Newcomers (LCAP Goal 6)

Assisting newcomers in our general education classrooms can sometimes be challenging. Research shows newcomer students benefit greatly when exposed to core content even if they struggle to understand the language. If you have newcomer students in your classroom the link below may be a useful tool. Amendment IEP

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Review of IEP

An amendment IEP is called between

annual IEP meetings if an IEP team

member feels that a change of the

current program of the student needs

should be discussed. Items such as:

accommodations; and time in the

general education setting are examples.

At least annually, the student with

special education services shall have

their IEP reviewed. The first annual

review is held within one year of the

date of the initial meeting. The second

annual review to be held within one

year of the first annual review. etc.

Pictured Sandy Fuerte, is a Special

Education Teacher at Rose Ferrero

Elementary School. Sandy assists our

students with special needs that are in

the general education setting. Sandy is

in her first year with Soledad and has

several years under he belt in education

as a teacher and administrator. We are

happy she is with us, thank you for all

you do Sandy!

The Fiscal Report Compensation Data Shows Salaries

Improve, District Contributions to Benefits Continue to Rise

As one would expect in a year like 2015-16 with increased funding for education, statewide

teacher salaries have improved compared to the previous year 2014-15. The statewide increase in

salaries is generally uniform across the salary schedule for elementary school districts. For the

statewide averages of both unified and high school districts, we see slightly greater increases

wanting to better compete for new teacher talent, and also to retain the teachers that they have already, because of the statewide shortage.

The statewide averages were calculated from detailed information provided by school districts across the state. The increases from 2014-15 to 2015-16 were funded from all school funding sources including the Local Control Funding

Formula base funding, as well as supplemental and concentration grant funding. Salary increases funded from supplemental and

concentration grant funding are typically in exchange for increased services to benefit the

students generating the funds-additional instructional minutes or increased collaboration time, for example. Further, these averages do not include any negotiated "off the schedule" salary increases, which are one-time increases that are

not used to increase the ongoing salary schedule. For more detailed information on the calculation

Unlocking the Future Today

Professional Development 2017

Last week, we continued district professional development opportunities. Fifteen learning directors, family student support coordinators, MSMS and SHS counselors, and principals engaged in cognitive coaching protocols designed via reflective conversations to enhance effectiveness working with teachers and students. Facilitated by John Matich, Core Innovate consultant, Cognitive Coaching Day 1 engaged us in the following outcomes: •Understanding the essence of Cognitive CoachingSM •Increased consciousness and craftsmanship in applying interpersonal communication skills to develop trust and rapport •Understanding of the power of a structured professional conversation •Understanding Cognitive CoachingSM as one of four support functions

Second, during the Thursday PD seminar, teachers with emergency-status began their second semester engaged in learning, analyzing, and writing text-dependent questions (TDQs) according to Fisher-Frey’s four levels: literal, structural, inferential, inspirational. We continued this discussion introduced by Nancy Frey during the January district PD and continued last week by Connie Hamilton, our Fisher-Frey consultant.

LCAP #5 – High Quality Staff: SUSD will attract, recruit, support, and retain a highly effective and diverse workforce.

Technology

Tech Committee Highlight

Our Tech Committee teachers are paving the way with how technology is used in the classroom for instruction, and are sharing their knowledge with their

colleagues. We will begin to feature what they are doing in the classroom to give all our teachers ideas of how they use technology in the classroom. First up is

Mr. Rangel over at Gabilan Elementary. Mr. Rangel's students use their classroom iPads every day for about half a day. During our visit, they were

collectively grading their own work which was practicing

quotation formatting on Nearpod. The students were to draw people interacting, while narrating what

they are saying with a few sentences on a Nearpod slide. Their work was then projected

onto the screen and they graded each others work. What a great

way to use technology for collaborative learning! Students said they love using the iPads to

learn. LCAP Goal 2.

Internet Issues

This week we experienced an unplanned internet outage due to an error on AT&T. Fortunately it only lasted about 1.5 hours in the morning, and about 20 minutes in

the afternoon on Tuesday. We are actively working to ensure this does not happen

again. The good news is any internet outage does not affect our ability to print,

use our Computers/devices, and our Secretaries are still able to access Aeries.

Chromebook Grant

Teachers, are you interested in having a class set of Chromebooks to give your

students experience with using different technology? EdTechTeam is offering a

Grant for just that...you can apply here:

Deadline is March 31, 2017

MAINTENANCE, OPERATIONS, TRANSPORTATION, & FACILITIES

TRANSPORTATION

Rain and Wind

The combination of rain and wind can be a challenge on the roadway. Add

in the dark of night, less then optimum tread on your vehicles tires, dangerous! Leave a little earlier and

allow time to arrive safely! Our District Drivers are out checking buses at 6:00 AM, in the dark, wind,

rain, and frost. Making sure our school buses meet the safety

requirements necessary to transport our students safely. Our drivers are

prepared for whatever conditions they may encounter on the roadways.

Soledad High School Solar Project

The project took off and completion is expected in late February, depending on the weather. After it is completed

two student stations will be built somewhere inside the campus at key

locations for students to use as a learning center.

Main Street Construction Update

Staff will be working on a time table for this project to present to the board at the next meeting. Dilbeck and Sons are busy during this rainy period on making sure that steel, blocks and

manufacturing of required construction elements are progressing.

FMOT Department Update Maintenance:

•We were pleased to assist the High School FFA program in erecting a shade system for the hog area.

•Window blinds for the Middle school classrooms affected by glare and other

campus’ are being measured for installation. Schedules will be provided soon.

•We had some minor roof leaks at a few of our facilities due the intense storms and have addressed for repairs once the weather clears.

Transportation: •We are sending 4 new drivers in training to a class at MCOE next week.

•The SPED take back from MCOE is moving forward with the purchase of vehicles expected to be presented at the March Board meeting for approval.

Operations:

•We now have 5 excellent subs for custodial and grounds support when needed. I will be encouraging these subs to gain food service training.

General:

•Overtime authorization has been refocused by the Director and now all time sheets are held at the FMOT office to ensure accuracy.
