Happy Fathers’ Day!
Therese wasn’t always a nun nor was she al-
ways a saint. She was a regular little girl, who was ra-
ther sensitive. In fact, she seemed like a spoiled little
girl, who would stomp her feet and have a temper tan-
trum if she did not get her own way.
After the death of her mother, while Therese was
only 4, her father, who referred to her as “my little
queen” would give her anything she wanted to keep her
happy. At a young age, this precocious child wanted eve-
rything. She would get more than she bargained for. Sick
physically and emotionally, she was healed by Our Lady
of the Smile at the age of 11. She experienced a profound
conversion on Christmas Eve, 1886, at the age of 13. At
this time, she felt a call to enter Carmel as a contempla-
tive nun, so that she could give herself totally to Jesus.
But she was too young. Finally, at the age of 15, she was
allowed to enter.
Still dreaming of taking on the world doing
something extraordinary, she wrestled with her vocation
and place in the Church. Finally, she came to realize
that her “vocation is love.” The love of God was the en-
ergy source for the Church and fulfillment of the human
heart and longing. Despite her desire for the dramatic
and expansive, Therese developed a simple spirituality,
based on childlike trust and confidence in God. The spir-
ituality of her “little way” was not about extraordinary
things – but rather about doing simple things of life well
and with extraordinary love. She believed and taught
that “everything is grace” – God’s face and presence
could be experienced in every person and situation of
our lives, if we just attend with love and expectancy. She
died at the age of 24, believing that her life was really
just beginning for God, promising to spend her heaven
doing good on earth.

Si una florecita pudiera hablar, me pa-
rece que nos diría simplemente todo lo
que Dios ha hecho por ella, sin ocultar
ninguno de sus dones.
Therese Martin, la menor de nueve her-
manos, nació en Alencon, Francia, en 1873, de Louis y
Zelie Martin. Cuatro de los hermanos de Therese murie-
ron a una edad temprana; las cinco hermanas restantes
finalmente entraron todas al convento, tan profundo era
su llamado a la santidad. Cuatro se convirtieron en Mon-
jas Carmelitas en contemplación en Lisieux Carmel y una
se convirtió en hermana de las Visitaciones.
Therese no siempre fue una monja ni fue siempre
una santa. Ella era una niña normal, bastante sensible.
De hecho, parecía una niña malcriada, que pisaba fuerte
y daba un berrinche si no se salía con la suya.
Después de la muerte de su madre, cuando There-
se tenía solo 4 años, su padre, quien se refería a ella co-
mo “mi pequeña reina”, le daría todo lo que quisiera pa-
ra mantenerla feliz. A una edad temprana, esta niña pre-
coz lo quería todo. Obtendría más de lo que esperaba.
Enferma física y emocionalmente, fue sanada por Nuestra
Señora de la Sonrisa a la edad de 11 años. Experimentó
una profunda conversión en la víspera de Navidad de
1886, a la edad de 13 años. En ese momento, sintió la
llamada a entrar al Carmel como Monja Contemplativa,
para entregarse totalmente a Jesús. Pero ella era dema-
siado joven. Finalmente, a la edad de 15 años, se le per-
mitió ingresar.
Aún, soñando con conquistar el mundo haciendo
algo extraordinario, luchó con su vocación y su lugar en
la Iglesia. Finalmente, se dio cuenta de que su "vocación
es el amor". El amor de Dios fue la fuente de energía para
la Iglesia y la realización del corazón y el anhelo huma-
nos. A pesar de su deseo por lo dramático y expansivo,
Therese desarrolló una espiritualidad simple, basada en
la confianza infantil y la confianza en Dios. La espiritua-
lidad de su “pequeño camino” no se trataba de cosas ex-
traordinarias, sino de hacer bien las cosas sencillas de la
vida y con un amor extraordinario. Ella creía y enseñó
que "todo es gracia": el rostro y la presencia de Dios se
pueden experimentar en cada persona y situación de
nuestra vida, si solo atendemos con amor y expectativa.
Murió a la edad de 24 años, creyendo que su vida real-
mente estaba comenzando para Dios, prometiendo pasar
el cielo haciendo el bien en la tierra.
