GROWING WITH EILAT Hitachi plays an active role in the expansion of a popular Israeli town

THE SUCCESS OF an urban environment relies on a strong infrastructure and Eilat is no exception. Hitachi ventured to the Red Sea to meet the versatile construction company, S Noufi and Sons, and establish what part it is playing in the town’s ongoing growth and development.

Eilat is a busy port and holiday resort, situated at the southern tip of Israel and the northern tip of the Red Sea. Home to almost 60,000 people, the town is part of the Negev Desert, adjacent to the Egyptian village of Taba and the Jordanian port of Aqaba.

The arid desert climate is moderated by Eilat’s close proximity to warm sea. Temperatures often exceed 40°C in summer and 20°C in winter, while the water is always over 20°C. The city’s beaches, nightlife and desert landscapes also make it a popular destination for domestic and international tourism.

The tourist trade first came to prominence in the Seventies and became increasingly important to the city’s economy when it was authorised as a free trade zone in 1985. Over the past thirty years, tourism has helped to quadruple the population in Eilat and it is now the town’s major source of income. Counting tourists and other visitors, there are as many as 150,000 people in town during high season.

The expansion of Eilat has necessitated an upgrade in the town’s infrastructure and the construction of hotels and other holiday attractions to accommodate and entertain the visitors. Fortunately, the upturn in the tourist trade coincided with the arrival of construction company, S Noufi and Sons, more

than three decades ago. The family-run firm was established in 1976 in Haifi, 85km north of Tel Aviv, by the late Samaan Noufi. He was soon joined by his three sons, Marwan, Sami and Raed.

The brothers still manage the business and share all of the responsibilities: Marwan is the General Manager; Sami is the Finance Manager; and Raed is the Projects Manager. In addition, the third generation of Noufis has already started working with their fathers.

Raed’s first project was the construction of the Club Hotel Eilat in 1981. Due to the relatively small size of the resort, this was the area’s largest construction project at that time. It was completed to a high standard and in advance of the deadline. As a result, S Noufi and Sons’ newly established high profile in the community propelled the company on to the tender list for future projects.

Following this success, Raed made a permanent move to Eilat in 1983. Two years later, a huge rainstorm resulted in extensive flooding. The mayor asked the company to help and work through the night as part of the salvage operation.

The professional approach adopted by S Noufi and Sons in Eilat’s hour of need meant that the company was then considered for all future municipality projects. It is now the main supplier to local government, especially for drainage work.

In 2002, it started on a new housing development and went on to construct over 150 apartments in

the following six years. This part of the business has expanded since then and an additional 300 properties were built between 2008 and 2010. This was due to the increased demand for residential and private investment properties.

S Noufi and Sons today employs 261 people and specialises in a wide range of industry solutions— general construction, infrastructure, utilities, cement, quarrying and marine work. The most significant part of the business varies annually, but it was new housing development and road construction that generated the most income during 2011.

The most recent construction project started in 2009, with 141 apartments and 16 villas due to be completed by March 2012. S Noufi and Sons is utilising its newly acquired fleet of Hitachi construction machinery on the project to complete the earthmoving, groundworks, utilities, landscaping and road construction work.

The wide range of mini and medium crawler and wheeled Zaxis excavators were supplied by the Israeli dealer, CMD. The two companies have been working together since S Noufi and Sons was founded, the relationship having developed through the parts and servicing of the contractor’s construction machinery.

The ZX16-3, ZX18-3, ZX29U-3 and ZX350LC-3 were delivered to Eilat in July 2011. The ZX190W-3 and a

second ZX350LC-3 followed a month later. S Noufi and Sons holds a stock of Hitachi consumable parts, and orders other components direct from CMD for next-day delivery from Tel Aviv. CMD also flies a technician down to Eilat on a regular basis to carry out routine maintenance work.

“CMD offers a ‘hot’ service,” smiles Raed. “They are excellent suppliers of construction machinery, parts and service, and visit us at least once a month in support of our operations. There is no doubt that we have a strong working relationship. We like the personal service offered by CMD and feel very close to them.”

Sales Manager, Avi Levy, and Key Account Manager, Moshe Schomer, are CMD’s main points of contact for Raed. The companies have known each other for many years, but Raed’s wife has also played a part in the decision to buy the new Zaxis machines.

“The attraction to Hitachi is like a love story,” jokes Raed, “as my wife likes the orange colour of the machines! However, we also know that Hitachi is a huge brand and all of the products are excellent from the minis up to the giant mining machines.

“We’re extremely satisfied with the Zaxis excavators and the technology now at our disposal. They are impressively fast, responsive and smooth to operate, especially the ZX190W-3.

