Some facts about R.K Narayan:

Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami was born on 10 October,1906 in Madras now Chennai.

He was a teacher. He started his writing career with short

stories, which appeared in the ‘The Hindu’. Most of his stories are set in South India. His stories are mostly about ordinary

life and has lot of humour. Most of his stories were brought to life by

his brother, the famous cartoonist R.KLaxman.

He won numerous awards and adulations during his lifetime. These include the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958, the Padma Bhushan in 1964, Film Fare Award for Best Story in 1967, the AC Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature in 1980, besides the Padma Vibhushan in 2000.

Narayan played an exceptional role in making India accessible to the outside world through literature.

Did you know?Malgudi is a fictional town in South India in the novels and stories of R.K. Narayan. It is said that he combined the first two letters of the two prominent old areas of Bengaluru – Malleswaram (Mal) and Basavanagudi (Gudi).
