INCARNATION HAPPENINGS•You may have noticed that the combination of the extreme weather conditions and age have com-bined to cause our front steps to be in a very poor state of repair. At our recent joint meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council, the Finance Council and the staff it was decide to form a Buildings and Grounds Committee to investigate estimates for this project. If you would like to be involved in this project please contact Linda Swett at the Rec-tory.

•Fr Linus has left for Sri Lanka for his month-long annual trip to his home. We pray for his safe travel. We are thankful to all the priests who will be coming her to celebrate Mass with us.

•Our GOF Design Team met for the final time this academic year, to debrief our thoughts about this past year and begin planning for next year. Our thanks to Donna Cargill, Bill Costello, Claire McCarthy, Bill Thompson, Tom Ford, all the volun-teers, as well as all the staff, who make GOF such an important part of our parish life.

ANOINTING OF THE SICKThe Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is gen-erally celebrated once a month at varying Masses. The Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an ill-ness. The Anointing of the Sick, like all sacra-

Our next celebration of this Sacrament will be in July, at a date to be announced.

SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITYMAY 31, 2015Show Us

I guess it is inevitable and maybe even obvious …

… that Holy Week and the Easter season have shown us the very heart of our faith. Moving im-ages, deep, piercing, rewarding.

But you may not have noticed the most important thing of all. These images have also shown us the Holy Trinity. Yes. The stories of this past season have displayed the manner in which people on earth came to understand that there is actually a Trinity within the one God.

Let’s go over the stories. Don’t worry now about the theological puzzle, please. The following is just a summary of what we have been through. Re-member that before these events believers did not know or even dream that there might be a Trinity.

The First Person, God the Father

Passion (Palm) Sunday: A long time ago Moses cried out,

Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of Godspeaking from the midst of fire,as you did, and live?” (First Reading)

This was a direct encounter with the one God, the one they knew but did not know. Now they said, “the Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and … there is no other” (First Reading).

I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

5

Page 7: Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity May 31, 2015€¦ · Most Holy Trinity Sunday May 31, 2015 INCARNATION HAPPENINGS ... the Finance Council and the staff it was decide to form a

The Second Person, God the Christ

Good Friday: We saw that in the passion Jesus heard the same voice of the Father but from the midt of something quite a bit more than fire.It was suffering and death. Jesus begged his Father to release him from hanging on the cross. His whole life had been a testimony to God, whom he addressed with the endearing term, “Abba” (Daddy). And now he pleaded “with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence” (He-brews 5:7, italics mine).

He was heard? Yes. He was saved from the sting of death by plunging directly into it. Jesus was, at root of his being, love. This could not be killed.

Easter: In fact, Jesus as love was so fully equal to what God is that, alive, he rose right out of the grave. The eleven were terribly confused by this. We are shown them in this Sunday’s Gospel. Truth is, they still doubted even as they fell down to wor-ship him.

The Third Person, God the Spirit

Ascension: As we saw last week, The Ascension looked very much like he was leaving this world for good. He was not going to stay with us.   Or was he?

He told them an especially important thing: the way in which he was going to continue on earth—by abiding in their souls. They would become the flesh and blood of Christ on earth. His work would be theirs.

Pentecost. And here was the reason: his Spirit would dwell within them, pitching its tent in their hearts and souls, coming closer to them than they could be to themselves. The Holy Spirit, at one with God and Christ, would breathe within them,

making them children of God, his bodily presence in this world (Second Reading).

And that is the story. The fledgling Church discov-ered the Trinity not by studying theology books but by experiencing it. Aren’t you glad you have done this too?

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

Being A Person

We believe in one God: Father, Son and Spirit.

There is absolute individuality within the Trinity,

. . I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

6

Page 8: Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity May 31, 2015€¦ · Most Holy Trinity Sunday May 31, 2015 INCARNATION HAPPENINGS ... the Finance Council and the staff it was decide to form a

for we believe that the Father is neither the Son nor the Spirit, nor is the Son the Father or the Spirit, nor is the Spirit the Father or the Son. Each person is distinct from the other two; none loses his per-sonhood within the Trinity.

There is absolute equality within the Trinity. No person has something that the others lack, for each is God and each is all being. None is more God; all are absolutely equal.

There is absolute unity within the Trinity. God is one; the three persons are one. Father, Son and Spirit are three distinct persons, but they are per-sons in one God.

Ours is a Trinitarian religion. The Trinity is the source of our faith as well as the goal of our lives. We long to live for all eternity the life of the Trinity. Meanwhile, the Trinity is for us the model towards which we strive as a community: free individuals with total equality in complete unity.

Christians look forward in hope to a true com-munion among all persons with each other and with God. The Spirit of Christ labors in history to build up the bonds of solidarity among all persons until that day on which their union is brought to perfection in the Kingdom of God. Indeed Christian theological reflection on the very reality of God as a trinitarian unity of per-sons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—shows that being a person means being united to other persons in mutual love.

JOINING THE PARISHNo matter what your journey has been, we want to be your companions for the next steps, to share the Gospel together and to help each other along the way. Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! Please introduce your-self to a staff member, drop in for coffee on Sunday, or stop by the rectory to register as a parishioner here. ADULT INITIATION, RCIA

We are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full commun-ion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Linda Swett.

BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the par-ents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Linda Swett is the staff contact person for preparation.

GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. We all meet to-gether several times a year for “Faith Festivals,” and many opportunities for adult learning and enrichment are offered in the bulletin and programs. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

MARRIAGEThe engaged couple must contact the Rectory at least six months in advance, preferably a year ahead. One must be a parishioner, or have permission by his or her own pastor to celebrate the marriage with us.

CARE OF THE SICK To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion for the home-bound, or Viaticum for the Dying, please contact the parish office. We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home vis-its during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!