“This model is close to my heart, as I started my career as an operator of a wheeled excavator. It is so versatile and many problems can be solved with just one machine. Overall, the medium excavators are already saving the company up to 40 per cent on fuel consumption.”

A tour of the new apartments and villa site reveals the ZX29U-3, ZX190W-3 and ZX350LC-3 working in unison to keep the development on schedule. Raed introduces the operators, who explain in enthusiastic detail how their first experience of Zaxis excavators has transformed their daily routines.

The ZX29U-3 is clearing an area adjacent to some of the new buildings, with Ali Camel in the driving seat. “It is strong, fast and easy to use, particularly when moving earth,” he says. “It’s just the right size for this type of work, which underlines its versatility. The cab is very quiet, the air conditioning is perfect and it is a wonderful machine to operate.

“When I saw it for the first time, I didn’t believe that it would be up to the tasks that it is able to do around the site. I have previous experience of operating backhoe loaders, so I was really surprised by the overall performance of this mini excavator.”

It’s hard to keep track of the ZX190W-3 wheeled excavator, operated by Omar Haldi, as it moves from job to job around the site. “The cab is very

comfortable and I like the ergonomic design of the control panel,” he explains. “There is an excellent all-round view of the site, especially with the use of the rear-view camera.

“The engine is very strong and I like to work with the blade. The ZX190W-3 is fast, responsive and operates smoothly. There is nothing that I am unable to do with this incredibly versatile machine on new housing developments such as this.”

Mohammed El Kdor is at the helm of the ZX350LC-3, loading soil into 12m³ trailers in an average time of four minutes. “Everything is going well with this machine and I love working with it,” he enthuses. “It’s fast, smooth, stable and easy to operate. The air conditioning works really well and I enjoy listening to music in such a quiet cab.”

It’s difficult to assess what the future holds for S Noufi and Sons. Much will depend on the success of new tenders, such as the one for a new airport, 20km outside Eilat, and another for a factory at a local copper mine. However, with the wide range of industry solutions within its portfolio and an efficient and productive fleet of construction machinery at its disposal, the company looks set to continue growing with Eilat under the heat of the desert sun.

JOHN DEERE DOZERS JOIN THE RANKS

John Deere 450J bulldozers delivered to the Australian Defence Force

ARTICLES

THE ENGINEERING VEHICLE Program, which forms part of the Combat Support Vehicle Systems Program Office, specialises in the replacement of plant equipment, cranes, and forklifts. Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) initially delivered four John Deere 450J bulldozers to the Construction Squadron at Holsworthy Barracks. The supply of the twenty-one unit contract has taken place over the past few months with the final delivery of nine units scheduled for May 2012.

The 450J bulldozers have undergone serious modifications to meet specific safety, quality and capability requirements of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The integration of a split cabin allows the 450J to be loaded and despatched from a C130 transport plane and Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, and the addition of separate lift, recovery and tie down points assists in machine transportation.

A robust design enables the machine’s blade and ripper pivot points to withstand 20g (g-force) vertical loads. The 450J undercarriage has been strengthened to endure 20g vertical loads in landing, and has the ability to accommodate a 4g horizontal load in extraction from a C130 aircraft.

Incorporating the latest in military grade technology, the 450J bulldozers include an in-cab weapon rack, disruptive-pattern camouflage paint and a specialised facility for the integration of ADF communication equipment. Additional 360° lighting with blackout lighting capabilities allow for night time operational activities to be undertaken in warzone environments.

The demand for specialised attachments is in response to performance expectations of the machines on the battlefield. The capability of the 450J is fundamental to the military’s battlefield

functions including mobility, counter-mobility, survivability and sustainability. The machines are usually deployed in conjunction with other plant equipment to conduct operational tasks such as road construction, airfield construction, repair and disaster relief (e.g. fire, cyclone, flood). This is in addition to general construction and maintenance associated with both domestic and international defence operations.

According to Jane Watts, Project Manager of the Defence Materiel Organisation, “The addition of the 450J bulldozers provides efficient in-service

compatibility with our existing John Deere 850J units. The machines have exceeded expectations in their ripping and pushing capabilities due to the high torque engine, which increases traction and productivity. The unique ‘Hill Hold’ feature has also proved critical in helping maintain positive control on varied slope applications as well as providing a safety element.”

A state of the art transmission and an infinitely variable track control allows operators to change the speed of each track for smoother more powerful turns.

The counter rotation of the bulldozer tracks enables operators to overcome heavy corner loads and quickly reposition the blade on the move. The 450J has a power-to-weight ratio advantage over other manufacturers that allows the machine to work more effectively while conserving fuel during grading applications.

