Develop a set of Discipleship Practices1. Identify core values through group discussion,

prayer, & reflection. – The values that really grab the community. – This process requires that you identify the values &

beliefs that are non-negotiable & inspire passion. – It might take some time

Develop a set of Discipleship Practices2. Establish your minimum discipleship standards.

Page 9: Som 104-03 discipleship vs the academy

Develop a set of Discipleship Practices3. Brainstorm the different ways these norms &

values can be practiced in everyday life. – It is important that the group identify everyday

things, not just “religious” activities, with the practices. • Eg. The core value of hospitality might be expressed in

eating regularly with Christians & non-Christians or in regularly having the poor in your home. Eating is thus transformed into a culture-making, mission activity. List many possible ways a core value can be embodied.

Develop a set of Discipleship Practices4. Choose only 1 or 2 key practices for each. – Make sure they’re achievable & realistic while still

raising the bar on the discipleship. – The practices should require some discipline &

commitment.

Develop a set of Discipleship Practices5. Develop a memorable acronym or simple way to

phrase the practices. – This is very important, because if they are not easy to

remember, people won’t practice them.– Eg.• Third Place Communities TPC• Small Boat Big Sea BELLS• RED TEMPT• MMBC ?????

OUTWARD Palayo Make disciples of all nations

• This could also reflect our attitude toward those outside, such as loving, serving, proclaiming, etc. Should it reflect a missional approach.

• Diakonia – Regular engagement with the world sharing faith,

ongoing conversations, exploring issues, deepening relationships

• Marturia – Care for the world • pursuing justice & mercy, care for creation, poverty &

prosperity

Page 15: Som 104-03 discipleship vs the academy

UPWARD Paitaas• Worship – eliminate sacred vs secular

• Kerygma – Make Jesus king of his kingdom / do kingdom work

Proclamation of Jesus Christ as king. • Or should this focus on our humility in light of the

greatness of God. So rather than upward, should we say something like “acknowledges God” Recognises God. Submits to God. Submissive. Subordinate. Dependent.

the knowledge of the glory of god shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea

Develop a set of Discipleship Practices6. Expect a common commitment to the practices

from all stakeholders. – Be careful of legalism, – don’t lower the bar to simply suit middle-class

sensibilities. – These practices should entice & challenge us.
