SituationSomerton Randle is situated on the edge of Somerton which has a good range of local shops and services including butchers, a baker, beauticians, a health food shop, florist, small super market, dentist, surgery and a number of pubs. The larger centres of Sherborne and Wells are within 15 miles and provide a comprehensive range of services. There is a main line train station at Castle Cary (about 10 miles) with trains to London Paddington (1hr 25 mins). Trains also travel from Yeovil to London Waterloo (2 hrs 20 mins). The A303 is two miles south of Somerton and links to the M3 providing access to London by road (125 miles). Access to Bristol (35 miles), Bath (30 miles) and the West Country is via the A39, A37 and the M5; junction 25 at Taunton (19 miles) and junction 23 at Bridgewater (17 miles).

EducationSchools in the area include an infant and junior school in Somerton and a secondary school at Langport. There are preparatory schools at Hazelgrove in Sparkford, Millfield in Street, and Port Regis at Shaftesbury. Public schools include St Mary’s Shaftesbury, Sherborne Boys and Girls, Millfield, the Bruton Schools, Wells Cathedral School, Taunton and Downside.

RecreationThere are race courses at Wincanton, Bath and Salisbury; hunting is with the Mendip Farmers and Blackmore and Sparkford Vale. There are golf courses at Long Sutton, Wheathill at Lydford on Fosse, Yeovil, Sherborne and Wells. Taunton Polo Club has one of the oldest polo grounds located at Orchard Portman, just outside Taunton.

Historical NoteThe town of Somerton has been populated for over 2000 years having been the capital of Wessex in Roman times. Somerton Randle itself was built on an estate owned by the Pinney family who were merchants from Bristol. The Pinneys are thought to have purchased the land from William de Erleigh in 1783, hence the property originally being known as Somerton Erleigh. The house was built in the late 1700’s and extensively re modelled in the mid 1800’s with the additions of the Clock Tower and stables being completed in the Victorian period, about 1860. The estate remained in the ownership of the Pinney family for over 170 years during which time they developed extensive land drainage and water courses built of Blue Lias Stone. In 1962 they sold Somerton Randle and it was bought by the current owner in 1998.

Somerton RandleSomerton Randle is an exceptional Grade II listed Georgian country house protected by its own grounds. The house and all the ancillary accommodation have been extensively and sympathetically refurbished in the last decade, preserving and in some cases restoring the period features.

There are six reception rooms including an elegant drawing room with a George III Carrara marble fireplace, a morning room with hand painted wallpaper and a dining room with original decorative painted cornice.

OutbuildingsThe traditional buildings form three sides of a square and adjoin Clock Tower Cottage. They include; two garages with roller doors, a further open fronted four bay garage, stables, workshops and a swimming pool room. Separate and adjacent to the courtyard are three stables with a concrete apron.

Further down the back drive are two modern farm buildings (23m x 20m) constructed of steel frame and part block walling with sliding double doors.

Travelling south on the M5 leave at junction 23 and follow the A39 towards Glastonbury, Wells and Street. After about 7 miles turn right, signposted Berhill. Follow this road until you reach a crossroads with the B3151 and turn right. Continue through Compton Dundon and Littleton. As you approach Somerton continue under the railway bridge and over the River. Continue ahead and as the road leads up hill the gates to Somerton Randle are on the left hand side of the road before turning the corner.
