The Origins of the ProblemsThe Origins of the Problems

I’m a huge believer in centralized management of

– The device – The OS– The applications – User’s environment

My ultimate goal is to make the end-users life easier through IT but NOT at the cost of additional IT pain and hard costs.

Each have its own management overlay

In today’s world we manage in silos, from the server down

Shouldn’t the goal be:

No matter what type of computer you give the end-user have the same experience?

I like to create the analogy between this type of management philosophy and a TVs philosophy.

– Turn it on and there are the channels. – I’ve been all over the world and the experience is the

same – I don’t know nor do I need to know anything that is

going on in the background as it does not pertain to my task as an end-user.

Why can’t we compute this way too?

To summarize:– We have a problem supporting the end-user. – We need a solution to tie the environment together, but one

that does it by putting the end-user first

In most organizations:– End-users find themselves computing through

numerous devices from many different locations– Their world consists of an office or cubicle that has a

desktop computer and some of their applications are delivered through a Terminal Server, some are local to their desktop and some are web based.

– When the end-user then leaves their workspace, they pickup a laptop and or compute from their home computer or a kiosk

All provide a similar but different experience

Typical Solutions:– Administrators implement numerous utilities and

scripts to try to create as close to a unified experience as possible

– This creates more overhead, higher costs and ultimately more of a static environment

– Environment build is buried in the heads of a few administrators

End-user still faces the same pain

The company is left with higher costs due to the loss of productivity resulting from the lack of uniformity and increased time to market and overhead

To see how it affects the end-user, let’s look at a view of the end-users environments.

Workstation end-users have access to: – Local applications – Softricity SoftGrid applications – Citrix and TS applications

This workstation also consists of numerous configuration settings:

– mail profile– Applications– Printers– local and remote drives– database connections– much, much, more

To take a look at the administrator’s view of each of these environments would be an impossible task as this would require looking at a slew of consoles, scripts and registry entries.

In my quest for a solution to these problems, I was introduced to a company by the name of Real Enterprise Solutions

I was quick to realize that they were looking at the same problems as I am

Their goal is to develop a solution to manage the end-users first which ultimately manages the rest of the environment seamlessly the way it needs to be

I am excited about the paradigm they bring to the previous mentioned problems

If we take a look at the administrator’s view of each of these environments, we can see all of the settings across all three types of possible deployment scenarios are identical

Now this is what I call, Unified Management
