From the Desk of Father John...

The Feast of the Holy Family Due to the way that the calendar falls this year, we will not be celebrating the feast of the Holy Family in 2017. This does not mean, however, our family is not called to grow in holiness this year, though! St. Ignatius of Loyola states that love is expressed through a mutual exchange of gifts. Gifts have a power to make real the love we have for another and to woo that person to a greater place of love as well. This does not mean that we need everyday to be like Christmas, however. The gift that we give to other people does not have to be wrapped with a bow on it. It may be a note of appreciation, helping or taking on a task when the other is feeling stressed, an expression of affection, and so on help to make our love known to the other in a real and tangible way. How do I desire love to be expressed to me? How can I express my love for another? The Feast of Mary, Mother of God The feast we do celebrate this year today is the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. This feast has two main points to recall. The first point is that we recall and honor Mary for her role in God’s plan of salvation. She was not only the mother of the human Jesus, but mother of His divine nature as well. Jesus was conceived in her womb in the perfect hypostatic union of being fully human and fully divine. Mary was prepared for

such a role, as we celebrated last month, through her Immaculate Conception, which preserved her from sin. Thus, in her womb, Jesus, fully human and fully divine could grow and mature for His first nine months on earth. The second point is that we ask Mary to intercede for us that we may have a blessed and peaceful new year. This is especially poignant this year as we commemorate 100 years since the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. May we realize, through her message of prayerful repentance, the true peace we desire in our new year. Holy Rosary School We are so proud of our grade school. We have 126 students currently enrolled with 18 of these being in our new preschool program. In the next weeks, we are offering some opportunities for you to help support this apostolate of our parish: One way is by asking if your company has a matching gift program for parochial schools. If you read our bulletin a few weeks ago you would have noted that the school has received in excess of $2,500 from such programs from different employers where parishioners are employed. Such programs just take a bit of time to get signed up for, but pays great dividends for our school.

Another is by donating an item toward or buying tickets to attend our annual dinner auction on January 28. This is a great evening to support our school community and to have some fun as well. Lastly, our school’s open house is coming up soon. So many of our new parents come here because they have been invited by a parishioner to consider sending their child to our school. Your words and encouragement are truly needed and appreciated to help our school continue to grow and bring Christ’s message to the next generation. Who Do You Say That I Am? I encourage everyone to join our seminarian, George Staley, as he presents his lessons on the person of Jesus. I will certainly be there as much as I can and hope you will as well. Please see his announcement in these pages for more information. Upcoming Spiritual Activities January is a big month for spiritual events. We will be promoting and supporting the new pregnancy resource center in Warren County in the coming weeks. Also, we will be remembering the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and praying for an end to abortion in our nation. Father John’s column is continued on Page 4.

Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God “And Mary kept all these things, reflect-ing on them in her heart.” Luke 2:19

Mary is the perfect role model for liv-ing a stewardship lifestyle. She listened to God and said “yes” to His invitation to be the Holy Mother of His son. She also trusted in the God’s providence on a daily basis. As we start a new year, take time every day to listen to how God is calling you; trust that He has a better plan for you than you could ever imagine.

Father John’s column continued from page 3

Also, it is a month where we pray for the unity of all Christians. There is a prayer service at St. Justin the Martyr parish in St. Louis County to pray for this intention on January 22 from 7-9:00pm. For more information on this, please visit the Archdiocese website.

In Gratitude Thank you for your many extended kindnesses this Christmas Season. All of the cards, words of appreciation and Christmas greetings, and gifts truly appreciated and humble me at the same time. May God reward you!

Upcoming Events January 7-8 Feast of the Epiphany (chalk Sunday!) Take down Christmas decorations followed by a pizza party. Baby Bottle Campaign begins. January 21-22 Baby Bottle Campaign ends January 28 Holy Rosary Dinner Auction.

P.S. We definitely want to welcome all of our college students still at home, our service men and women visiting home from defending our country, and all those visiting. We especially want to thank those who are making the effort this year to get back into the habit of returning to Church. May God bless your efforts and let us know how we can help as well.

PSR classes resume Sunday, January 8, 2017.

The Blessing we Receive The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God's loving kindness, the shining glory of God's face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God's own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God's face is shown to us and God's presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness.