The 450J has received high praise from ADF authorities based on a six month evaluation. The supply of these dozers has fulfilled a need by the Commonwealth to replace existing in-service capability currently used by the Combat Engineer Regiments and Construction Squadrons within the Army.

Based on historical performance, HCA has demonstrated its ability to offer ‘whole of life support’ through an extensive national branch

network strategically positioned in important Defence locations.

According to Keith Bailey, Government Business Manager for HCA, “The relationship between the ADF and HCA over a long period of time has been a positive and constructive partnership. This longevity and experience with Defence contracts places HCA in a position that enables great understanding of the rather unique and special Defence requirements in both the machine supply and integrated logistic support process.”

Training and ADF tailored manuals are a key component of the 450J contract. The first stage of training activities commenced in early March and regional operator training is scheduled for completion in July 2012.

JAYDO GAINS TRACTIONJaydo expands fleet with new 333D compact track loader

JAYDO CONSTRUCTION IS a leading pipeline and water infrastructure construction specialist, earning its strong reputation by delivering quality projects on time and within budget. Jaydo is a privately owned business with generations of experience and a dedicated workforce that takes a hands-on approach to their projects.

Jaydo has experienced engineers, supervisors, plant operators, pipe specialists and site personnel. In addition, they have a large fleet of construction plant and equipment to perform these projects in Victoria and mobile teams operating throughout Australia.

According to Jaydo Construction’s Managing Director, Dirk de Haan, “Jaydo had recently purchased the new 333D compact track loader for its individual features and its ability to fulfil some unique site requirements faced by the construction team.

“We were always happy with the performance of our three John Deere mini loaders, however I wouldn’t make an investment decision like this without investigating all options on the market,” said Dirk.

The team went out into the market, extensively researching current equipment and assessing performance, safety and suitability to the team’s individual needs.

The team at Jaydo chose the John Deere 333D compact track loader based on a combination of reasons. Its impressive compaction and ability to backfill to the required density index ensures the project team can precisely meet design requirements.

“There is a lot of upside in utilising the John Deere 333D compact track loader, particularly maximising efficiency when performing a combination of other duties,” said Dirk.

The exceptional breakout force of the machine combined with stability makes it extremely efficient in its operation. Another aspect that has impressed operators is the John Deere power. “It can plough straight through a ten cubic metre load of dumped sand without stalling or bogging down. This enables quick truck unloading cycle times and efficient backfilling of open trenches. A normal wheel loader does not have this pushing power and would be bogged in this type of application,” added Dirk.

Safety was a major consideration by Jaydo. The 333D has excellent vision, which is extremely important to operators in maintaining a safe working environment, particularly for others working in and around the area.

Other benefits the team has seen from the machine include cost effective maintenance and the open track system makes cleaning quick and easy —a priority when moving between sites.

As indicated by Dirk, operator feedback has been really positive. “The 333D is quiet, comfortable and maintains a fresh environment inside the cabin. This in turn maintains good operator focus on work and reduces potential for fatigue during long periods of operation.”

Since the arrival of the 333D, Jaydo site personnel have been extremely satisfied with all aspects of its operation and capability. The machine has proven itself as a highly useful tool of choice in the construction equipment fleet.

For many years, Jaydo have had an excellent relationship with the representatives at Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia when making decisions based on machinery requirements.

“We appreciate Hitachi’s assistance and frontline approach in establishing individual needs for the unique projects we undertake. Product knowledge and market insight helped facilitate the decision to purchase this track mounted loader,” said Dirk.

DEERE FLEET HITS THE ROADEleven John Deere 770GP graders delivered to Roads and Maritime Services

HITACHI CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY AUSTRALIA (HCA) is strengthening its business relationship and continuing its support of the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS - previously known as the RTA) state-wide project requirements.

HCA has successfully negotiated a long-term contract for the initial supply of eleven John Deere 770GP motor graders with an inclusion of a fully maintained Service Level Agreement for three years covered by a fully Operational Lease Arrangement. This addition to the RMS fleet of construction machinery demonstrates its confidence in HCA’s ability to support its major project contracts in accordance with RMS regional requirements.

The fleet of graders will be delivered to various regional areas within New South Wales including Dubbo, Broken Hill, Narrabri, Narrandera, and Bowenfels (Lithgow). According to Keith Bailey, Government Business Manager for HCA,

“A one week field evaluation in Dubbo by NSW RMS Management, inspectors, OH&S, operators and technical staff confirmed the John Deere graders excellent performance capabilities, superior safety features, service accessibility and best in class operator station.”

