BUCKY PIZZARELLI QUARTET $30.00 Wednesday 3/11 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Thursday 3/12 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary Jazz Guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli celebrates his 89thBirthday at Nighttown with All-Star Quartet featuring: BuckyPizzarelli-guitar, Martin Pizzarelli-acoustic bass, KonradPaszkudzki-piano, and Dag Markhus-drums.John 'Bucky' Pizzarelli (1926) began his professional career in 1943 at 17 years oldplaying in the Vaughn Monroe dance band. He toured and recorded with Monroethrough 1951, and in 1952 he joined NBC as a staff musician. At NBC, for manyyears, he played in the Doc Severinson Band on the Tonight Show. He also touredand recorded with Benny Goodman into the 1980's.

In New York, Pizzarelli worked mainly as a freelance musician in the studios and heappeared on many recordings as part of the rhythm section. One of the era's mostsolid rhythm players, Pizzarelli was in high demand to provide propulsion andbackground for other musicians.

His recordings as leader began to appear in the 1970's with recordings like GreenGuitar Blues. On this recording Pizzarelli established a pattern he repeatedthroughout his career. That is, playing and recording some of the great historicguitar compositions from the 1930's. On this recording he pays homage to CarlKress and Dick McDonough by including Chicken A La Swing. A few years later hepaid tribute to these two guitarists again on his Guitar Quintet LP. On April Kissesfrom 1999, he includes original music by Carl Kress, George Van Eps and GeorgeM. Smith.

Bucky Pizzarelli has carried forward other jazz guitar traditions as well.

His extraordinary skill as a rhythm player places him in the company of the great

Page 4: some money so we can keep prices low). Thislive.dev.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_2-2015.03.10.23.26.archive.pdf · Legendary Jazz Guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli celebrates his 89th Birthday

rhythm players like Freddie Greene and Barry Galbraith. And he has broughtforward the great chord solo tradition begun by George Van Eps and DickMcDonough. Like George Van Eps, Bucky Pizzarelli adopted the seven-stringelectric guitar (in fact, playing the Gretsch Van Eps model for many years). And,although this guitar is very popular today, for many years, Bucky Pizzarelli, wasconsidered the only guitarist next to George Van Eps, to play the seven-stringelectric guitar exclusively.

Along with being a dedicated preservationist of the old guitar music and the earlystyles of playing, Bucky Pizzarelli has also developed a very personal style that setshim apart. Recordings like Love Songs and NY Swing present a picture of thecomplete jazz musician and guitarist who moves effortlessly from the dauntingformat of the solo guitar to playing solid, swinging rhythm and single string solos inan ensemble setting.

APRIL VERCH$20.00 Friday 3/13 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Canadian National Fiddle Champion and vocalist combines Folk,Bluegrass, & Jazz.April Verch has never sounded more comfortable in her skin than she does now, inthe second decade of her career as an internationally touring Canadian fiddler, step dancer and singer/songwriter.

Her ninth album, Bright Like Gold, captures a woman who’s fleshed out her identityand is in full command of her gifts, a woman who’s grown from a prodigy into anenduring artist—one of music’s most unforgiving public transitions—with grace andgrit to spare.

The April Verch Band—rounded out by bassist and clawhammer banjo player CodyWalters and guitarist Hayes Griffin, who has a Masters in jazz improv from the NewEngland Conservatory— is an energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating outfit, notto mention one that’s not soon forgotten when they depart the stage. It doesn’thurt that the thrilling grand finale involves Verch fiddling and step dancing—andoften executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns—at once.

Verch, leader of this self-assured ensemble, is claiming her power as an artist anda woman, and taking charge of her recording process. Produced by Verch, Walters,Griffin, and their engineer Chris Rosser, Bright Like Gold is, quite literally, thealbum of Verch’s life.

It’s a wonder to behold Verch pulling off those pristine double-time triplets with herfeet, and the myriad other ways she’s made good on the promise she showed at atender age by becoming an artist in touch with roots and in her element. She won'tbe the one to mention her championship titles to you, or even the fact that sherepresented Canada's fiddling tradition by performing in the Opening Ceremoniesat the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. “The accolades are important and noteworthyand special to me,” she says, “but what I think is most impressive to me is that I’vebeen doing this full time since 2000. We make a living playing music that we loveand it touches other people. I feel like we’re extremely lucky to do that, but also Iwork really hard, not just at the music, but at every aspect of our career, to makethat happen. That we find a way to make it work, and have had that kind oflongevity, that's impressive to me.”

And rightfully so. Verch has perfected the art of winning fans for life.

