Here are the highlights of SonarWiz enhancements for 2017 Q1 (January, February, March).

2.1 SonarWiz 7 news This is an informational preview of the newest SonarWiz, which was demonstrated at Ocean Business 2017. SonarWiz 7 is due for beta-release by July 1, 2017. Any new SonarWiz customer, or existing customer with a current EMA on their license key, can run SonarWiz 7.

1. SonarWiz 7 - fully integrated 3D viewer option supports display of post-processed imagery, or real-time imagery, for sidescan, sub-bottom, single-beam, or multi-beam data. 3D scene data selection is independent of the 2D map view content, but is visible right alongside it.

2. SonarWiz7 - Single-beam sonar is now supported for post-processing data import and real-time data acquisition, providing you with an inexpensive bathymetry option in SonarWiz.

3. SonarWiz 7 - sidescan data format is enhanced to full 32-bit floating-point resolution capability, making the import and view cycle easier than ever.

4. SonarWiz 7 - The new Properties window provides direct visual access to project and project explorer item settings and controls, visible at the top GUI level, without having to open a secondary dialog. Now see your project information, file information, adjust gains, and control 2D and 3D viewing of project data, directly in the new Properties window.

2.2 Bathymetry post-processing 1. We added initial support for importing Hypack HS2/HS2x bathymetry files. Start your project with HYPACK, but finish it with SonarWiz.

2. We added Natural Neighbor gridding algorithm for bathy gridding. This provides yet another gridding algorithm, which really helps compare survey and research results to other projects which used this algorithm.

3. Seabed Classification module now works with bathymetry backscatter data as well as sidescan amplitude data. Watch for news too, of a complete revision in the user-interface for seabed classification in SonarWiz 7.

2.3 Sidescan and sub-bottom post-processing

We added extensive file property discovery and information view, to numerous file types in both sidescan

and sub-bottom sonar categories. We added Sample Min/Max/Polarity property discovery and visibility to the SEGY, XTF, JSF, SES, and Simrad RAW file format readers. This data helps you make a more informed data polarity choice when importing sub-bottom data, for example.

2.4 Sub-bottom post-processing 1. The SBP digitizer bottom tracking ribbon menu now has an "Offset" button that will prompt for an offset value (in meters), then move the bottom track vertically by the specified amount. Get that bottom-track hugging the seafloor surface as exactly close as you want.

2. We've added initial support for Atlas Parasound SBP (.ACF) data file format. If you have an Atlas Parasound SBP, please try importing some of its data now in SonarWiz.

2.5 Magnetometry post-processing

When a user imports a magnetometer file that does not include a line name and then they set the option to label the mag lines in the plan view, we now present the mag file name as a line-tag in the map view. This really helps tell lines apart in a large survey.

2.1 SonarWiz 7 News - with Graphic Examples

2.1.1 New Integrated 3D Viewer

In addition to a classic 2D view of your sonar data, SonarWiz 7 provides a full integrated 3D viewer option, which supports display of post-processed imagery, or real-time imagery, for sidescan, sub-bottom, single-beam, or multi-beam data. 3D scene data selection is independent of the 2D map view content, but is visible right alongside it. You can zoom, pan, rotate, and vertically scale the scene data:



In a real-time scenario, you might dock a sidescan real-time mosaic, 2D real-time SS waterfall, and real-time 3D bathymetry viewer for watching the SS data and bathymetry point-cloud record, at the same time:



2.1.2 Single-Beam - New import and real-time support data format

Single-beam sonar is now supported is for post-processing data import and re-time data acquisition, providing you with an inexpensive bathymetry option in SonarWiz. The data imports easily, and color-scaled depth view is available in 2D or 3D:



2.1.3 High-resolution Sidescan Import Data Format Support

Sidescan data format is enhanced to full 32-bit floating-point resolution capability, making the import and view cycle easier than ever. As you can see below, the sidescan import dialog has been simplified to eliminate most of the gain controls



2.1.4 New PROPERTIES Dialog - Top-Level GUI Information View and Control

The new Properties window provides direct visual access to project and project explorer item settings and controls, visible at the top GUI level, without having to open a secondary dialog.

For the selected SS file above, you can see GENERAL information, and adjust GAINS, using the same dialog.



2.2 Bathymetry Post-Processing

2.2.1 Natural Neighbor Gridding Algorithm Added

Gridding is a great way to process bathymetry point-cloud data for alternate views. The natural neighbor gridding algorithm is a good one for filling small gaps, like if your survey proceeded a little faster than expected:

You just select GRIDS -> Create Grid in the project explorer, select DEPTH type and NATURAL NEIGHBOR algorithm:



And the resulting grid keeps the good depth characteristics of the point-cloud data, but fills in the gaps nicely, color-mapped to depths using the color window:

2.2.2 Seabed Classification - Addition of Backscatter Data Support

Seabed classification feature set is more in demand by habitat-mapping SonarWiz users these days, so we have enhanced support in 2 ways. In SonarWiz 6, the ability to use bathymetry backscatter data as an imagery source for performing seabed classification, as well as the previously supported sidescan imagery. Secondly, coming soon in SonarWiz 7 (preview below), the user-interface for seabed classification is being simplified and improved, for easier extraction of sensible results.

2.3 Sidescan / Sub-bottom Enhancements

Before you import sidescan files SonarWiz now provides a convenient PEEK function called PROPERTIES view:



You can learn before you try to import, what sidescan channels are populated in the file (e.g. channels 1/2 low-frequency, or channels 3/4 high-frequency, or both), the navigation format (e.g. X/Y or latitude/longitude), and this makes your import experience more informed, and likely to succeed, with less trial and error.

The same function is also available for sub-bottom file formats, where the very important DATA POLARITY choice can be made as an informed decision, rather than guessing, when you preview the file in PROPERTIES peek:



2.4 Sub-bottom-specific Enhancement - Bottom-track OFFSET Adjustment

Auto-tracking the bottom-track is a great feature, using blanking, duration, and threshold. If it does not hug the data visually exactly as you like it, just select OFFSET BOTTOM to adjust the entire track-line (red, below) to lower or raise it, and close those visual gaps with ease.
