There couldn’t be a better song to kick off this special CD than “ExprEss YoursElf.” It’s not only a great dance number, but it’s the message behind somewhere Else. Three years into his battle with cancer, Killian Mansfield, then 13, discovered the ukulele as a means of self-expression. playing music has since taken him “somewhere else”—including onstage with other musicians and most recently into the recording studio.
Around the time he started strumming his uke, he was also speaking out in medical conferences and to other children with cancer about the benefits of integrative therapies. Thanks to Hope & Heroes, the Integrative Therapies program at Columbia university Medical Center is able to provide support like acupuncture, visualization, massage, aromatherapy and herbal and nutrition counseling free to pediatric cancer patients and their families. This is a model program Killian feels has been a big help during his five-year battle with cancer. As he worked on his ukulele technique with ralph legnini, a musician, songwriter and producer, Killian and ralph hatched the idea
2
for this album. Why not enlist some of the musicians and their friends who make their home here in the Catskill Mountains, to record songs chosen by Killian that tie into the ideas behind integrative therapies? Thus, somewhere Else was born.
“It’s been a great experience making the CD,” Killian says, “and ralph really got it going. He knew one guy who knew another guy and so on. And it just shot like a rocket from there.”
“KIss,” according to Killian, is “one of the all-time greatest love songs,” and appropriately it got the ball rolling. Killian wanted to perform the prince number at his uncle’s wedding and at his ukulele lesson he played it for ralph. “I heard him sing it and he was great,” ralph remembers, “and I said, ‘I’ve got to record that,’ and I set up a mic. I did a quick mix. When he came back the next week for another ukulele lesson, I said, ‘let’s record some more songs,’ and Killian decided to choose songs that somehow reflect the tenets of integrative therapies. He only wanted to sing a couple of the songs so we talked about other singers, and I started asking others 3
to sing and play on the recordings. And some fantastic people stepped up to do it.”
Joining Killian on vocals is a diverse array of singers including Jay Collins, olabelle’s Amy Helm, and Amy’s dad levon Helm, who also played drums on a track; singer-songwriter John sebastian; B-52’s founding member Kate pierson; New orleans legend Dr. John; David Bowie band member Gail Ann Dorsey; Manhattan Transfer’s laurel Massé; singer-songwriter Jules shear; Jim Treutlein of the pontiacs; and longtime Woodstock favorites Bar scott, Dorraine scofield, Amy fradon, sham Morris, Molly farley, ralph legnini, KT legnini, and their daughter, lucia, and Killian’s mom Barbara Mansfield and sister Cally. Talk about a Catskill choir!
In addition to Killian’s ukulele and ralph’s mastery of everything from guitar to drums, other talented instrumentalists joined in on the musically diverse project: fiddle maestro Jay ungar and acoustic bassist Molly Mason, whose Ashokan fiddle & Dance Camp is where Killian first discovered ukulele, met laurel Massé (a teacher there), and learned 4
Irving Berlin’s “BluE sKIEs.” Chris Wood, of Medeski, Martin & Wood and the Wood Brothers played bass, as did original Gang of 4 member sara lee and frank Campbell (who’s played with The Band, among others). Tom Waits sideman ralph Carney lent his creative talents and various woodwind instruments (and wacky noises) to several songs. former Woodstock resident Todd rundgren contributed his guitar wizardry to Bowie’s “sTArMAN,” as did John Ashton of the psychedelic furs. Conan o’Brien band pianist scott Healy played keys and accordion, and pianists rob sabino (Chic; simon and Garfunkel) and bluesman Bruce Katz also tickled the ivories. A host of seasoned drummers put their beats on board: Eric parker (Bonnie raitt; Joe Cocker), Zachary Alford (David Bowie; Gwen stefani), randy Ciarlante (The Band), and Dennis Mackrel (Tony Bennett; Count Basie orchestra). If you stacked up all the albums these artists have played on, the pile would probably reach the top of Mt. Tremper!
“I’ve been able to put different musicians together who normally wouldn’t play together,” says ralph, “so that’s kind of cool in and of itself.”
5
As for the song selection, Killian thought of favorites, many of which reflected certain elements of integrative therapies. “I had a list of songs I wanted to play, like ‘GIrl froM IpANEMA,’“ Killian says. “I thought it sounded really beautiful on ukulele, and it fits the creative visualization theme—so does ‘sTArMAN.’ And ‘sCrATCH MY BACK’ is metaphorically all about helping me out and scratching places I can’t reach. That’s kind of like what integrative therapies have done for me. Everything from helping with pain and healing and just making me more comfortable in the hospital environment. They have this dance group called Cancer Dancers who reach out to other cancer kids through dance. so I wanted a dance song on the album—‘ExprEss YoursElf’ was it!”
Killian got his feet wet playing ukulele on stage over the past year and a half with uncle rock (a.k.a. robert Burke Warren) and the playthings, and one of his favorites from their sets is Warren’s “THErE’s lovE IN MY fooD.” “That song really hit the theme of integrative therapy’s ideas about getting good nutrition in the hospital,” Killian says. As for “fIsHING 6
BluEs,” Killian explains: “In acupuncture, there’s a feeling they call Da Qi and it’s the feeling when they put the acupuncture needle in your Chi channel, and it releases the Chi. They place it in the points where Chi is stuck, and as soon as it releases, you get a feeling as if you’re on a boat fishing and a fish grabs your hook and pulls it. It feels pretty much exactly like that.”
Killian’s mom, Barbara, wrote the gorgeous title track, “soMEWHErE ElsE,” specifically for her son’s album. “A lot of guys in the Catskills music community have been such mentors to Killian,” says Barbara. “ralph, uncle rock, Jay and Molly and their Ashokan fiddle & Dance Camp. There’s so much unique support for music here. This place reverberates with it. This is an amazing gift to the world straight from the heart of the Catskills.”

THE KILLIAN MANSFIELD FOUNDATION is a not for profit entity created to support and promote the use of integrative therapies for children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. These innovative therapies re-duce debilitating symptoms (such as nausea, stress and fatigue), thereby strengthening patients and their families. By expanding the treatment options available to medical practitioners and caregivers, patients and their families can focus on comfort and recovery. The current beneficiary of the Killian Mansfield Foundation is the Hope & Heroes Children’s Can-cer Fund, which sustains an excellent Integrative Therapies Program. HOPE & HEROES is a nonprofit charity that provides philanthropic assis-tance for children and their families battling pediatric cancer at Columbia University Medical Center. Proceeds of this CD will benefit one of our spe-cialized programs, The Integrative Therapies Program for Children with Cancer. The program provides free integrative therapies to all children and their families, as an aid in decreasing symptoms such as nausea, stress and fatigue. This is the first fully integrated program in the United States that has been recognized both nationally and internationally as a model for de-livering integrative services to children with cancer and their families. Cancer is just a disease. It doesn’t get to decide who I am or
how I deal with feeling sick. Conventional medicine does what it
can to cure cancer and other diseases, but sometimes the cure
feels brutal and elusive. Integrative therapies are important
because these practices are safe and available now to help
make people feel better. Like integrative therapies, making this
album with Ralph and all the other musicians has brought me “some-
where else”—beyond all this cancer business. I thank everybody who helped make this happen.
