    SOLEXCARBURETTOR"M" TYPE

    iThe M type SOL EX Carburettor is broadly speaking,

    identical with the earlier types . It only dif fers in certainp o i n t s o f d e t a i l w h i c h a r e t h e f r u i t s o f t h e e x p e r i e n c e o f m a n yyears on the subject of carburation.

    One can have some i dea of the complexi ty of the problemt o b e s o l v e d , b y a s i m p l e e n u m e r a t i o n o f t h e q u a l i t i e s d e m a n d e din the m odern Carburettor.

    T h e s e a r e , a s r e g a r d s t h e p a r t w h i c h c o n c e r n s c a r b u r a t i o n :ease of starting, extreme slow running, absence of flat spot,maxim um power, mi nimum consumption, and silence.

    As regards the constructional part : ease of adjustment,absence of mov ing parts, wi th the exce ption of the throttleand float, general sim plici ty, mi nimum number of parts, allof these being thoroughly accessible and rigorously inter-changeable .

    CONCERNING THE CARBURATIONIn order to understand the functioning of the Carburettorit is well to follow the dif ferent phases from the moment of

    s t a r t i n g u n t i l t h e c a r i s p r o c e e d i n g a t i t s n o r m a l s p e e d .

    STARTINGWe have gi ven great attention to this poi nt which is fre-

    quently the cause of considerable trouble.The general use of electrical self-starters has made per-

    fecti on in this respect more necessary in order to save theb a t t e r i e s . In the M type SOL EX the starting i s assured by aspecial slow running jet placed between the float chamber andthe throttle chamber in a positi on i ndicated in Fi g . 1 .

    The inspiration of the engine is then exercised upcn thej e t " g " v i a t h e c a n a l " y " .

    T o e f f e c t a n e a s y s t a r t e v e n w h e n t h e e n g i n e i s q u i t e c o l dit i s only necessary to operate the air strangler with whicht h e c a r b u r e t t o r i s p r o v i d e d . This is described en page 19.

    SLOW RUNNINGWhen the throttle is in the position shown on Fig . 1 , t h e

    e n g i n e i s s o l e l y f e d b y t h e s l o w r u n n i n g j e t " g " .The regulation of the mi nimum speed i s eff ected by the

    adjustment of the screw " Z " whi ch limi ts the closing of thet h r o t t l e . One wi ll therefore notice that the mini mum openingis determined w ith great precision and without the possibilityof variation owi ng to play.

    Another very rigi d screw si mi larly lim its the maximumopening point of the throttle when the accelerator pedal isf u l l y d e p r e s s e d .

    " V " co vered by quite a number of patents . The completemain j et is mounted, as shownin Fig . 2, i n the w aist of thechoke tube w hich i s an inter-changeable m embe r and can bev a r i e d i n s i z e t o s u i t t h e r e q u i r e -ments of the engine.

    The j et is held in place bya cap " A " w hich screws on tot h e l o w e r p a r t o f t h e j e t c a r r i e r" t " . The changing of this jetis therefore very easy and canbe conducted without breakingany petrol joint, wi thout losingany petrol, and without the useo f a s p e c i a l k e y .

    The auxiliary jet havingv e r y l i t t l e e f f e c t a t o p e n t h r o t t l e

    positions can be regulated for slow running without any regardto its eff ect upon the main jet's perform ance, whi ch can beadjusted afterwards.

    AUTOMATISMLet us suppose that the throttle is fully opened . It now

    stands to reason that considerable vari ations i n the enginespeed wi ll be produced by alterations in the load to w hich thee n g i n e i s s u b j e c t e d .

    In the SOL EX the secti on of the air supply is constant,and there is no additional valve provi ded together wi th atten-dant compli cations, w hich make for uncertai n adjustment.

    The m ixture correction in the SOL EX i s obtained by theemployment of a submerged jet, of which the characteristicconsists in that the calibrated orif ice is submerged below then o r m a l p e t r o l l e v e l . Tw o passages of air accurately calibratedand termed " diffuser holes " assure that the central channelof this jet wi ll be denuded of surplus petrol directly the de-pression in the choke tube attains a fi gure eq uivalent to theh e a d o f p e t r o l i n t h e f l o a t c h a m b e r , t h a t i s t o s a y a t t h e l o w e s to r d i n a r y s p e e d s a t w h i c h t h e m o t o r w i l l r u n .

