WARM – UP!!
As you walk in, pick up your calculator!!We will discuss your tests as your warm-up today, so wait for Ms. Rhoads to give your tests back!!

When “solving” an equation for a variable, we are trying to ‘isolate’ that variable – get it by itself

EXAMPLE 1: 9X – 7 = 7
Questions to consider:
• What are we doing to x?
• The second thing?
• How do you undo these steps?

You Try!
1. 5m + 16 = 51 2.
3. -1 = 4.

PRACTICE
Begin your practice problems in your guided notes booklet! Be sure and ask if you have any questions!
![Page 12: SOLVING ONE AND TWO STEP EQUATIONS. WARM – UP!! As you walk in, pick up your calculator!! We will discuss your tests as your warm-up today, so wait for.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070605/5a4d1af47f8b9ab059980517/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
WARM UP!! *Get your calculator as you are walking in!*
Solve the following one and two step equations:
1. - 8p = 64
2. 18 + 3c = 27
3. 15 + m = 17
4. - 19 = 6z - 5

MULTISTEP EQUATIONS• Our goal for multistep equations is the same as one and two step : we are trying to isolate the
variable.
• What is different about multistep?
• More than one “x” Case 1: Two “x”s on the same side
A. Combine like terms B. Solve like a one/two step equation
Example 1: -20 = -4x – 6x
![Page 14: SOLVING ONE AND TWO STEP EQUATIONS. WARM – UP!! As you walk in, pick up your calculator!! We will discuss your tests as your warm-up today, so wait for.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070605/5a4d1af47f8b9ab059980517/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
MULTISTEP EQUATIONS• Case 2: “x”s on both sides
A. Move one of your variables to the other side. REMEMBER: use opposite operations Helpful Hint: typically it is easier to move smaller “x”.
Example 2: 8x – 2 = -9 + 7x
![Page 15: SOLVING ONE AND TWO STEP EQUATIONS. WARM – UP!! As you walk in, pick up your calculator!! We will discuss your tests as your warm-up today, so wait for.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070605/5a4d1af47f8b9ab059980517/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
EXAMPLE 3: 5 + 2(Y+4) = 5(Y-3) + 10
![Page 16: SOLVING ONE AND TWO STEP EQUATIONS. WARM – UP!! As you walk in, pick up your calculator!! We will discuss your tests as your warm-up today, so wait for.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070605/5a4d1af47f8b9ab059980517/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
• You will NOT always get a number for an answer. Other than a real number, there are two possible solutions you could have:
1. All Real Numbers
2. No Solution
Example 4: 6(4+y) = 5(y-3) +10Example 5: 3(a+1) -5=3a - 2

TRY THESE!!
1. 6x-3 = 2x +13 3. 3n +1 + 4n = 7n – 5 +6
2. 9x + 7 = 3x – 5 4. 8 – 2(y+1) = -3y + 1
