Generals

Why electronic ballasts?The electronic ballast became the standard in the lighting industry. Itleads to significant energy and money savings in nearly every appli-cation. The lamp operation is flicker free and the ballast produces vir-tually no noise or hum.

The incoming 50/60 Hz power (115 or 230 volts) is converted to high-frequency AC (usually 20 to 40 kHz). This leads to a constant gasdischarge compared to conventional ballasts and prevents cathodeflicker.

Electronic ballasts are more efficient than magnetic ballasts in con-verting input power to the proper lamp power. The operation of uv-lamps at higher frequencies reduces end losses, resulting in anoverall lamp-ballast system efficacy increase of 15% to 20%.

Electronic ballasts are directly interchangeable with magnetic bal-lasts. They operate with most of available uv-lamps. Long termusage has demonstrated the reliability of electronic ballasts.

Electronic ballasts that operate two or four lamps at once, are allo-wing the use of a single ballast in systems with several lamps. Thisreduces installation and field wiring costs. Other advantages arereduced weight, quieter operation and reduced lamp flicker.

Electronic ballasts basically consist of the following functional units: filter - EMI-filter to attenuate conducted RF noise rectifier PFC (power factor correction) - provides sinusoidal line

current charging capacitor frequency controller (for high-frequency conversion) power stage resonant tank

and also fault logic (open-circuit / short-circuit protection)

Operation Modes of Electronic Ballasts

Preheat start ballasts (-PH)

These ballasts are also used for lamps with four-pin connection.

Preheat ballasts provide a preheat current at the filaments thatallows the electrode to heat up before ignition. During the preheatinterval, voltage across the lamp drops to a level that reduces theunwanted glow current. The ballast applies sufficient voltage to theelectrodes, long enough for the electrode to reach the emissiontemperature to prevent lamp ignition before the electrodes areheated up.

After the end of programmed time for preheating, the ballast app-lies a voltage across the lamp to ignite it with minimal loss of emis-sive material. This optimizes the lifetime of the lamp.

These ballasts are intended for applications with many switch oncycles.

We offer preheat start ballasts on request for lamps with aminimum power of 200W (see the PH in the type name).

Rapid start ballasts

These ballasts are used for lamps with four-pin connection.

During startup a short high current pulse is sent to the lamp fila-ment. This reduces unwanted sputtering of emissive material at theelectrodes.

Compared to instant start ballasts, lamps tend to live longer withrapid start ballasts, in case of many on-off cycles. So rapid startballasts are recommended when the switching cycle for the lampsis more than three times per day.

During operation current is flowing through the lamps filament. Theelectrodes of the lamps must fit with this ballast type.

Instant start ballasts (-IS)

These ballasts are used for lamps with two-pin connection (see theIS in the type name).

Instant start ballasts ignite lamps by applying high voltage acrossthe lamp during setup. The high voltage typically ignites the lampimmediatly. These ballasts do not heat the electrodes.

Instant start ballasts should be used for continously lamp operationwith less than three switches per day. The advantage is the lowerwiring effort compared to four-pin connection.

Instant, rapid or preheat?

There are three modes of operation of the lamps:

The socket is allowed up to 100W/1A.Wire must be solid or top coated stranded copper wire. Solder dipped is not recommended. Strip length: 1,1...1,25cm. Wire leads to be fully inserted into wiring port, ensuring uninsulated end of wire is not exposed. Use wire end ferrules with a length of 12mm. We recommend crimping pliers with square crimping e.g. KNIPEX KN975304.
