Page 14 Dear friends,
It’s amazing how the months just continue to fly by. With the changing of the seasons, we’ve also seen many changes here at the center. By
the time that this newsletter is printed, we are in hopes that our parking lot will be near completion. We want to thank everyone for your
patience during this time. Finding a place to park lately has been nearly impossible and we know it’s been a pain, but we’ve heard very few
complaints and for that I thank you! The additional 60 spaces will be awesome and I’m so excited to see it finished!
Many of you have asked what is going on in the back of the building behind the dining room. As you may have noticed, there has been some
digging up back there as well. Franklin Darnell is a young Eagle Scout and he had a vision of what he wanted to do for his Eagle Scout
Project. His vision was to honor Veterans! How wonderful is that!?? Franklin designed a beautiful Veteran’s Memorial and approached me
with his idea. Having a son in the Marines now for over 11 years…and working with many Vets over the years, how could I possibly not think
this was a great idea! After receiving approvals through the County and through his Scout Leaders, Franklin is now responsible for
organizing and coordinating this awesome project. His plans include a 20x20 cement slab that will include a lighted flagpole, cement
benches, and a monument that will honor our Vets! I am personally hoping that his project will be completed by our Veteran’s Day
Celebration, scheduled for November 8th. (For more information regarding our Veteran’s Day Celebration, please see inside for full details).
Three cheers to Franklin and his efforts in making this dream a reality!
Be sure to join us as we as a “Senior Center Family” pull together to support our dear friends Jutta and Rick Ogle. Many of you know Jutta
our Kitchen Manager…her husband Rick was diagnosed with cancer several months ago. Rick is not able to work anymore due to his illness.
Jutta continues to work to pay for her insurance benefits, but their medical bills continue to climb. The senior center staff, friends, and
family felt that we wanted to make a difference and help them with their financial needs. We have decided to throw a huge benefit dinner and
auction on October 12th!! We might not be able to make much of a difference alone, but together as a family we can make a HUGE
difference!! Please open your hearts and attend this event. We will be serving a delicious Baked Ziti Dinner, holding cake walks, baffle
raffles, and our main event will be an unbelievable LIVE AUCTION with loads and loads of great items!! Start your Christmas shopping early
while supporting your friends!! Dinner tickets are only $5.00 per person. Be sure to stay for the entire evening as we lift
this family up and help them any way we can! The entire community is invited to attend this event!!
HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL MONTH!!
Love, your friend,
Jane
News From Judy
Top 10 reasons why older adults should exercise
6-10 Next Month
1. To increase bone density and prevent Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects some 20 million women & 5 million men and leads to more than 250,000 hip fractures each year. Exercise delays the onset of Osteoporosis by increasing bone strength.
2. To improve self-efficiency and maintain independence. One of the top concerns is becoming dependent or a burden to someone. Exercise helps older adults maintain a greater capacity to undertake the activities of daily living.
3. To increase metabolism. Strength training increases muscle mass, which elevates metabolism. This may also lead to a reduction in overall body fat percentage.
4. To maintain balance and improve reflexes to decrease falls. As we age there is a natural decline in balance & coordination, which can be postponed and even prevented with proper strength and balance training.
5. To create a sense of community or feeling of belonging. Exercise groups enhance social interactions. New friendships are also stimulated during group exercise gatherings.

FRIENDS
A friend is like a flower,
a rose to be exact,
Or maybe like a brand new gate
that never comes unlatched.
A friend is like an owl,
both beautiful and wise.
Or perhaps a friend is like a ghost,
whose spirit never dies.
A friend is like a heart
that goes strong until the end.
Where would we be in this world
if we didn't have a friend.
I just want to take time to THANK every single
one of you here at the center; seniors and staff
for everything!
Thank you for the baby shower last month, but
most of all thank you for being a friend of mine.
All of you have a special place in my heart! Some
of you I know and have known for a long time
now, others I'm just getting to know, but
overall...all of you are like family to me and I
love each and every one of you!! (I didn't write this poem, but thought it was appropriate)
LOVE,
Ashley
