Continued Evolution of Synchronous Modeling
Modeling is Mutating
video games
sophisticated hardware
online communities
New Users Prefer Synchronous
• graphic window driven workflows
• lack of history
• recycling geometry
Traditional Users have Invested Systems
• 8 layer deep assemblies
• advanced FOP structures

Concept Demonstration
Try this:
1. Use “Insert Part Copy” to add a Synchronous SM file into a Traditional Sheet
Metal File.
2. Open both files in the same window
3. Edit the Synchronous Sheet Metal Part

Integrated Modeling
There are two modes of modeling in ST4
Synchronous & Ordered
Both modes may be accessed independently in ST4 for creation of elements
In ST4, the user can combine the Traditional (now called "Ordered") and
Synchronous paradigms in an Integrated Design Environment
A Model may be purely Ordered or Synchronous

Siemens PLM SoftwarePage 8

Synchronous elements are created in the SYNCHRONOUS mode
Synchronous elements can be edited in either modeling mode
May be used as parent to Ordered elements

The user can switch between the Ordered mode and the Synchronous mode in
3 ways
RMB click context menu in the graphics window or on PathFinder
Tools tab > Model Group
Can be used to add the missing node to PathFinder if the file is purely
synchronous or purely ordered

The user can switch between the Ordered mode and the Synchronous mode in
3 ways (cont'd)
Clicking the nodename in PathFinder switches the mode
Only if both nodes already exist in the file

Sheet Metal Gage Management
Global Problem
How do you spell it, “Gage” or “Gauge”?
Many standards, little conformity
Not just thickness…
Materials are Unique
Type, thickness, and standard all contribute to the complexity
Uses and Shop Tools add to the confusion
Relief, Bend Radius, and Neutral Factors are all gage elements

Sheet Metal Gage Management
Manage all Gages and Properties in Microsoft Excel
Separate document that can be centrally managed (gagetable.xls)
Excel preferred already
Copy, paste, reorder, and perform calculations
Format allows for growth and universal application