YELLOWJACKETS$35.00 Saturday 3/14 8:00 pm Buy Tickets 10:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary Jazz Group live on the Nighttown Stage!Featuring: Russell Ferrante-pianos & keys, Bob Mintzer-sax, WillKennedy-drums, & Felix Pastorius-bass.A Rise In The Road, the Yellowjackets’ second Mack Avenue Records offering, isindeed an appropriate title for a time-honored jazz ensemble that has never beenfearful of facing newer musical horizons, not to mention the myriad challenges oflife itself. Throughout their storied 32-year history, the Yellowjackets haveundergone numerous lineup changes, never failing to rise to the inevitablechallenges of adjustment. Keyboardist Russell Ferrante and bassist Jimmy Haslip, the dual cornerstones of the group’s 21 previous recordings, were responsible fora sizable chunk of the Yellowjackets’ catalogue. Yet despite those shifts, Ferranteand Haslip, along with saxophonist Bob Mintzer (23-year member) and drummerWilliam Kennedy (14-year member, spread out between two different timeperiods), soldiered on with a professionalism that has resulted in 17 Grammy®nominations—with two wins—countless sold-out tours, and worldwide criticalacclaim.

Last year Jimmy Haslip announced he was taking a hiatus to focus on otherprojects and spend more time with his family. Alas, all things must come to an end,as he has decided to make his hiatus permanent. Although his leaving is seismicwithin the scope of the Yellowjackets’ history—“A Rise In The Road,” if you please—change is no stranger to this consistently innovative and adaptable collective. ARise In The Road introduces a new member—bassist Felix Pastorius—to replaceHaslip. Pastorius, whose last name is widely familiar to jazz aficionados, steps in tocontribute his talents to the group’s continuing sonic ventures (more on FelixPastorius in a moment).

In 2010, the Yellowjackets signed to Mack Avenue Records and in 2011 releasedTimeline, which reached #5 on Billboard’s jazz chart; the title cut receivedsubstantial national jazz radio airplay, making the song a staple on Billboard’s“Smooth Jazz Songs” chart. Now the Yellowjackets unveil A Rise In The Road, a 10-track study that burnishes the group’s sterling reputation for high quality tonalexplorations and ensemble execution.

Produced by Ferrante, Mintzer and Kennedy, A Rise In The Road stands shoulder-to-shoulder with their 21 previous efforts. “It’s about the challenges that peopleface in their lives and whatever path they are on: It’s not always smooth sailing, it’snot always a level road,” explains Ferrante, with regards to the project’s meaning.“Certainly, over the 32 years that we’ve been a band, we’ve had things come up,challenges such as musicians that have left the band, business people, relationships that you have built over the years. Things come to an end, and youhave to meet the challenge and keep going forward.”

Cochran is thrilled to bere-uniting with Abe, on the Nighttown stage.

Abe LaMarca

Northern soul music has been the driving and motivating musical force behind thispowerful vocalist since he was a teenager growing up in Cleveland Ohio in the late 60’s.He has recently returned back home after living and performing in Las Vegas where hewas privileged to work with “America’s Got Talent” Winner, Michael Grimm.

Abe LaMarca is also a proud member of the highly respected stable of singers andmusicians often referred to as the “Crown Jewel” of Las Vegas, Santa Fe and The Fat CityHorns.

Abe grew up on a steady diet of some sophisticated soul and jazz music well beyond hisyears. At the height of his young career as a local singer he was to land a huge gig withone of Cleveland's most memorable and popular horn bands, Rastus. At this time he wasschooled by tenor sax player, Vic Walkuski. "Whenever you started to feel cool and cockyabout how good you were, Vic would pull out some obscure soul record with theseamazing singers to knock you back down to earth. Most notable was an album by thegospel group "The Blind Boys of Alabama".

After leaving the band he spent some time in Los Angeles singing demos and working forsongwriters Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser. CHARLIE HUNTER TRIO $20.00 Sunday 4/19 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Innovative guitarist and Trio return to Nighttown: Featuring: Charlie Hunter-guitar, Bobby Previte-drums, & Carly Myers-trombone.

