Flooding subsided but still a lot of debris, mud and stagnant water present around affected communities. Generalised pollution and contamination of water sources. Status 1. HCC Health Emergency Operations Centre HCC Health Services has established an internal structure and team leaders in order to manage this emergency response. This includes 4 domains: o Planning Domain: Harvest Miabule, ,Adrian Simbe o Operations DomainCurative Care: Jennifer Anga, Mavis Kulo, Esther Nevenga o Operations Domain – Public Health: George Titiulu (WASH), Oliver Oli(Health Promotion), George Fafale( VBDCP).

Situation Description: At 11.00 am on April 3, 2014 a tropical low with a central pressure of 1002 hectopascals was re-located near 11.1 degrees latitude south and 158.7 degrees longitude east, approximately 63 nautical miles northwest of Bellona Island and 100 nautical miles south of Guadalcanal Island. Flooding subsided but still a lot of debris, mud and stagnant water present around affected communities. Generalised pollution and contamination of water sources.

Status 1. HCC Health Emergency Operations

Centre HCC Health Services has established

an internal structure and team leaders in order to manage this emergency response. This includes 4 domains:

o Logistics Domain: Moses Karuni, Henrick Tome

HCC is prioritizing re­visiting evacuation centres to provide preventative measures based on survey data to deliver preventative and curative services and implementation of intensified surveillance in its health centres to capture diseases of public health importance.

Human resource team from MHMS has begun to implement the removal of health care workers from evacuation centers to a motel.

6 of the health centers already providing routine services for the public. Mataniko, White River and Pikini clinic remain closed.

Works division assess white river clinic already and to visit Mataniko and Pikinini clinic tomorrow.

2. Health teams 3 Health teams. The main function of

the health teams is to provide health assessments of the evacuees, perform curative and preventative services, and assess the status of possible vulnerable groups within the evacuation centres.

Only 1 doctor has been deployed to HCC and is currently based in Kukum clinic. HCC is requesting the support of 2 additional doctors.

15 additional nurses have been deployed from the Nursing Council. They have been divided amongst both the clinics and mobile teams

1 psychologist and a doctor from MSF will assist HCC HEOC in health counseling at the evacuation sites beginning Saturday April 12, 2014

An an additional 2 local RN has been arranged by Dr Rooney Jagilly to be part of the MSF Team.

3. Surveillance/HIS HCC has agreed to implement

intensified surveillance in all of its health centres based on the observations from the epidemic risk assessment provided by WHO

Training for HCC staff is expected to commence Saturday April 12, 2014

Survey results of 17 of the evacuation sites have been compiled at this stage and shared with relevant stakeholders and donor partners

Training for SOPs for outbreak response is requested

4. Public Health­Vector Born Disease

Control Program As of April 9, 2014 LLIN distribution

has been completed in 20 evacuation centres. This includes a total of 2, 158 nets distributed to the evacuees.

5. Public Health­Health Environment Updates as of Thursday 10 April: The

WASH facilities are improving in the evacuation centres as water tanks are being delivered and refilled. Lack of toilet paper and other hygiene and sanitary items is still an issue in the centres.

26 more water tanks were delivered by the WASH cluster yesterday based on the previous assessments of evacuation centres. This brings to total number of tanks to 40.

Trucks are continuing to refill the tanks in most evacuation centres. Centres with the most need are refilled first.

Trucks have been deployed to clean the toilets at evacuation centres, using cleaning products that are at the centres already. The team will start at King George VI and move west.

Purified drinking water is being consumed faster than it can be delivered and there is a need for 2 more trucks and pumps.

HCC teams have been deployed to collect rubbish at evacuation centres.

Tests of water quality are being conducted to check the quality of water that has been marked as safe for drinking.

The WASH team has received requests for septic tanks to be pumped at the evacuation centre’s.

6. Public Health­Maternal Child health HCC mobile team has integrated with

Reproductive health division from the national ministry of health .

Each of the mobile teams has 1 qualified midwife; they have been providing antenatal care to pregnant women within the evacuation centres, and referring pregnant women to NRH if required

They have been performing de­worming and vitamin A administration activities and have covered 16 evacuation centres

EPI team from the Ministry has conducted a cold­chain assessment of Mbokona, Rove and White River clinic.

7. Public health­Health Promotion Health promotion has divided its

operations into 3 phases. This includes o Provision of health talks to the

evacuation centres o Training of camp leaders to

provide health education to the community, and clinical visits and talks

o Community outreach Health promotion team has been

performing health education sessions at the evacuation centres using their own vehicle. So far 13 sites have been visited. The health promotion team is focusing on delivering messages at night time as the audience available is maximized at this time.

8. Logistics 3 vehicles are currently available for

the 3 mobile teams. 2 of these are for the mobile health teams, 1 is for the dental department. 1 of these vehicles was provided by the Ministry.
