    Rating Level (Lr)

Rating Level (Lr) parameter has been developed in an attempt to put a numerical value on a noise to quantify its annoyance in relation to the general population. The Rating Level is defined in the ISO1996-2 standard (see section on Interna-tional Standards). It is basically a measure of the noise exposure corrected for factors known to increase annoyance. It is used to compare measured levels with noise limits that usually vary depending on the use of the property under investigation (see section on Assessment). The basic parameter is the A-weighted equivalent continuous sound pressure level or LAeq. The formula for the Rating Level is (in general terms): Lr = LAeq + KI + KT + KR + KS where: KI is a penalty for impulses, KT is a penalty for tone and information content, KR is a penalty for time of day and KS is a penalty (positive or negative) for certain sources and situations.

A large display, showing all the necessary information, and an optional tachometer allow extremely simple and quick measurements, in accordance with the standards. Local authorities and police inspectors will appreciate the ergonomics of the system, allowing measurements to be performed by one single operator.

TYPES 3650 AND 3652 MATRON3 MATRON3 Types 3650 and 3652 are the third generation of MATRON neighbour noise nuisance recording systems. MATRON3 (Manually Activated Timed Recording Of Noise) is built on years of experience and takes care of your more difficult and time-consuming noise investi-gations. Type 3650 includes at its heart, a standard 2250-C Hand-held Analyzer with Class 1 measurement and sound recording capabilities. The 2250-C can also be used as a powerful sound level meter independently of the MATRON3 system. Type 3652 includes a Class 1 2250-M Hand-held Analyzer, also with sound recording, that is designed exclusively for use in the MATRON3 Light system. The complainant controls a high-quality sound recording of the noise, by the simple activation of a hand-switch. Meanwhile, the Class 1 hand-held analyzer continuously measures and stores noise results for comparison before, during and after the complainant initiated sound recordings. Back in the office, it is easy to identify the source and level of the noise, consequently, this makes it easier to decide on what action to take.

    Systems and Packages

    International standard on Environmental Noise

ISO 1996 Description, measurement and assessment of environmental noise. Part 1: Basic quantities and assessment procedures. Part 2: Determination of environmental noise levels. ISO 1996-1:2003 defines the basic quantities to be used for the description of noise in community environments and describes basic assessment procedures. It also specifies methods to assess envi-ronmental noise and gives guidance on predicting the potential annoyance response of a community to long-term exposure from various types of environmental noises. The sound sources can be sepa-rate or in various combinations. Application of the method to predict annoyance response is limited to areas where people reside and to related long-term land uses. Community response to noise can vary differently among sound sources that are observed to have the same acoustic levels. ISO 1996-1 describes adjustments for sounds that have different character-istics. The term rating level is used to describe physical sound predictions or measurements to which one or more adjustments have been added. On the basis of these rating levels, the long-term com-munity response can be estimated. ISO 1996-1 does not specify limits for environmental noise.

    Building Acoustics

Building acoustics measurements are invaluable when designing or examining noise control constructions in the built environment. Whether in our homes, at work, or at leisure, our lives are constantly affected by an ever increasing number of noise sources; televisions, kitchen appliances, neighbours, traffic, industry - all of it noise pollution. One method of reducing the pollution is to reduce the noise source level. Building acoustics takes another approach and examines insulation and isolation from the source. Brel & Kjr have a complete programme of applications to check conformance to building regulations and pinpoint weak spots in sound insulation.

  • Building Acoustics Software

TYPES 7835, 7836 AND 7837 ODEON ROOM ACOUSTICS MODELLING SOFTWARE ODEON is reliable, easy-to-use modelling software for simulating acoustics of closed rooms, open spaces, buildings and outdoor areas. It is a proven tool for predicting the acoustics of new buildings and for evaluating and recommending improvements in existing ones. The acoustics are calculated based on a room's geometry and surface properties. Graphs, 3D plots and 3D animations make it easy to interpret, explore and present results, and using auralisation you can experience the acoustics of the space as it would be after construction. ODEONs prediction algorithms (image-source method combined with ray tracing) allow reliable predictions in modest calculation times. With this, ODEON is ideal for the prediction of acoustics in concert halls, opera halls, auditoria, foyers, underground stations, airport terminals and industrial workrooms, as well as office environments, smaller lecture rooms, open-air venues, patios and atria. In large rooms and open spaces, PA systems may be necessary to support the acoustics. ODEON provides the tools to simulate such systems. For the prediction of noise levels from large machinery a special ray-tracing algorithm has been developed that allows the modelling of surface and line sources.

TYPE 7841 DIRAC ROOM ACOUSTICS SOFTWARE DIRAC PC software is used for measuring a wide range of room acoustical parameters. Based on the measurement and analysis of impulse responses, DIRAC supports a variety of measurement configurations. For accurate measurements according to the ISO 3382 standard, you can use the internally or externally generated MLS or sweep signals through a loudspeaker sound source. Survey measurements are easily carried out using a small impulsive sound source, such as a blank pistol or even a balloon. Speech measurements can be carried out in compliance with the IEC 6026.16 standard, for male and female voices, through an artificial mouthdirectional loudspeaker sound source or through direct injection into a sound system, taking into account the impact of background noise. DIRAC is a valuable tool not only for field and laboratory acoustics engineers, but also for researchers and educational institutions.

    Room Acoustics

Room Acoustic measurements are used to validate new constructions and to troubleshoot existing ones. Room Acoustic modelling is used for planning new constructions, and for investigating changes to existing ones. Measurement and modelling go hand in hand the Room Acoustic Measurement System DIRAC Type 7841 and the Room Acoustic Modelling suite ODEON Types 7835, 7836 and 7836, are the perfect tools to help control the acoustic design of rooms.