These features played a key role in RMS’ decision to choose the John Deere 770GP. Also of importance was the graders electrohydraulic fingertip controls combined with a steering wheel and the ‘Plug and Play’ feature for easy adaption of Topcon and Trimble laser systems.

The graders have been painted in the RMS orange and have been equipped with additional customised accessories to suit RMS regional requirements. These include front-mounted dozer blades, a front-mounted winch-activated spare wheel, tyre carriers and heated external mirrors for enhanced visibility in cold weather.

The John Deere 770GP showcases the latest in innovative safety features and service accessibility. The integration of high-intensity halogen lights, ROPS and FOPS structures designed to protect operators ensures the safest grader experience.

Incorporating a Park Start feature, which prevents the engine from being started unless the transmission shift control is in the brake position, the park brake automatically engages whenever the engine stops. In addition, the Park Brake is easily engaged simply by moving the transmission shift control to the park brake position.

Unsurpassed service accessibility provides minimised maintenance and low daily operating costs.

Key features include a unique easy-access hydraulic, transmission and differential filter bank, as well as

ground-level fuelling and fast-fill option for enhanced productivity.

John Deere’s exclusive cooling package features swing-out coolers and a hinged rear fan, providing wide-open access for simplified cleaning. The easy-to-navigate LCD monitor provides diagnostic information and offers troubleshooting solutions to decrease downtime.

An important component of the RMS contract was HCA’s ability to perform high level operator and technical training to RMS staff. This was conducted in Dubbo and Broken Hill by Laurie Wright from John Deere and included both classroom and practical activities.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FIRM Sun City Plumbing, has recently cut its teeth in the demanding conditions of Western Australia’s North West resources sector and is ready to take on opportunities in the emerging Mid West mining industry with the help of Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia.

Founded in 2000 by Managing Director Mick Chester, the business has grown to be one of the largest plumbing providers in the Mid West region. “We have worked hard to develop a complete plumbing solution for our clients, from camp installations to minor earthworks and mine site maintenance,” said Mick. “We are committed to acquiring the best equipment so we can provide the most efficient services possible. We are continuously growing our fleet of vehicles, machinery and equipment to match a growing demand.”

Sun City Plumbing operates fourteen Hitachi excavators ranging from the ZX17U to the ZX330.

Their fleet of construction machinery also includes a ZW180 Hitachi wheel loader and two John Deere skid steer loaders. This machinery in total makes up 80% of their construction machinery fleet and is used across a broad spectrum of work ranging from small plumbing maintenance jobs to large mining construction jobs in the Pilbara and beyond.

As the Mid West’s largest plumbing solutions provider, Sun City Plumbing has worked on projects at Argyle Diamond Mine and various mines through the Pilbara and Mid West on both Rio Tinto and BHP sites.

On the commercial front, the Sun City team has played an integral part in the development of many of the Mid West’s finest new developments. These include the award-winning Geraldton Medical Centre and a host of additions to schools through the Building of the Education Revolution program.

TRAIL BLAZING IN TASMANIADesigning mountain bike tracks with the ZX17U-3

wilderness.

THE HITACHI ZX17U-3 is playing a critical role in the construction and development of mountain bike tracks in Northern Tasmania as part of an initiative between The Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania and the Department of Sport and Recreation.

The funds contributed by both organisations have been allocated to the Launceston Mountain Bike Club for the construction of purpose-built bike tracks through the Kate Reed and Trevallyn Reserves in the Launceston region.

Alliance Dry Hire has rented their new ZX17U-3 machines to the contractors undertaking the excavation work on behalf of the Launceston Mountain Bike Club.

In partnership with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, the contractors are utilising this Hitachi mini to build the tracks within the natural recreational reserves.

According to Tim Dyke, one of the contractors responsible for the track design, “We are really impressed with the multi functionality, counterweight and excellent tail swing clearance of the machine.

The zero swing allows us to work efficiently within a narrow track width without creating too much disturbance to surrounding rocks and trees.”

Due to a number of challenges existing in areas such as a natural recreational reserve, smaller machines such as the ZX17U-3 are ideal. “Just being able to rotate the excavator without hitting the tail is great,” said Tim. “The lifting power and hydraulics are really impressive, particularly when moving very large rocks. It is proving ideal in assisting us in placing large stones to form a bridge across a creek crossing.”

In relation to visibility during machine operation, “The three pillar canopy offers great visibility which is crucial for us when maneuvering the excavator in this restrictive environment,” reported Tim. “The ZX17U-3 is quiet, comfortable and remains incredibly stable in the steep and rocky terrain.”