    It is then easy to understand that the output of this jeti s t h e c o m b i n e d r e s u l t o f v a r i a b l e e n g i n e s u c t i o n a n d t h e h e i g h tof the petrol column in the jet.

    T h e d i a m e t e r o f t h e s e h o l e s i s v e r y a c c u r a t e l y c a l i b r a t e d ,so as to produce a perfect correction curve .

    h a v e t h e e f f e c t s i m p l y o f i n c r e a s i n g t h e o u t f l o w o f p e t r o l f r o mthe jet directly wi th the speed of the engine.

    If, on the other hand, the diameter were i n great excess,the output from the jet w ould function only whi le the chargeof pe trol above the same was unexhausted, after whi ch itwould remai n, constant regardless of the engine speed.

    It will be noted that this devi ce contains the smallestpossible number of calibrated dif fuser holes, and we w ouldparticularly impress that these should in no circumstances bereamered.

    CONSUMPTIONO n e c a n e a s i l y c o n c e i v e t h a t i t i s a s i m p l e m a t t e r t o a d j u s t

    a carburettor to giv e the utmost economy f or a giv en enginespeed, but it i s much more diff icult to conceive of one thatwi ll giv e maxi mum eco nomy at all engine speeds.

    I n t h e m a j o r i t y o f C a r b u r e t t o r s h a v i n g m u l t i p l e j e t s t h e r ei s a f l a t s p o t b e t w e e n t h e s l o w r u n n i n g a n d m a i n j e t s , c a u s i n g ,o f c o u r s e , a s t a g g e r d u r i n g t h e a c c e l e r a t i o n o f t h e e n g i n e . Theway in whi ch this is easily overcome is by augmenting the siz eof one or both jets, and thus obtaini ng good results at theexpense of economy.

    I n a c o r r e c t l y a d j u s t e d S O L E X t h e f l a t s p o t i s n o n - e x i s t e n towi ng to the throttle being speci ally designed and thereforeone can regulate the carburettor to the max im um degree ofeconomy w ithout any fear of this trouble i ntruding.

    I t i s i n f a c t t h i s p e r f e c t i o n o f a u t o m a t i s m w h e r e i n l i e s t h eextreme economy of the SOLEX Carburettor.

    EASE OF FITTINGIn order to comply wi th req uirem ents, our Carburettors

    a r e m a d e i n t h e f o l l o w i n g t y p e s :I . The Carburettor with the vertical take-off T ype MV.2 . T h e C a r b u r e t t o r w i t h t h e h o r i z o n t a l t a k e - o f f T y p e , , I H .The type M V is suitable for an engine havi ng an external

    i n d u c t i o n p i p e , t o w h i c h i t c a n b e e a s i l y a t t a c h e d .The controlling lever can be placed at either side of the

    t h r o t t l e , o r , i n t h e c a s e o f t h e h o r i z o n t a l t y p e s , e i t h e r a b o v e o rbelow the butterfly.

    The M H T ype SOL EX i s more particularly suitable formonobloc engines, i t is m ounted directly on to the block, thusdisposing of i nduction pipes and heating appliances, ow ing tot h e f a c t t h a t i t o b t a i n s a l l t h e n e c e s s a r y h e a t b y m e a n s o f d i r e c tc o n d u c t i o n .

    It is advantageous to have this carburettor mounted ont h e s i d e o f t h e e n g i n e o p p o s i t e t o t h e v a l v e s , f o r t h e d i r e c t i o no f t h e i n d u c t i o n p i p e w h i c h p a s s e s b e t w e e n t h e c e n t r e o f c y l i n -d e r s i s f u n c t i o n a l l y f a v o u r a b l e t o c a r b u r a t i o n .

