The Envelope

The envelope is composed of thousands of simple, repeating elements. These “tiles” act in a way similar to weather vanes – they are free to rotate on their axis, and “aim” at the direction of the wind. We take advantage of two properties of the wind: that its direction and force are constantly changing, and that there are some differences in its direction even on local scales (especially at a tower of such proportions).

Thanks to that, the tiles are always moving, reflect the light differently and cast shadows on each other differently. The changes in the weather and the changing locations of the sun in the sky during the day and with the seasons add as well to the changing look of the tower.

At night...

In the dark, rather than disappearing, the tower is born into new life. Phosphoroscentic (“glow-in-the-dark”) materials slowly re-emit light radiation after exposure to light (they may emit light up to twelve hours at dark), without using external power source. These will be applied as a coating to the tiles of the envelope, making the dance of shadows continue at night as a dance of soft lights.
