive! Chapters have all been busy with their events and it is great to see that the New York City Chapter is back with the open mic / showcases. We have the new Long Island Chapter coming in May with their first Songwriter's Workshop, and more news on the way.

Winter NAMM 2011 Songsalive! Showcase – Jan. 13th -

Songsalive started off 2011 with a Bang down here in Orange

County, California, as six artists gathered together on a

Thursday afternoon to entertain the crowd at the Starbucks

Coffee inside the beautiful Anaheim Hilton Hotel. The event

was the annual National Association of Music Merchants

(NAMM) winter trade show at the Anaheim Convention

Center. The Hilton came up with the idea of having live

musical performances inside the hotel's Starbucks, and

Songsalive was quick to jump on the bandwagon -- literally!

Six singer/songwriters over two hours, performing in two sets

of three, singing in the round. The performers included Kaye

Reznick (recently selected as the first Songsalive Songwriter

of the Year), Kathleen Blackwell, Annie Calder, Rob Drabkin

(visiting from Colorado), John Stowers, and Mike V. The

crowd ate it up -- both those who were seated, and those who

were just waiting in line for their caramel latte'. Special thanks

to Mark Michlick and Mike V. for helping to set things up and

run sound. And of course, thanks to Gilli Moon for arranging

things with the Hilton -- and thanks to the Hilton for having us!

Songsalive! Sydney Workshop – Dec. 7th - We had a great night… Christmas Party, Music Quizzes and Critiquing.

Sydney Chapter had a good turnout this month, our last Workshop until Feb 2011. CAN’T WAIT FOR SANTA!!!! We had

some members return from Nashville after a few months away. They had a good trip. We played a quiz-type game similar to

Spick & Specks (An Australian TV show on the ABC). We had two teams. Eleanor was Captain of the winning team, and

Dom was the captain of the team that came 2nd. Rita was the host of the games. Thanks to Rita for organising this and to

Eleanor for organising the Christmas treats and nibbles. It was awesome! Well Done to Eleanor’s team who won the night.

This involved questions about music and musicians, who am I, and a game where a team member had to sing the words of a

book to a famous song tune and see who could guess the melody. This is harder than it sounds but a lot of fun. Nearly

everyone presented a song….and some great songs indeed!

Songsalive! Sydney Workshop – Feb. 1st - We kicked off the year on a very hot and sultry February 1st. It was good to see

so many members, some of them new, full of enthusiasm and vigour and ready to launch into another year of creative

fervour. Our guest speakers for the evening were Stephen Kiely and Roxanne Kiely who gave a talk about the decision made

in July last year when The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), announced it had registered a new

code exempting digital commercial radio stations from any local music quotas for 3 years. Then we reviewed a number of

songs, including one or two by new members. Observations were made, wisdoms were shared and there was a laugh or two

besides. All-in-all, a pretty good night!

Songsalive! Los Angeles Workshop – Feb. 20th - The Feb 2011

LA Workshop was Franne Golde emphasized the importance of

collaboration at the Feb LA Workshop. Songwriting alone can be

insufficient and we all need to find others to co-write songs with.

Songsalive! Los Angeles Showcase – Mar. 4th - TThe Los

Angeles Songsalive! showcase at Hallenbecks on March 4th was a

magical night of great music featuring John Stowers, Dean Dobbins,

Roz Eposito, and Sharon Bautista. March came in like a Lion with an

evening of wonderful original songs. The venue was packed with a

warm, enthusiastic audience. All the artists got a roar of applause at

the end of the evening.

Songsalive! Los Angeles Workshop – Mar. 20th - The March 2011

LA Workshop with Chuck Tennin emphasized the importance of

collaboration with producers, singers, musicians, engineers, and

other skilled technical professionals to produce the best mastered

demo possible or your song. He emphasized getting your song to the

"right level". He talked about how the industry is in current times that

a fully mastered demo is essential for getting many TV and Film and

Advertising placements. Chuck Tennin is the President of Big Fish

Songsalive! Orange Workshop – Feb. 27th - A small group this timearound, but the discussion was lively -- and the music was terrific! First upR.D. Girard gave us a new song he's been working on about, of all things, music! And the joy of making it. After him was new Elite member LauraSuarez with a heavy blues song (appropriate) about the trials andtribulations of keeping thin. And what a voice! Afterward, Rod O'Rileypresented some of the many important points that had been brought up atthe New Music Seminar earlier in the month.

