We will review methods of treatment and the role providers have in helping the individuals that you support when they are experiencing depression. TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES & DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES: IMPACT ON FAMILIESAugust 23- Tuesday 9:00 - 11:00 amParticipants will learn how Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities(IDD) and traumatic experiences can disrupt development, emotionalregulation, family functioning and social engagement. Participantswill increase understanding of traumatic stress and learn the role ofprotective factors of individuals with IDD and their families throughan IDD-informed trauma lens. The training will explore screeningand referral options to appropriate trauma-informed services andtreatment. MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN ADOLESCENTS ANDYOUNG ADULTS WITH CO-EXISTING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERSAugust 31- Wednesday 9:00 - 11:00 amThis presentation will focus on recognizing mental health red flagsin adolescents and young adult populations with co-occuring de-velopmental disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is im-portant to distinguish autism from other co-occurring issues tosupport appropriate and accurate recognition, assessment, diag-nosing and treatment of conditions. Participants will gain under-standing of treatment modalities and methodologies that can beimplemented to address mental health specific symptomatology andyield positive outcomes for adolescents and young adults presentingwith ASD. ATTENTION PARENTS:Would you like to become a Parent Mentor? – You can learn how tosupport another family and increase your own knowledge and skillsabout systems of care for individuals with developmental disabilitiesand co-occurring mental health diagnosis. We are currently seekingparents who may be interested in joining our Parent Mentor Pro-gram as parent mentors.

The Parent Mentor Program provides support for parents of youngadults between 14 and 26 years of age. This is a critical age wherechildren are transitioning to adulthood, may begin to show mentalhealth symptoms, and seek more independence. The Parent MentorProgram will connect families with parent mentors who may offerparent-to-parent emotional and informational support.

This program includes training to become a parent mentor, workingwith other families, monthly continuing education, and mentorstipends. The 3-day training will be Saturday July 16th, 23th, and30th, 2016 from 9:30am to 3:30pm in the 3rd floor Boardroom.

We are offering New Therapeutic Support Groups for Parents ofChildren and Adults with Developmental Disabilities by MayraMendez, PhD, LMFT, Group Psychotherapist.

Research states that parents of children and adults with specialneeds may be experiencing feelings and symptoms of traumaticstress. Caring for children and adults with developmental disabili-ties can be overwhelming and stressful and parents sometimes re-port feeling isolated or dismissed. Dr. Mayra Mendez will helpparents learn how to redefine and manage the traumatic stress ofliving with your child’s disability and recharge your own internalresources to gain resiliency.