Much of the work on the bike tracks still requires some physical ‘manpower’. However, operators can achieve four times more track building through the use of one machine compared to the work performed by two men by hand.

TERRA CIVIL RACES AHEAD WITH HITACHIHitachi excavators prove a driving force at Terra Civil

WITH THIRTY YEARS experience, Terra Civil continues to evolve the construction landscape and expand its portfolio of bulk and detailed excavation work, demolition and site preparation, civil works, haulage and plant hire. Starting as a family business, the company has built a strong reputation as an industry specialist. Terra Civil has worked on several government projects, partnering with organisations such as Railcorp, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and local government authorities.

Hitachi excavators have proved a driving force on the Terra Civil team with machines operating on over 75% of projects. The fleet consists of seven excavators, from five tonnes to twenty-one tonnes, and are upgraded every three to four years. “We are really happy with the versatility of the Hitachi fleet and overall performance,” said Emilio Spinozzi, Director of Terra Civil. “The excavators far exceed the duties required with very minimal downtime.”

Positive operator feedback continues to increase confidence at Terra Civil. According to Emilio, “The machines are stable and incredibly comfortable, especially during longer operating hours. Excavators are easy to use and contribute to a higher quality finished product.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) has developed a great relationship with Terra Civil over the past thirty years. During this time, the company has purchased 68 Hitachi excavators and has never considered any other brand.

“Hitachi provides service agreements that are cost-effective and allow us to provide a reliable service to our clients,” said Emilio. HCA looks forward to strengthening its business relationship with Terra Civil as well as continuing to support its machinery and service requirements.

HITACHI CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY AUSTRALIA is proud to introduce the new generation of John Deere forestry swing machines. The revolutionary D Series swing machines incorporate industry-leading technology purpose-built to perform in the harshest of forest environments.

The machines are designed and modified to suit a wide variety of forestry applications, such as road building, log loading, processing and shovel logging. They are generally lighter than harvesters and feller bunchers, however much more rugged than standard excavators.

The new range of swing machines feature enhanced versatility and productivity with powerful swing systems, improved horsepower, and new hydraulic systems. The integration of John Deere PowerTechTM

E and PowerTechTM Plus Tier2-certified engines provide excellent fuel economy with high torque at low rpm.

The revolutionary “smart cooling package” features a cool-on-demand, variable-speed, hydraulically driven cooling fan, which maximises the use of available

horsepower while reducing fuel consumption and noise. An innovative debris management system incorporating external screening, sealed cooler compartment, and optional automatic reversing fan helps eliminate the downtime associated with cooling system maintenance. This system prevents materials and debris from entering the cooling-package area to enhance overall productivity.

Resilient and robust machine design contributes to powerful performance and extreme durability. Newly designed log loaderfronts, purpose-built processor fronts, and heavy-duty excavator fronts allow the machines to operate in the toughest applications. A durable undercarriage features robust structures and heavy-duty track chains to deliver both productivity and durability.

Strategically positioned joystick controls and accessory switches offer operators improved functionality. Worksite visibility has been optimised through improved cab design. Operators also have the option of a rear-entry cab featuring more space, accessibility and storage to ensure maximised comfort.

SPINOZZI RACINGSpinozzi on the Pro Stock Circuit

SPONSORSHIP

HITACHI CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY AUSTRALIA (HCA) has recently become the proud sponsor of the Spinozzi Racing team, which competes nationally on the Pro Stock drag racing circuit.

The team races the Terra Civil Pontiac GTO, which boasts a powerful 400 cubic inch Chevrolet engine and custom-built chassis. Featured events the team compete in include the ANDRA Pro Series and National Championship.

Continued testing and race preparation has seen the team make specific modifications to the drag car, including tuning clutch adjustments and refinement of the chassis. The team’s dedicated approach has reflected positively on their personal best race times, and has fuelled their ambition to achieve the elusive first 6.0 second run in future competitions.

In the recent ANDRA Pro Series and National Championship, Spinozzi Racing qualified fifth fastest overall out of a field of twenty competitors with a 7.079 second run and top speed of 193mph. However, the elimination round saw the team achieve their fastest run in the competition with a 7.048 second run, just short of the 7.030 Sydney Dragway track record and national record of 7.022 seconds.

HCA would like to congratulate the Spinozzi Racing team on their achievements to date and extends its support to Emilio and Adamo Spinozzi in their future motorsport events.

For further information on the team including upcoming race events and achievements, please visit the Spinozzi Racing Facebook Page at facebook.com/spinozziracing.