Songsalive! Orange County Showcase – Mar. 15th - Local and not-local,old friend and new friend joined us in Orange County this time around, andthe results were great. First up was Jimi Yamagishi, joining us on our stagefor the third time, and as professional and well-seasoned a performer asever. With just him and his acoustic guitar, he had the crowd in the palm ofhis hand -- and they went nuts for it. Following Jimi we welcomed MerrillAmos, who is on tour from New York City. She made note of the fact thatthis was her first trip to California, and that we were her first performance onthe West Coast -- and we were certainly honored for that! It only madethings better that she is a great songwriter and a dynamic stage performer, even at the age of 21 -- or 22, the day after the show!

Songsalive! Orange County Showcase – Mar. 27th - Our monthlyworkshop was a bit larger this month than last, and this time around everyperson present gave us a new song to critique, making for two hours oflively discussion. A new face joined us this time: Glen Erickson, a writer offine country songs. His song "Text Message" was a great mixing of classiccountry sensibilities with a very modern context. Laura Suarez (who will bejoining us for our April Monthly Showcase) gave us a song of unrequitedlove that really displayed her impressive voice. Carlos Tabora presentedanother song of lost love, but much darker and more haunting. Continuingthe "theme", Kip Corley gave us an energetic song of love and loss. ThenRod O'Riley took things in a whole other direction with a science fiction songabout dog-people. Yes. And Craig Smetana had another set of lyrics lookingfor music -- this time, about helping those who have "fallen" in their lives.

SABRINA & CRAIG"Sabrina and Craig are a wonderfully talented acoustic musical duo who sing in perfect harmony from the heart. They finally have produced a new CD with many of their wonderful songs. Sabrina and Craig have such smart, playful, and wonderfully poignant and warm themes in their music. .... Congratulations Sabrina & Craig on your new CD and on being named, Songsalive! Member of the Month.

I admit to bias here as I have seen and enjoyed Sabrina and Craig play their songs for years. They are a wonderfully talented acoustic musical duo who sing in perfect harmony from the heart. They finally have produced a new CD with many of their wonderful songs. One Home..One Heart was recorded live in the studio to capture what is at the core of their music and vision. Sabrina and Craig have such smart, playful, and wonderfully poignant and warm themes in their music. Make You Mine is such a fun song – full of passion and romance – and a truly accomplished nod to Spanish Flamingo – between the masterful finger-style guitar work and the castanets. Cats and Dogs is almost a perfect folk song – a beautiful ballad with universal appeal.

Songalive! to offer

a special songwriters' camp

on April 17 As printed in the Los Feliz Examiner

www.examiner.com

by Bob Leggett

Songsalive!, one of the largest educational

organizations for songwriters and composers, will

be offering a special Songwriters Camp, to be

taught by co-founder Gilli Moon. The class will be

offered at the Finnish Center in North Hollywood

(10701 Magnolia Boulevard), from noon to 3 p.m.

on Sunday, April 17, 2011. RSVP ONLY at

www.meetup.com/songsalive.

The class is free to members of Songsalive!, but

costs $10 for non-members.

The program is an impactful, educational and

results-driven three-hour workshop that includes

an intensive, fast co-writing session with other

songwriters who attendees may or may have not

met, and probably never worked with before. The

result of the class is brand new, fabulous songs,

new songwriting relationships, and the knowledge

of the art of positive cooperation and co-writing.

Songwriters will be split into groups and then

asked to write a song in a short time period.

Completing a song in a short amount of time takes

discipline, cooperation and focus. Attendees will

also perform their songs to the full group during the

last quarter of the Workshop. The Songsalive!

Songcamp has been designed after many

journeys, learnings and collective thought by

Songsalive! president, Gilli Moon.

This is a lot of fun so bring your ideas and open

mind! Attendees also need to bring a few other

things:

1. Musical instruments. VERY important. Guitars

and keyboards are preferred as the best writing

tools. (If you don’t play an instrument, and write

lyrics, that’s ok.)

2. A packed lunch. (Snacks provided)

3. Pad and pencils

4. A creative and open mind

Please note there will be no song critiques for this

special Workshop. To learn more about the

Songsalive! Songcamps, go to

www.songsalive.org/songcamp and WATCH THE

VIDEO. It really takes you through what our

Songcamps are about.