    ACCESSIBILITYAll our eff orts have been concentrated upon the greatest

    p o s s i b l e a c c e s s i b i l i t y o f d e s i g n , s o t h a t a l l p a r t s o f t h e c a r b u -rettor, e ven w hen mounted on the engine,c a n i m m e d i a t e l y b e g o t a t , f o r , i n o u r o p i n i o n ,rapidity of adjustment is one of the most

    e s s e n t i a l f a c t o r s .We do not believ e it pos-

    The principal jet " G " is remove d by unscrewi ng the cap" A " which holds it down . T h e s l o w r u n n i n g j e t " g " i s a l s oremovable by means of a sim ple spanner.

    The needle valve i s placed at the top of the Carburettorf o r r e a s o n s o f a c c e s s i b i l i t y , a n d i t i s t h u s q u i t e a c c e s s i b l e , i n s t e a dof bei ng as in mo st cases inconveni ently placed at thebottom of the float chamber.

    It is these combined conditi ons of easy and rapid assem-blage and perfect functi oning, w hich go to make the modernC a r b u r e t t o r .

    ADJUSTMENT

    i

    The adjustment of the SO LEX consists solely in deter-m i n i n g t h e s i z e o f t h e c h o k e t u b e " K " a n d t h e t w o j e t s " G g " .

    T h e c h o k e t u b e " K " c o n t r o l s t h e p a s s a g e o f t h e a i r r o u n dthe jet " G ", and is selected at the commencem ent in accord-ance wi th the usual data, such as bore, stroke, num ber ofcylinders and speed of the engine.

    The adjustment proper then consists solely in the choic eof the jets " Gg " ( Fig . 3), an operation whi ch is conductedw i t h t h e g r e a t e s t e a s e , o n a c c o u n t o f t h e g r e a t f a c i l i t y o f a c c e s sto the jets, and again ow ing to the f act that the slow runningadjustment has very little action upon the main setting.

    These two j ets " Gg " are very simple members, of smalls i z e a n d i n s i g n i f i c a n t c o s t .

    A . clearly worded instruction booklet i ndicating the pro-bable adjustment for various kinds of motors, and the remediesf o r c a r b u r a t i o n t r o u b l e s , i s i s s u e d a n d c a n b e o b t a i n e d f r e e o fcharge on application .

    For com paratively old and slow speed engines it i s gene-rally practicable to use a carburettor one siz e smaller thani n d i c a t e d i n t h e t a b l e .

    Also, f or lorry engines a carburettor of one or even twosizes smaller than above can frequently be taken.

    For very high speed or super-charged engines a carbu-rettor one or even tw o siz es bigger than the above may ben e c e s s a r y , a c c o r d i n g t o t h e p e a k s p e e d o f t h e e n g i n e .

    HEATINGIn cases where heatingmust be :accomplishedby means of an exhaustmuff and hot air pipewe supply a seriesof muffs in fourdifferent sizes to suitvarious diameters ofexhaust pipes.The attachment tothe carburettor can bemade either by meansof a direct adaptingpiece or a bend ac-cording to the general"lay-out" of the motor.

    PETROL UNIONS AND FILTERThe So lex Carburettor is supplied wi th a speci al filter

    incorporated in the petrol union ( Fi g . 5 ) .The swi velling union is drilled to take a5/16" petrol pipe and we can supply on ~-request a copper tube f or this purpose.

    T h e f i l t e r i s s i t u a t e d o n t h e u p p e r p a r tof the carburettor and is therefore alwaysa c c e s s i b l e , t h e g a u z e b e i n g r e a d i l y d i s m o u n t -a b l e f o r p u r p o s e s o f c l e a n i n g .

    To adapt a fi lter to a carburettora l r e a d y p r o v i d e d w i t h a n o r d i n a r y s w i v e l l i n gunion we supply a type of f ilter describedas " T he indirect filter " which i s mountedwi thout the use of solder as per (Fi g . 6 ) .

    In order to assure an adeq uate fuelsupply it is advisable to giv e a mi nimumi n c l i n a t i o n o f 9 . 0 d e g r e e s t o t h e s u p p l y p i p ebetwe en the tank and the carburettor .