As a young guitarist growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Charlie Hunter waslooking for a way to stand out in the '80s. His primary influences were jazz greatJoe Pass and the fluid Tuck Andress (of the guitar/vocal duo Tuck & Patti), both six-string guitarists who were adept at blending bass notes into their standard guitarmelodies to make themselves sound like two musicians at once. But Hunterwanted to take it one step further, and set out to find an instrument on which hecould simultaneously function as both a guitarist and a bassist. For his self-titled1993 debut CD, Hunter played a seven-string guitar for the duality effect, lockingdown the bottom with drummer Jay Lane and mixing melodically with saxophonistDavid Ellis. But on his trio's 1995 sophomore release, Bing, Bing, Bing!, Hunterunveiled his custom-made Novax eight-string, the guitar that finally allowed him torealize his capacity. Designed by Ralph Novak, the instrument featured specialfrets and separate signals for its guitar and bass portions. Picking bass notes withhis right thumb while fretting them with his left index finger (while at the same timefingerpicking guitar chords and single notes with his right hand's remaining fourdigits as he frets with his left hand's other three fingers), Hunter achieves the realsound of two-for-one.

Hunter played with the side group T.J. Kirk in the mid-'90s, a band that derived theirname from the cover material they exclusively played: Thelonious Monk, JamesBrown, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Initially wanting to call themselves James T. Kirkbefore being threatened by the Star Trek TV and film series, T.J. Kirk released aself-titled 1995 debut and the 1996 follow-up, If Four Was One, before disbanding.Hunter took drummer Scott Amendola with him for his next project, an ambitiousinstrumental remake of Bob Marley's Natty Dread album in its entirety. Alsofeaturing saxophonists Kenny Brooks and Calder Spanier, the 1997 release beatthe odds by becoming arguably Hunter's best album. After Spanier died frominjuries sustained from being hit by a car, Hunter moved east to New York, takingAmendola with him. Teaming with vibraphonist Stefon Harris and percussionistJohn Santos, Charlie Hunter & Pound for Pound's 1998 CD Return of the Candymanis dedicated to Spanier. A departure from Natty Dread, mainly due to the work ofHarris, the disc featured a vibes-heavy cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle."

Hunter's modus operandi had now become shifting personnel changes, and inbetween tours. Charley’s new project includes Bobby Previte on drums, & CarlyMyers on trombone.

Trio of Tuvan Throat Singers from Siberia bring their unique and sensationalartistry to Nighttown stage!

Alash Ensemble is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tinyrepublic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei)developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains groundedin this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from theWest.

All members of Alash were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, firstlearning from their families, and later becoming students of master throat singers. In 1999, as students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a group called Changy-Xaya. They practiced in the damp college basement on Kochetovo Street, andsoon became the resident traditional ensemble on campus. At the same time theylearned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments, and listened to new trends coming out of America. Under the guidance of Kongar-ool Ondar (best known to western audiences for his role in the film Genghis Blues),they began to forge a new musical identity. They introduced the guitar andsometimes even the Russian bayan (accordion) into their arrangements, alongsidetheir traditional Tuvan instruments. They experimented with new harmonies andsong structures. The effect is an intriguing mixture of old and new.

The musicians are inspired by the music of their grandparents, great-grandparents, and the great musicians of Tuva and Central Asia. At the same timethey are influenced by such western artists as Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix. Yet theAlash musicians never sacrifice the integrity of their heritage in an effort to maketheir music more hip for an American audience. Rather they look forcontemporary ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvanmusic.

winning ABC-TV children's series Make A Wish.

Chapin was already firmly established as a performer and recording artist when hefirst branched out into family music with his 1988 album Family Tree. He's sincereleased twelve more family CDs aimed at post-toddler, pre-teen listeners andtheir parents, comprised of original songs addressing such issues as family life, positive self-image and respect for the environment.

"When I was hosting Make A Wish, people had suggested to me many times that Iought to make a 'children's record,' which to me meant singing songs for toddlersabout little duckies and didn't seem particularly interesting," Chapin explains."Then I had children, and when they were eight and six, I realized that there wasnot a lot of music for that age group. They understood language and story andhumor, but were too old for toddler music and too young for rebellion and lovesongs. So I did Family Tree with that in mind, and it won all kinds of awards.Suddenly I had a new career as a family artist."

Chapin's latest family release is The Incredible Flexible You, a collection of 12 newsongs that help young listeners navigate the tricky waters of social interaction. It'sA Songbag of Social Clues. Each tune is designed for preschool and earlyelementary children with social cognitive challenges, and their parents andteachers, too. It has received a 2013 Parents’ Choice Gold Award, a Family ChoiceAward, a Mom’s Choice Gold Award and a Creative Child CD of the Year Award."Writing family music," he observes, "has been a wonderful course in songwriting. You have a dual agenda: keep it understandable and fun for kids, but well-writtenand intelligent and musical enough to keep adults listening as well. Within theseparameters, we've found an enormous amount of topics and approaches andmusical feels that continue to excite us to keep coming back and doing it again."

Chapin also serves as narrator of a series of children's books, three of which havewon GRAMMY awards in the Best Spoken Word Album for Children category.
