April 13 is a very special day at Soneva Kiri, it’s the day Thailand celebrates the Songkran Festival or Thai New Year. On this day Soneva Kiri is blessed by a monk with a Buddhist traditional ceremony.

Water is central to the holiday’s festivities, with fun games and of course, good food. April is the warmest month in Thailand, with the highlight of Sonkran being the country-wide water fight. It is customary for Thai people to roam the streets with buckets of water and water guns or they set up at the side of the roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. Although this is the part of Songkran known around the world it is not the only aspect of the holiday. Songkran is traditionally the time to visit and pay respects to your elders, which includes family, friends, neighbours and monks. It is also the time where Buddhist Thais unite with friends and family to visit temples and pay respect to Buddha, this is done by offering food and daily essentials to monks.

Join us to learn about, and take part in, traditions deeply rooted in Thai culture, as well as fun activities. We highly recommended that you keep your phone in a waterproof case for the day.
