Abstract

A solid-state drive (SSD) (also known as a solid-state disk or electronic disk, though it contains no actual "disk" of any kind or motors to "drive" the disks) is a data storage device using integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently.

SSD technology uses electronic interfaces compatible with traditional block input/output (I/O) hard disk drives, thus permitting simple replacement in common applications.

Also, new I/O interfaces like SATA Express are created to keep up with speed advancements in SSD technology.

SSDs have no moving mechanical components.

Overview of HDD

Magnetic Storage Media. Stores data in Magnetic Disks. Read/Write Head for Storing and Retrieval of data. Spindle and Motor to rotate disk. Actuator arm. Fragile Disk makes it prone to damage.

40% annual increase in capacity of HDDs. But Only 2% annual increase in random I/O performance. Failure in today’s requirement.

Overview of SSD

NAND-based Flash Storage Media. Stores data in Multi-Level Cell(MLC) NAND. Performance and Power consumption enhancement. Unlike HDD, SSD has no moving parts.

HDD vs. SSD Startup-up time (Windows 7): 22 seconds(SSD), 40 seconds(HDD). Data read-write speed: 510-550 MB/second(SSD), 50-150

MB/second(HDD). Noise: Silent(SSD), Noise from moving parts(HDD). Temperature control: No cooling system(SSD), Require if

temperature exceed it limit(HDD). Excel file open speed: 4 seconds(SSD), 14 seconds(HDD).
