Solid Advice For Designing Your Own Website
In order for your website to be successful, it must work properly regardless of the browser
that is used. You should therefore make certain that all of your web pages are thoroughly
tested on a variety of browsers. Your content may show up fine in Internet Explorer, but it
may be unreadable or badly displayed in Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Before you set your site
to go live, look at how every page shows up in all the major browsers.
Don't rely on JavaScript too much. While it may offer many different ways to create a more
transparent and responsive website, it can pose difficulties for some visitors. There are many
different web browsers that people use and they are constantly being updated with new
features. Many visitors use outdated versions of various web browsers, which means your
code might not be supported. Keep in mind that not every users keeps JavaScript enabled
while they browse. Both of these things mean that these users are prevented from using your
site.
Never underestimate the value of great meta tags throughout your website. Having some
meta tags that offer quality will be able to help show different search engines what your site
is all about. If you have poorly thought out the meta tags that have no reflection on what your
sites content is, you will not be getting many visitors.
Stay away from using pop-up ads. There is nothing worse than visiting a website and getting
assaulted by tons of pop-up ads. It is not unusual for some people to refuse to stay on a
website, and not return either, if it contains pop-up ads. Stay away from those irritating ads
and your visitors will be pleased. As well, if your web host makes it mandatory that you have
pop-up advertising, look into a new host asap. It's not worth the annoyance level they create.
In order to evaluate your web design skills accurately, it's a good idea to start off with small,
simple websites where your successes and shortcomings will be easy to spot. You need to
begin with perhaps a few basic pages with just enough information so that you can determine
how you feel.
While you want to keep the aesthetics of your site in mind, you also need to make every
effort to keep your file sizes to a minimum. Large files cause your website to load slowly. You
want your loading time to be as quick as possible. Remember that some of your visitors are
going to be using slower Internet connections than others. Test your site to make sure that it
loads up quickly, even when accessed on a dial up connection.
Choose some reference books on design principles in general, and web design in particular.
Stick to books for beginning web designers until you've mastered the basics, so that you
won't miss anything you need to know as you study web design.
Most people are familiar with the Adobe Photoshop program and understand the importance
of mastering it for designing websites. However, the companion program of Dreamweaver
will take your web design to a whole new level, so do not neglect incorporating it into your
portfolio of skills.
