Treasures from Our Tradition Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global political upheaval and the de-Christianizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the 1,600th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope explained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church sometimes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a time when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituali-ty. Originally on the last Sunday of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year.

Fresh from baptism’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our identity. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service. —James Field, Copyright © J. LITURGY 5

Living the Word this Week “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23; 35-43)

Today we end our year-long, Sunday-by-Sunday hearing of Luke’s Gospel. Luke has called us to examine our lives to determine whether or not we are living as true disciples. We’ve heard about the brevity of life, about the need for discipline and humility, and also for hospitality and enterprise. Almost all of our values have been called into question. Wealth and power can ruin our chances for entering the kingdom. So can indecisiveness. Also at the forefront of Luke’s Gospel are the need for prayer and power of the Spirit. This is a Gospel that begins with shepherds receiving the good news directly from heaven. It ends with a thief being welcomed by Jesus into paradise. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Adult: From whom do I need to seek forgiveness and whom do I need to forgive? Can I look at this as part of the road to salvation?

Youth/Teen: What qualities would a good leader have? Which of these are you trying to develop?

Today’s Readings: 2 Samuel 5: 1–3; Psalm 122: 1–2, 3–4, 4–5; Colossians 1: 12–20; Luke 23: 35–43 What kind of King is Jesus? How do you envision him? Remembering that they were promised a king from the line of David, the Israelites hoped for a Messiah who would set their political problems aright and bring about a worldly kingdom of Judaic power. Even Psalm 122 seems to describe this type of ruler. Luke’s Gospel today shreds that image after the whip of the Roman soldiers tore at Jesus’ flesh. Still, the Romans flaunted the traditional notion with their ironic inscription above King Jesus’ crown of thorns. Soldiers and ordinary people jeered the royal title at him. Yet the throne of Jesus was the cross of Christ, from which he dispensed kingly mercy and justice toward the humble criminal who shared his execution. Writing to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes the truth about Jesus and his kingship, using words like fullness, peace, and forgiveness. So let us go rejoicing!

Who is the King of Glory? Ancient Israel understood God to be the only “King” that they needed. As time went on, human envy and insecurity crept in, and they wanted a king like their neighbors, an earthly king who would lead them to greatness. God’s people came to depend upon and find their strength in frail humanity rather than their faithful Creator. When that failed, they hoped for a human Messiah King to give them back that fragile sense of security. We can understand, perhaps, their confusion upon encountering the powerfully gentle and gloriously humble Jesus.

The King of Hearts Are you aware that today’s joyous feast is not even one hundred years old? In his 1925 encyclical Quam Primas, Pius XI established the feast of Christ the King. Remember what the world was like in those days—the rise of nationalism and secularism in Europe and un-Godly false prophets, leading inexorably to the Passion of the Holocaust and wide-ranging martyrdoms. No wonder the pope was anxious to show the world a true King! Saint Luke today goes straight to the heart of kingship, of a king’s devotion to his beloved people. In this topsy-turvy kingdom, we see not a king decked in power and glory, but the crucified “King of the Jews” who robes himself in the suffering of a sad and lonely world. His forgiveness and heart-breaking love throughout his passion is a hard act for humans to follow, and yet Jesus gives us his life and death as a model. And then he tells us that, along with the “good criminal,” we will be with him “in Paradise.” What more could we ever ask?

It is fitting that Pius’ encyclical ties this royal feast to the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This King who gave his heart to humanity in the sacrificial love feast of Good Friday gives his heart every day to a broken world still trying to figure out who he is. Copyright © J. S.
